We'd like to find out more about your children's career aspirations and your attitudes towards them continuing their education.

This survey is open to UK Mumsnet users with at least one child aged between 16 (in Year 12 or equivalent) and 22.

Click here to complete the survey.

All who complete the survey will be entered into our monthly prize draw where 3 Mumsnet users will win a £150 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I am a grandmother with a 17 year old GC living with me. Can I still do it although I'm not actually his parent I am his guardian?

greenlynx · 04/11/2021 20:50

Done.

Ruralbliss · 04/11/2021 21:39

All done

Fabvegetablegrower · 04/11/2021 21:41

@ancientgran I've completed the survey myself. I don't think you need to be a parent to answer the survey. Smile

Sidge · 04/11/2021 22:11

Done but it doesn’t make any provision for those of us with young adults who are disabled or with complex needs.

TrevorFountain · 05/11/2021 01:39

I think 'after school' needs clarifying.

Some areas have state schools with sixth forms. Some don't, and it's it all (or predominantly) sixth form colleges.

Thanks, didn't want to do something inappropriate.

TeenMinusTests · 06/11/2021 08:58

it should probably differentiate more clearly between

  • plans to do A levels
v
  • plans vocational course

As sixth from colleges and FE colleges mean different things in different places.

lljkk · 06/11/2021 09:02

That was funny. I would have extremely different answers for the other kids, mind.

TeenMinusTests · 06/11/2021 09:18

I agree, i would have had very different answers for DD1 than I did for DD2

so many questions I could only answer with "I dunno, it's their choice".

I can't decide if that's good or bad😳

I agree.

So many questions about my opinion on their choices.
Very little about THEIR opinion or if we feel THEY had good advice eg form school, or if we have the skills to support THEIR choice.

feels like it was written by a helicopter middle class parent

steppemum · 06/11/2021 22:23

and come on mn

are you

other

Howunusualisthis · 07/11/2021 05:32

16 in year 11?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/11/2021 09:25

@steppemum

thanks for saying that! I felt a bit shitty for answering "I dunno" as if I was some distant, uncaring, uninvolved parent!

The system here is that my kids independently and creatively think for themselves and then inform us of their ideas, choices and plans. (even my 7 yo does this! imagine that, he can think for himself 😱🤣).
They then let us know or ask what we think - so it's at that point we can get involved, but only if necessary.
And even if I was unhappy with some choices once they are 18 what could I do?

Imagine a AIBU when a mum is crying about some choices her kid made. She'd be told to suck it up, to get a grip and that she was indeed BVU.

it was a weird questionnaire, that's for sure

steppemum · 07/11/2021 09:37

The one that really made me laughwas where it asked if we wanted them to go into the same creer as us/were upset they weren't.

I'm a primary school teacher by training.
It is definitely a vocational job. Why woudl I want someone to do that unless they loved working with kids and were good at working with kids.
My 16 year old (who I filled in the form for) is going to be an engineer. Because it suits HER and HER personality and HER gifts.
Nothing to do with me, excpet show interest and make sure she has access to all the information she needs, and give sensible advice (eg I talked to my son about London unis because of the cost and the pros /cons of compus unis etc)

But yes. Their choice.
