Anyone else feeling sick waiting to see what the PIP cuts will be?

Wondering if I will still be able to pay for the numerous services and things my disabilities necessitate.
I think, given I have such severe issues, that I may be one of the “lucky” ones as from what I have read so far I would still have enough pip points plus I am older and have stage 4 cancer (separate to my other significant disability) but who knows.
Even if I escape the cull I am sad and scared for others who may lose their award.

What I’m interested to know is will
they apply the new criteria retrospectively to existing claims and stop PIP for those not meeting the new threshold.

As they can’t keep up with current reassessments anyway I wonder where all the extra staff will come from if everybody on Pip needs to be reassessed?

I don’t think the changes will happen until November 2026 - that’s what I’ve read.

I will be 62 by the time my current award ends, if I am still alive by then.
Hopefully I will be left alone in that case but the anxiety about all this upheaval is crippling.
I really rely on my support worker and other paid help.
People assume that if you have stage 4 cancer you automatically get full Pip anyway but that is not true if, like me, you aren’t likely to die quite soon enough.
Unbelievable but true.

I know, it’s just vile isn’t it? I have heard news reports about people being badgered to work one week and dying the next Sad

Fingers crossed for you that it will be ok. Cancer is stressful enough without all this.

ButterOllocks · 18/03/2025 13:38

They will need a HUGE amount of new staff to enable these reforms - I think those able to work - and try work without the possibility of loosing their benefits is a good idea. I really don't think if your disability either physical or mental is severe enough to prevent full time work, they you will have to jump through some hoops - but will be ok. As others have said it's the significant increase in young people - whose lifetime costs on benefits is unsustainable.

Queenanne20 · 18/03/2025 13:38

{mention:Lyannaa}please@Lyplease can you tell me where you saw that these changes won't come into effect until November 2026?

businessflop25 · 18/03/2025 13:38

I’m really worried too. On UC with an award for reduced work ability. Not on PIP. I do work I run my own business but it’s not enough to live on - in fact atm it’s loosing money not making it. Terrified I’m going to not have enough money to pay my bills now.

LadyKenya · 18/03/2025 13:39

I would like to know what they intend to do about the massive backlog of reviews, sitting there, that has to be tackled. And the calibre of some of the assessments being carried out, that are farcical.

FlyingUnicornWings · 18/03/2025 13:40

You will have to score 4 points in at least one of the descriptors to qualify for the daily living component. This will apply to new claimants and for existing claimants at their next review.

My DS has only just had his ESA work capability eview - so hoping we will be back of the list for an assessment.

Queenanne20 · 18/03/2025 13:42

My dhs pip award is currently awaiting review, we sent it back last September. Will this now be assessed under the new rules?

She said: “We will legislate for a change in PIP so people will need to score a minimum of four points in at least one activity to qualify for the daily living element of PIP from November 2026”

I couldn’t find any clarity on that, sorry. I’m sure someone else will come along with the answer.

Lyannaa · 18/03/2025 13:46

Yes, they will have to get it through parliament won’t they first?

The tax credit cuts that David Cameron tried to bring in were voted down by the House of Lords.

Queenanne20 · 18/03/2025 13:46

Thanks so much for the replies. I can't tag you all as this new app is playing up for me and when I try and tag someone it keeps repeating their name, so thanks for the information.

If your business is making a loss then you're probably right to be worried. Does your reduced work ability mean that you're unable to get any job just to tide you over until you decide whether your business is worth rescuing? Difficult times and choices x

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 18/03/2025 13:54

I’ve just dug out my last award letter with my points and I do have 4 points in more than one section so thinking that means my award will stand.

The thing is though that the assessors always downplay the difficulty anybody faces and without any supporting evidence will simply state what they believe you can do, even if you know and have shown you actually can’t.
This means many people who really should score the necessary 4 points are only given 2 or 3 so you could be quite significantly disabled but now not qualify for the daily living part of Pip.
Madness!

Tax the richest, not the poorest.
What is KS thinking??

Yes, I’m awaiting another assessment, and feeling quite sick about that and also impending changes. I have a physical disability but also mental illness, so I’m in the demographic that will be targeted as ‘just lacking a bit of resilience’. Not withstanding I’ve been diagnosed by psychiatrists (not TikTok) in an inpatient setting. I’m tired, my quality of life is shit, and the few good things I have in my life are gradually disappearing as I’m less mobile. I’ll have no problem taking myself out of the equation if/when it comes to it.

Edited - grammar

This is my worry.
Blood on their hands.
I hope you can get some help with your claim. Don’t let the bastards get to you.

The changes do not apply until November 2026. So they should make it clear that it is applications that they receive from then on that would be assessed under this new criteria, as well as existing claims being reviewed from this date onwards, otherwise some people will be worrying from now, who are awaiting a review.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 18/03/2025 13:08

If only that was true!
Pip fraud was 0.01% last year according to the DWP’s own figures so fraud is not an issue.

I'm sorry you're worried. I am too and it's all just been announced. I'm disabled (became disabled about 3 years ago - it can happen to anyone!), work full time from home, and have an autistic daughter in a specialist school. I feel like this is just eugenics and they'll only be happy when we are all dead.

Queenanne20 · 18/03/2025 14:07

I still can't find out where it says it's only from November 2026?

Agreed. They'll do anything but tax the rich.

Try not to panic. Labour have said that the reforms will be in line with their brand of politics. I think from what I have heard, the focus is going to be on 18-24 year olds who are are the group with the biggest rise in PIP claims in the last 5 years and this is thought to be linked to Covid / lockdown effects.

The government is also likely to shut down social media channels who create content which helps people get PIP.

I think there might be a lot of people claiming in this age bracket who don’t need it.

My daughter has autism and ADHD. I was told by my UC work coach that she should claim PIP. I explained that she doesn’t need it, as she manages day to day fine. Her mental health isn’t great as she struggles to make friends, but she certainly doesn’t need extra money to help with that. He said I should claim it anyway, as she is ‘entitled’.

She hasn’t.

I wonder how many other 18-25 year-olds are claiming when they don’t really need it.
