Buying an accordion

Dh would love one and I'm considering a surprise pressie for his bday next month. he is a musician so picks up new instruments quickly. I'm not sure what bass size to buy or what to look out for as a sign of a decent accordion. Our budget is prob around £300-400 so it'll probably have to be fairly basic? Any advice much appreciated (otherwise I'll just buy a pretty one...)
