How to get back to music?

I played clarinet through school 9-18yo, did grade 5, then tailed off. I’ve not played since the dcs were tiny, so maybe 8-10 years. And definitely not played anything at all challenging since 2000ish!

I saw a band today and remembered the feeling of playing in a group, the buzz of creating an awesome sound.

How do I get back to it?
I’m probably hella rusty, my clarinet will need a full MOT and my breathing/stamina/ embrouche (?) will be crap.

But that buzzy feeling is calling to me!

I had a break of about 20 years from playing the piano but started again and found a teacher. It's the best thing ever. Smile

Are there any groups near you?

I haven't played the piano much since my eldest son was born 10 years ago, but every now and then, I get the urge to sit down and learn something I like.

Just start playing and enjoying it!

I understand.

I trained as a singer in my teens / early 20s. Haven’t done any singing for a decade and I really miss it but I’m so out of shape.

Hope you find a way back in!

I was in the same situation this time last year, then I bit the bullet and started piano lessons after 20 years of no music (I got grade 8 flute and grade 2 piano at school). It is wonderful! I'm now about to take grade 5 piano and have joined an orchestra with my flute. I think the trick is to find someone you gel with as a teacher, or a band who are enthusiastic - and just go for it!

I’d suggest finding some like-minded friends and setting up a band/group/whatever. Get yourselves some bookings. There’s nothing as motivating as a deadline!

I started piano again after a break of +30 years. 4 years on, I'm now racing through exquisite Bach Toccatas and Handel Suites. And I'm a student at the Conservatoire for the harpsichord (Baroque-era ancestor of the piano) Smile

Ooh yay, good on you. I love my music, it keeps me sane. I'd suggest finding a local concert band. Then you can get back into playing. I play in local band and orchestras as much as possible, given i'm a full time working single mum! Enjoy. Online there's a website called UK Amateur orchestras or something like that which lists them all so hopefully you should find something in your area.
