Back in 2012 I was trying to work out whether I should divorce my abusive husband but was frightened of making a decision that was wrong for our two children. My husband and I were playing what I called 'house chess' I would leave a room if he came into it and he would do the same. He hit me and did other things but the children were protected (I thought). Was I going to mess up their lives if I split from him or would things get worse for them as they got older. I posed the question I had struggled with for two years to the parents on mumsnet. The unanimous responses I received helped me make the massive decision to leave him and I've always been grateful for their unwitting help at giving me the courage I needed. Since divorcing my husband he and his new partner started abusing me and my boys when they visited them. The police were involved and my youngest son was also physically assaulted by his father. I've spent 2 years in court trying to make sure the boys and I are safe from them both. In Sept 2018 the family court finally listened to my children and me and since then the boys father has not contacted us even once to see his sons. We are all now recovering. My question...I'm now suffering what I believe is PTSD because of everything that has happened over the last 7 years and need to hear from other parents who may know if I will ever recover. My children are contented and do not want to see their dad. I'm sure as a family we will need to deal with the emotional fallout from this but at the moment they are happy just to be at home, go to school and live free of stress. I desperately need to know how long it will take for me to feel free and safe and able to breathe again without the weight of the past pressing on me. If anyone has experienced long term abuse and has had to also protect their children but has recovered to the point that they recognise they have, please could you tell me how you did it and how long it took? Thank you all again...
