How can I develop my singing?

I've always had a good voice but never had singing lessons as a child and never did anything with it except singing in the shower and the odd karaoke session. Since having kids and settling down a bit I've joined a choir - very amateur, social type thing doing mainly pop/musicals but I've done some solos in concerts with them which were well received. Recently I've had a couple of lessons for the first time ever, and volunteered to sing at an event at DS's school, for which I got really great feedback.

I know I have a good voice, and I see people singing at parties and weddings and know I could do the same thing, but I have no idea where to start. How do I go about getting some experience? I have no aspirations to make a career out of it - I'm not professional standard obviously and have a career already. I just want to make singing a bigger part of my life. I love it and don't want to look back in the future and wish I'd done more with it. Any pointers for how to take the next step gratefully received.

Carry on singing with the choir, and ask around if any of them are in other groups, etc. And take it from there!

Ask around for local singing teachers. For instance if you like someone's voice ask who their teacher is and get their contact details to ask to go for a lesson with them.

And most importantly, sing everyday. Your voice is a muscle and it needs training and practise like any other muscle in your body.

Oh- and enjoy it! 😉

Do you have any musical comedy or stage groups locally? Or look for on-line 'meet up' sessions that feature the sorts of music you prefer.

I played drums for forty years - pubs, clubs, pantomime, stage shows, barn dance bands. If you have any similar groups near you, don't be shy to approach them and see if they would like to use a vocalist.
