Music system for 7 yo

Hi, For my ds' birthday, I'd love to get him his own music system, to let him choose what to listen to himself in his bedroom. However, the only options seem to be CD players or speakers that allow you to dock an iphone. Apparently ipods have been discontinued (this was news to me!) as I was looking for - but couldn't find - a combined ipod docking station & CD Player. My dh says everyone just keeps music on an iphone now but I wouldn't want my ds to have my phone (it's not an iphone either), and a CD player doesn't seem ideal as he might just want individual songs, like when you download one-off tracks onto an ipod.

Am I missing something? How does everyone else enable their children listen to music by themselves? Listening to music was so important to me growing up and I used to spend hours in my room with my tape player (I sound so old!) I'd really like the same for my ds.

We bought DD a Roberts zoombox. Not cheap but provided just what she wanted - Cd player, DAB radio and ability to plug in any sort of MP3 or phone via Usborne socket. She uses it a lot for cd and radio and I expect will plug things into it when old enough to be allowed a phone!

How about a different brand of MP3 player, or a second-hand iPod?

Sony do an MP3 player which is their modern equivalent of a walkman ie an android iPod. We just had this issue for our older DD but opted for a kindle fire as for the same money you also get iPad type functionality ie games, books etc but you may not want the internet functionality which goes with this

Fantastic suggestions, thank you. Chipsandpeas I didn't realise the shuffle, nano and touch are still available. Just looked into them and the shuffle seems affordable. I'll look into those other suggestions too. Thanks everyone!
