Don't know what happened but i've recently rediscovered and the whole Levelling the Land album. I was only 10 when it came out, so it was all a bit over my head back then, but I can't believe how relevant and amazing this still sounds Grin

any other fans out there?

OMG!

That really takes me back!!! - but then, I was a bit older than 10 when it was out! Went to see them with a long-haired boyfriend of the time...

Grin

Wow that was a blast from the past Grin

What about

IntergalacticHussy · 27/01/2011 10:26

That's so hippily trippy in that 90's way... i just love their politics. thinking of going to their festival this year Smile

Oh wow I LOVED the Levellers! Levelling the Land was never off my midi Hifi Grin skips off to hoover while singing Fifteen Years very loudly

ChestnutSoup · 27/01/2011 10:30

Devil Went Down To Georgia was my fave.

Still listen to them now...

ChutesTooNarrow · 27/01/2011 10:43

I was OBSESSED with the Levellers at school. One of my strongest college memories is every second person wearing a long sleeved Levellers t-shirt. My mum recently tried to hand me back about 8 of their t-shirts I had abandoned in her loft Blush

I lost interest in them around the time Zeitgeist was released, they are still going strong aren't they?

ChutesTooNarrow · 27/01/2011 10:53

I think was probably my favourite song, I loved 15 years and Belaruse as well.

Just listening to the lyrics and not finding them as cringy as I thought I would. Might have to dig out my tapes!

cestlavie · 27/01/2011 10:59

Oh my god, well found! I remember Levelling the Land very fondly indeed, not to mention A Weapon Called the Word. Ah, sitting in the uni bar, howling away to 15 Years and completely and wilfully taking the wrong message away from it...

"It's another week 'til his cheque comes through,
He's got a fiver left to spend on food,
But the doors of the bar are open, and he breaks another rule
He sits on the stool that bears his name,
His favorite glass is called the same,
And he's never been kept waiting, 'cos he pays the landlord's wage"

Mental note, put back on iPhone tonight!

AlmightyCitrus · 27/01/2011 11:13

Ah, the memories. I used to go and see them quite often, in fact they played at a free outdoor gig a couple of years ago in St Helens and I took the kids down the front!
Much more sedate than when I saw them about 13 years ago and met my very new boyfriend in the pub after, sporting a huge shiner where I'd got elbowed in the face in the mosh pit.

(It's OK readers, he still married me Grin)

halfcaff · 27/01/2011 11:20

Their festival is called Beautiful Days and it's in Devon in August. I think they play quite a few other festivals a year too. Saw them at Glastonbury in the 90's and played them loudly in my kitchen for many sessions of washing up!

pinkhebe · 27/01/2011 11:24

Jon from The Levellers has a son in my son's class Grin

upahill · 27/01/2011 11:37

I love This Garden.
My other song that I can sooooo relate to is

....'You fancy a drink, to clear your head... you see no reason why....'

Ahh the story of my young adult life!!

IntergalacticHussy · 28/01/2011 10:14

oh god, just the one was the first Levellers song i remember being aware of. Tuuuuune!

They are touring with the Wonderstuff in March (digs out battered Doc Martens and stops washing in preparation Grin)

bucksmum · 28/01/2011 10:20

I love the Levellers off to see them at Brixton in March - cannot wait!!

2blessed2bstressed · 28/01/2011 10:20

Oh Pinkhebe - tell me it's not true! Even at 46 years of age, and with kids of my own, I had still held on to the fantasy that Jon and I were going to get together and travel the world in a converted bus...he'd play his fiddle evey night at the campfire

SixtyFootDoll · 28/01/2011 10:26

I used to love the Levellers - takes me back to 'alternative' night at Barons in Swansea and TJs in Newport circa 1990!

scootergirl that will be a good gig, am off to check if they are playing near me!

cestlavie · 28/01/2011 11:21

Inspired by this thread, ran in to work this morning listening to Levelling the Land - god, that really was a fine album

Surely there's something fundamentally wrong about running into work for client meetings whilst listening to tunes like "Boatman", "Liberty Song" and "Sell Out"... ah how times change Wink

belgo · 28/01/2011 11:22

I head it this morning in a supermarket. Great song.

Readyisknitting · 28/01/2011 11:26

oooh must put all my albums on. very loudly! and my docs Smile

ScarlettWalking · 28/01/2011 11:33

love it

munkymaz · 01/02/2011 12:17

They're touring 'Levelling the Land Live' at the moment, got tickets for Leeds )2 - with the Wonderstuff - happy days Grin
.......wnaders off to try and find the old combies......

JanMorrow · 28/03/2011 17:10

I used to play and play and play Levelling the Land, I fancied myself as a right little "crustie" as my brother used to call me.

musicluvvie · 18/05/2011 14:26

I absolutely love that song, beautiful day was great too. Has anybody been to see them at Beautiful Days at all?

crazybaker · 18/05/2011 21:12

They were the first band I ever saw live, about 18 years ago now. I painted their symbol on my DM boots. They've been amazing whenever I've seen them live.
