What can I sing for my choir audition?

I have an audition next week for a chamber choir and I need a (soprano) piece to sing. I was thinking maybe a folk song (Vaughan Williams?), or maybe a solo from a choral work, but not sure what.

Something simple but effective would be ideal! Any suggestions?

I really like Lark in the Clear Air, it's a gorgeous folk song. A bit up and downy, though. Choral works - I Know That My Redeemer Liveth (breathing is horrible) or Come Unto Him from Messiah? Depends how hard/operatic you want it, I suppose...

I love "The Bold Grenadier" also known as The Nightingale Song as the folk song choice or "The Water is Wide".

How about one of the Messiah arias? Or part of one?
Also like "I know that my redeemer......"

I sang a Peter Warlock song for an audition once... think it was called The Sleep Song, or something?

Lark in the clear air is a nice suggestion.
Pie Jesu from Faure's Requiem
Schubert's Ave Maria
Drink to me Only with Thine Eyes
Scarborough Fair
Somewhere - West Side Story

Not solos, but you could sing the sop part:
And I saw a new heaven - Edgar Bainton
My soul there is a country - Parry

I'll have a look at those - thanks. Lucy - agree with you about breathing in I Know That My Redeemer - I'd forgotten about Come Unto Him though, I like that one.

iheart - good suggestions - hadn't though of just singing the sop line of a choral piece. Love the Bainton, not sung that for years.

I wouldn't sing the soprano line of a choral piece - they may well ask you to sight-sing a soprano part during the audition, so you may want to have done something different.

I sang Twiglight People by Herbert Howells, for mine.

Linden Lea, by Vaughn Williams might be a good choice - it has a wide range, allows you to show off good breath control and dynamics, with an interesting change of mood in the final verse.

Sing something you already know would be my advice.
