Wedding Reception Playlist

I've been put in charge of a wedding reception playlist and I need some inspiration!

I've got a lot of the classics but was wondering what songs do you enjoy that get you up on the dance floor at a wedding?

All suggestions welcome!

Why not ask the guests.Have the invitations already gone out?We got a request slip in one of of our invites once and had to send it back with the rsvp. You end up with a good mix of different music and everyone's happy.

That is a very good idea! Unfortunately the wedding is in May so invites have long been sent.

It's not my wedding - I'm just looking for some tunes that people like and get them up dancing!

Twist and shout
cotton eye joe
uptown funk
any abba
ymca
mr brightside
all the single ladies
Happy
Crazy little thing called love.
walking on sunshine
And you've got to have Come on Eileen and Walk 500 miles.

depends how cheesy you want to be...I love a proper cheesy disco at a wedding. Very disappointing at the last one as they played club music all night...

That depends on the couple and the guests surely? Oldies will be good for the older generation but if we played some of the recommended songs here my friends and family would be covering their ears and demanded decent music. This seems a very strange choice of job for someone other than the bide or groom.

What sort of music do the bride and groom, and their friendship group, like? If you're looking for a cheesy wedding disco then by all means go with the above, but at most of the weddings I've been to in recent years, the likes of Cotton Eye Joe, Abba and Steps would clear the room...

Speak to the bride and groom about particular songs they used to dance to in their youth, with their friends. We had a lot of classic wedding reception fare at ours, but the most popular song by far was Common People by Pulp - we're that generation, and my old school mates were immediately up on their feet.

Some other not-quite-as-wedding-disco-ey tunes that went down well:

Money for Nothing (Dire Straits)
Sledgehammer (Peter Gabriel)
The Safety Dance (Men Without Hats)
A Little Respect (Erasure)
This Charming Man (The Smiths)

Also speak to the bride and groom about what they don't want. And get some in-jokes in there - songs that remind them of particular moments, embarassing things they've done, etc. If you just play the same stuff that gets played at every wedding disco, no one will remember it.
