last.fm and spotify - how do I use them?

Techno idiot here. Just wondering how to get the most out of last.fm and spotify.

I was hankering after a sort of interactive thing where I could put in a few tracks and then it would play me some suggestions and then I would play a few more myself and I would build up some sort of library. I've tried the radio feature on last.fm but if I put in my featured artist and play, say, Stevie Wonder Radio, it doesn't then give me an opportunity to add other artists that I like to the same station iyswim?

Can I do this? And how do you use these things? (And what do you call them? platforms, channels, stations, apps???)

I think you can join Spotify via their website. Then, it's easy. Just search and play.
Another one that let's you choose free music is Grooveshark. I use that when my limit on Spotify has run out. Can't remember how many minutes you get.
