Ukulele - what to buy?

So DP wants a ukulele for Christmas.

He is very musical, pretty accomplished piano (grade 8) and guitar player, so no worries about that side of it. But has never played a ukulele before.

Any advice please about what to get? I've read that a beginner should start with a tenor. Is this true?

Don't really want to spend loads of money as it's only a hobby.

TIA.

can get them really cheap.

Thanks. When I say I don't want to spend loads, I also do want it to sound decent. ie doesn't have to be concert standard (if there is such a thing for ukuleles!) but not a crappy tinny one that a child would have.

Vicar would your one pass the test do you think?

actually read the reviews - its a great sounding little uke! a great beginners one, and sounds lovely (to the untrained ear!)

it was recommended by MN to me, and i was really pleased with it - dh loves it!

DH says you also need an electrical tuner....unless you have a very good ear.

tuner is a cherub ukulele mate - also from amazon.

Thank you very much both of you. Smile

dh has just given me a rendition of something by Roy Orbison....

DS2 also plays guitar and bass - went to school music concert yesterday and they have a very comical / fun uke band. Waiting for DS2 to appear - so went back into find him playing the uke of one of his friends - seems quite a simple to play if you can do guitar already (says he who can't play a note). May even get that uke as a cheapo surprise SIL will hate it as she prefers DS playing flute & piano only.
