Anybody know about guitars???

Ds1 has started guitar lessons at school. We have two six-string guitars from my dad and dh's dad. They haven't been played for years.

Do they need some sort of guitar mot? Or just need new strings and retuning?

Also, we need to buy a case to carry the guitar to school in. Where can I buy a decent one? I see children carrying guitars in thick cloth cases, and would much rather a solid one, like I remember dad had.

Thanks for any tips anybody is able to give me.

Is it an acoustic guitar or classical or electric? (Classical guitars are slightly smaller than acoustic). Hard cases are much heavier than soft, so I'd say if they're just carrying it to and from school a soft case/gig bag is fine. If they were touring and it was getting lugged about lots and left in different places, you'd want a hard case /flight case.
Happy to help more if you can find out what type and even make it is so can advise more

?? Not electric, not sure about classical v accoustic Dad has been playing it since I remember Smile it's called the hawk and says made in west Germany on it, so likely dad bought it when he was out in Berlin on national service.

Yes would that have been 60s? I have heard of this guitar, I think a student quality guitar from Germany. Similar ones sometimes have warped necks over time (where there wood has moved slightly) which can affect the tuning. It's hard to advise if this has happened without holding it. Either way you'll need new strings at least, your best is to take it to your local guitar shop if you have one and they can tell you what strings to buy (keep the packets they come in so you know which ones for future) and you can ask them if the 'action' still seems good while you're there (that's how the strings sit on the neck and bridge) hope that makes sense
