Singing lessons?

First posted this on extracurriculars, but hoping I might get a response here: DS is 12, and has been given a big part in a school production, mostly off the back of his acting ability - but as it’s a musical, he needs to sing a couple of solos. He’s never had any voice training, and is struggling to get his pitch consistent, plus there a few notes just beyond (below) his range. He’s getting limited help from the teacher. He’s got around 7 weeks to go - is it worth setting up a few singing lessons to work on breathing etc? Or working through some vocal coaching YouTube videos? Not sure how frequently he should be doing this if so, and whether it will make any difference in the time. TIA!

A few singing lessons sound like a good idea - it would probably help and be a confidence boost. If it's pitching notes that he wants to work on, then I'd recommend the Kodaly approach - you want to get to a point where you can really imagine the pitches in your head before you sing them (same for all instruments really). Although I guess 7 weeks isn't loads of time. A good website that has some nice resources is Musical U (www.musical-u.com). It has Kodaly as one of its influences. There's training courses you have to pay for but also a lot of free info and resources including an app to help with practicing pitching notes. Hope he enjoys the show!
