Is it too late?!?

I'm 31, I've always wanted to be able to play guitar. I love music but I don't think I have a very good ear or understanding of music composition (e.g I've not previously been able to tune a guitar as I can't differentiate between what it sounds like and what it should sound like and I'm not always able to identify the various components of a piece of music). I'm quite academic, whereas my brother (deceased) was amazing with music and could just pick up any instrument and make it sound good. I always wished I was able to do that. Is it too late to learn??

It's never too late, honestly!
Just go for it.

Thanks @eroica 😊 I suppose I always think that if you don't start young you'll never be able to truly master something. And of course it's harder if you don't have a natural aptitude for it

Absolutely never too late. I started guitar this year aged 57. (Although I did play other instruments as a child and young adult.) Go for it!

Of course not. And guitar is an accessible instrument to learn - so even if you don’t have huge aptitude you will be able to.

Thanks all 😊 I already own an acoustic guitar (though it needs a new bottom string!) and tried to learn about 11 years ago, but didn't try much really - had a few 'lessons' with a friend and that's was pretty much it. Today I downloaded a tuning app and another guitar app with instructions for a load of songs. My brother taught me how to play pixies 'where is my mind' many many years ago so I gave that a go today and managed to relearn what I'd long forgotten! So that was nice 😊

Definitely not too late. Years left ahead of you! And to be honest you have something that not all instrument-learners have ... A true desire and interest in music/ learning. Most who learn from childhood are propelled by music-loving parents.
As for the 'i don't have any natural ability' thing.... sure, some people just are more musical than others. But importantly, successful learning of instruments mostly just requires graft and doggedness. Obsessional tendencies and sheer tenaciousness unite most of my 'musical' friends.
The things you consider to be mysterious skills like hearing bum notes and tuning strings....this is where a skilled teacher comes in. They will save you hours and hours of pointless graft. There is a specific technique you can learn to work out when strings are out of tune, for example...
Go for it. You have potentially the best hobby ever, hours of fun, and if you don't enjoy it you've lost nothing much, really.
