Hello
Our 5 year old has taught himself a certain amount on the piano and we aren't able to start lessons yet plus he's still quite young . Does anyone know of anything I can do to help him when I am not musical myself? I wondered if there's anything on You tube even if just good music he can watch to encourage him.

Start him on lessons with a real teacher. 5 isn't that young.

Besides learning to PLAY it is useful for a child to LISTEN to varied types of music. As the BBC Proms are on Radio Three every day, and on TV sometimes (BBC Four) if you study the on-line schedules you may find things you will both enjoy.

You have just missed the John Williams film music concert, but it is probably on 'CatchUp' somewhere. There will also be CBBC and Cbeebies concerts I expect.

The John Thompson range of piano music for children is a good place to start. Also let him experiment and concentrate on the sounds he i making. Is it an acoustic piano or electronic, digital one you have? Digital gives you the option to record music (on the instrument, or via a computer) and young people can learn a lot that way.

This on-line music might interest him:
