Piano teacher doesn't want to give face to face lessons

My daughter is studying for grade 8 piano. During covid most musical instrument students obviously went online rather than face to face. Now after mass immunisation things are returning more to normal. However, my daughter's piano teacher wants to continue on-line for the foreseeable future due to her concern about the risk of catching covid. I respect this decision and both me and my daughter like her. However, I can't help thinking that indefinite remote teaching of such a practical skill such as advanced grade piano is not desirable. Do I need to get a new piano teacher? What do the rest of you parents with musical children think. Can piano be effectively taught remotely long-term?

I think find a new teacher. Online lessons really are not good enough. Playing at grade 8 means your daughter needs more active "hands on" input from her teacher than a beginner would, and so much can be missed when teaching remotely.

It wouldn't hurt to have a trial lesson with another teacher. To be honest, I can't really see how a physical skill needing such a high level of technique and dexterity could be taught remotely. Although I'm not a piano teacher, of course.

Nope, find a teacher who will teach in person. Online is a poor substitute for such a hands-on activity.

CrotchetyQuaver · 03/07/2022 17:17

Absolutely ridiculous, time to look for another teacher!

Find another teacher! Online is no substitute for the real thing.

The sound quality of remote learning will never be good enough for music lessons. Plenty more piano teachers in the sea

I've played piano all my life, done my letters, and I've dabbled in teaching. I've actually had remote lessons myself long before covid as I wanted a particular teacher and distance was an issue. I personally found it fine.

But obviously it doesn't suit everyone. If you're not happy, I'd just see if you can find an alternative teacher locally and when you find one you like, you can just make the switch. I'm sure you won't be the only one who's unhappy with the remote lessons.

Is it the same price for remote? If so I’d definitely look at a different teacher. Why would you pay the same for a teacher who isn’t even in person? The service will be different and likely poorer. I’d let her know in a polite way that you want a more hands on instructor so will be moving to another teacher who can meet your child in person to instruct them.

Thanks for all the responses so far. It’s so helpful to be able to sense-check with you guys, not having has formal music lessons myself.

No, get another teacher.
Unless you have a professional recording studio and even then sound engineers have to edit loads of stuff how can she hear the playing well enough to comment anyway

glamourousindierockandroll · 03/07/2022 17:36

I wouldn't be happy with this at all: I'm so over Covid. Find someone else.

Yup. Same price.

I'm surprised she is still offering remote lessons over 2 years into covid. I think for grade 8 DD needs proper lessons now.

Comefromaway · 06/07/2022 09:53

I agree, get another teacher.
