We'd like to find out more about your children's career aspirations and your attitudes towards them continuing their education.

This survey is open to UK Mumsnet users with at least one child aged between 16 (in Year 12 or equivalent) and 22.

Click here to complete the survey.

All who complete the survey will be entered into our monthly prize draw where 3 Mumsnet users will win a £150 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

@steppemum

that was a weird one.
I felt like saying "yes, we are all doctors for the Royal Family and if my children pick a different career path they will be denied their inheritance sharpish!"🤣

but I just said "I don't have a career. They can do what they want"

Did it ...but think I messed up !
Is the name at the end your real name or MN nickname ?

Did not seem to have any provision for SEN/disabilities or anything ?
Could have been me reading it wrong .
Agree with others ...3 DC...each one different answers .
But "it " told me to use the youngest..
Ohh well !!

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

done

so many questions I could only answer with "I dunno, it's their choice".

I can't decide if that's good or bad😳

Ditto! I think a lot of parents are waaaay more involved than I was in deciding what their teenagers do though, I'm very hands off because it's up to them. I only say something when I think they're making a mistake that's not easy to reverse.
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/11/2021 12:16

@SultansOfMing

I shudder to think about all the teens with helicopter parents breathing down their necks, demanding or deciding what they should do.

that Monty Python sketch comes to mind where Eric Idle (playing the son) decides he wants to be a coal miner instead of following his middle-class playwriter's dad's path thus making both of his parents outraged and upset.

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba tbf, that’s what my MIL did with DH.

And in some ways she was right. The job he has is one he enjoys well enough and it has given him a life much more comfortable that they had/DH choice.
No one enjoys living in poverty and MIL was set to avoid to see any of her dcs going down that route…

Asking what age they started considering what they wanted to do after school was a tricky one. I remember ds telling me he was going to be an ice-cream van driver when he grew up, when he was about 3. Does that count ?

However, I join all those thinking this seems aimed at parents who are somewhat over involved in their dcs' choices.

I had no idea how to answer most of that as a parent of a university student. There was very little relevance.
