Buying a violin online?

Ds needs a full size violin, he's playing on a 3/4 just now. He gets lessons in school but doesn't really practise very much so I'm not keen on spending a fortune.
It's his birthday on Thursday and he's just asked if maybe he could get a new violin. I so wish I had thought of this earlier, why didn't I?

Anyway, we don't live anywhere near a violin shop. It would be a whole day trip out to one and we don't have a free weekend day for ages.

Has anyone ever bought one online? Amazon are selling a beginner's kit for £70 which has good reviews but I'm not sure. What if it sounds really bad? They do deliver with prime the next day though so I could definitely get it by Thursday.

Why did I leave it so late, why did he ask so late? We could have had it all sorted ages ago. What a pain.

I bought one from a violin shop - but it was one that the music teacher recommended.

You've probably already sorted this given his birthday has passed but I've found Liz at Elida VIolins (based in Huddersfield but operating online) very helpful - gives straightforward advice and may send out instruments out on approval - I've bought a viola from her in the past.
