Testers wanted for Burger King

We've been asked by Burger King to find ten mums with children between the ages of 4 and 11 to spend the day at its test kitchen (near Hayes and Harlington, London) to try its new kids? menu and to find out more about developments in this area. Volunteers will need to attend between 11am and 2pm.

You?ll also be able to take part in an informal discussion with David Kisilevsky, vice-president of marketing for Burger King EMEA, and Mark Dowding, Burger King chef and director of new product development and innovation, about the kids? meal and ask any questions you may have.

They want a mix of folks who would pop into Burger King and those who normally wouldn't. All they're asking for is feedback from you on the day. On this occasion, Burger King only want mums to attend, sorry but no children.

Everyone who attends will obviously get travel expenses, but will also receive £50 of Amazon vouchers.

If you'd like to volunteer, please fill in the mini survey.

Thanks,

MNHQ

Hi all

Just back from hols so do be gentle with me .

Thanks for all the feedback on this.

We did discuss at HQ whether we should do this or not, given the reaction to the Mac D's potential online chat. We felt there was difference between us asking for volunteers to go and test BK's menu as part of their market research - offering feedback directly to them - and inviting the head man at Mac D's on for a chat and effectively publishing that feedback on MN.

We don't accept advertising from either company as things stand, but as a few folks have pointed out it can't harm sometimes for these companies to have the benefit of hearing your wide ranging views

Thanks to those who've volunteered already and thanks again for the feedback on this - it's really useful.

Carrie is quite right about our feeling that allowing a company to advertise/sponsor MN is a bit different from allowing them to ask you to be product testers.

But to be clear Burger King is not, as things stand, on our banned list. Had they been we probably would have asked first whether you minded if we allowed them to recruit you to be product testers (IYSWIM) - as we asked about whether you minded having MacDs on for an online chat (we told them no in the end).

So why aren't they on our banned list? It has to be said the distinction we've drawn between BK and Macs is a fairly esoteric one - namely that it's not so much the food they're peddling that's the problem but the way they supply it (ie the fact that they dominate the market and suppliers - the Fast Food Nation critique as it were). See [http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1374&threadid=328730#6654051 this thread for further explanation]

That said I'd don't think we'd allow BK too close - to sponsor MN as such - so I guess there are 3 tiers of advertiser in our minds as we stand:

  1. Those beyond the pale - ie formula milk, Nestle, Macdonalds, plastic surgery types, political parties, porn sites and a few red-top newspapers
  2. Those we'd take money from but not be cosy with (ie have as sponsors/do jt ventures with)
  • namely bad food folks such as BK, fruit shoots, Sunny Delight etc.
  1. The rest - who we're delighted to relieve of some dosh.

Please do let us know if you're happy with this/unmoved/think the whole thing stinks.

Cheers as ever.
