SIng in a choir? - come and say what you're singing at the moment

I thought it might be nice for those of us who sing in choirs to have a thread talking about what we are working on at the moment. Perhaps also mention what we like/find hard about the music and see if anyone else has suggestions for getting round the tricky corners.

I have choir practice on Tuesdays and we are working on Monteverdi Vespers at the moment. I love it but find the way the time signature chops and changes quite difficult - and don't get me started on the fact that the edition we are using sometimes writes the alto part at pitch and sometimes writes it an octave up and expects me to transpose it down.

Anyone else?

Monteverdi is brilliant. You are lucky to have found a choir that sings early music.

We are working on Haydn's Missa Brevis St Joannis de Deo and Rheinberger's Requiem in D.

Brahms German requiem ( in German)
Finzi lo the first final sacrifice.

Odd combination but great music.

Still buzzing from our concert of Will Todd mass in blue and passion music ( passion music v good , don’t much like the mass but it is electrifying to get the band and soloist in )

My choir is doing the Brahms German Requiem next February, @Helenluvsrob. It's not a piece I know at all, so I'll have to start listening to it!

We are currently doing Haydn's Nelson Mass and Purcell's Jubilate Deo. I love the Nelson Mass and have sung it before, though as a soprano and I now sing alto - I really struggled not to revert to the soprano part at first! I wasn't keen on the Purcell at first, but it's growing on me. Our concert is at the beginning of May.

Just done a choral evensong that included the John Reading responses. New to me and really good. Recommend them to anyone.

We are doing Anything for love by meatloaf. Just finished Pompeii by bastille. And just about to start like a prayer by Madonna

@teaandtoastwithmarmite - ditto. You must be in Rock Choir!

I'm in a show choir and we are rehearsing for a performance. Repertoire includes songs from Les mis, hairspray, frozen, newsies, west side story, greatest showman...

My favourite has to be you can't stop the beat but it requires seriously big lungs 😂

We have a concert in a couple of weeks. Some of the Rachmaninov Vespers, some fairly standard short sacred choral works and a great new piece called Unconditional Love by Howard Goodall which was inspired by the Covid pandemic.

He came to our last rehearsal and it was fascinating hearing talk about it.

@pandora206 yes I am Grin

bravotango · 10/06/2022 20:57

We are doing some Verdi choruses - energetic!

Sounds as if everyone is having a great time at choir. I've had to give this term a miss due to working in a COVID clinic which means missing a rather good Baltic inspired programme but looking forward to getting back to it in September. Am very jealous of my DD who has a whole week singing in Winchester Cathedral over the summer holidays.
