This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tested Eedi Family online maths lessons with their child aged 9 to 14. Eedi Family is an online Maths learning platform that provides interactive maths lessons for children to build confidence in maths, and following a product test last year, Eedi has implemented a lot of testers’ feedback.

If you'd like to take part in this product test, we're still recruiting for testers to take part in the next couple of weeks. You can sign up here.

Here’s what Eedi has to say: “We believe that every child has the potential to thrive in maths with the right support. Eedi Family helps children build maths confidence at home while giving you the peace of mind that your child is making progress in maths in these turbulent times. Eedi will not only motivate your child to practice Topics they need to review, but our learning companion and live expert maths teachers will help your child improve in maths quickly with tailored feedback - so they can spend less time on devices and more time offline.

This is our second time on Mumsnet review - on our first early iteration we tested our beta product and got amazing feedback from Mumsnet testers. We’ve implemented much of that feedback, in particular:

- Children can now search for any topic so they can match what they’re doing in school (you still have recommendations though!)
- Children can now take a Lesson before reviewing Topics if they need a refresher
- We reduced Lesson and video length and encourage shorter but more frequent use
- We increased availability of live teacher support during the Lessons
- Added Achievements and Routines to increase motivation - this is a space we’re actively working and would love to hear your feedback here

We’re excited to engage with the Mumsnet community again and learn from your feedback.

Join us in trying an affordable alternative to private tuition that helps your child try their best and want to keep learning.”

Selected testers received a one month free trial of Eedi Family and were asked to complete at least one virtual lesson and quiz per week.

Testers, please give your feedback by answering the following questions as well as sharing any other thoughts you have and completing the short survey we’ve emailed you. Testers of Eedi Family were invited to start taking part in different weeks. Please wait until we email you before giving your feedback on the thread.

  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?
  2. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
  3. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
  4. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?

All testers who give the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?
After a few sessions my DS enjoyed using it but it was a bit tricky to navigate at first with some technical glitches.
  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
I think DS liked the 'Congratulations' screen best, he kept pressing it to get the celebration streamers Grin
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
We didn't have any 'live' sessions with a tutor, they never seemed to be available when he did his sessions, so the chat was a virtual assistant.
  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?
A maths tool that could help with confidence but is a bit subjective and dependent on available lessons.

I don't think I would recommend Eedi to other families. There were some technical glitches early on, and things like the videos could be enlarged but the screen shots of the videos couldn't, which made it difficult to read.

DS did a quiz at the start to set his level but we weren't given the result of the quiz and some of the lessons were too advanced, using terms or subjects he hadn't used in school. Others he has done and wanted to practice, e.g. percentages, but it said this wasn't available until level 16!

I'm not sure how the curriculum/lessons are decided, and maybe it's a regional thing, but there were a few lessons he had never covered before and others that were too easy. It seems a little inconsistent.

AugustRose · 22/06/2021 12:06

Oh and I think I miss understood the Mystery Box thing, I thought he would get one if he did sessions every week of the trial so he was a bit disappointed not to get one. But that could be my fault if I didn't read the information correctly.

  3. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors? We enjoyed it but I really struggled with having a log in for him and for me and it all got confusing and there were too many emails.
  4. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend? Engaging and interactive

  1. I liked the fun and interactive and safe space for my child to learn.
  2. The best feature was the reports and reminders about whether my child has logged on or not.
  3. We liked the chat based learning, although occasionally my child did get frustrated at having to repeat a lengthy set of questions when he understood the concept.
  4. A fun and interactive way for children to learn and build their confidence in maths.

What did you like most about Eedi Family? Easy to sign up. Good range of topics. The talk to a tutor was good.

  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family? Talk to a tutor
  2. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors? Good but my daughters really struggle with maths so still found some explanations hard to follow.
  3. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend? Online maths learning with online tutor help.

It was ok and my daughter enjoyed it. She is desperate for a mystery box but soon got bored when she got stuck on a question and the explanation was too hard for her to follow to move on. She really struggles with maths so it needs clear, concise, easy explanations. Also, what others have said- the amount of emails is too much! And it also kept telling me the trial had ended when I had used the code😩

  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?

That it allows my child to work more at maths (much needed!) and for the opportunity for more help

  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?

I think the interactive lessons would be good. However my child did not benefit from these as she was always online later than the teacher times. She is 13 so not a primary aged child...this should maybe be looked at by eedi to maybe consider extending lessons till 9pm for instance?

  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?

As above my daughter didn't benefit from these. We both did like the lessons though and mini tutorials.

  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?

A potentially interactive maths learning aid...

Hollieh89 · 24/06/2021 21:33

What did you like most about Eedi Family?
I liked the extra help i could give my daughter in maths.

  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
I liked the help we could ask for.
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
Very good.
  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?
Excellent online teaching tool
thebluefoxategreensocks · 25/06/2021 11:05
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family? I liked how thorough the teaching was and the videos the explained a topic were very good.
  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family? The chat based lessons were good and made sure the child knew something before they moved on.
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors? They were very useful and kept at a skill until it was learned. One niggle we found was that when it asked the child if they were correct, they could say yes even if they got it wrong. I realise that this method is to help the child but it does mean a child could "cheat" a bit through something they didn't want to do.
  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend? It's like having an extra math teacher in the house to help guide your child through either what they're already learning at school or challenge them on topics they are struggling with.
EnFlique · 25/06/2021 16:03

Unfortunately the initial test put my daughter off completely as she had no experience of many of the topics that were aimed at her year group.
It made her feel incapable and she refused to go back on!

  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?
  2. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
  3. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
  4. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?
1) we loved that there were online tutors and a chat function 2) definitely the live tutors 3) she really enjoyed the chat at the beginning but as Time went on her interest waned and she became a bit despondent, it would have been better if she was perhaps given a choice of topics so that she could mirror her school lessons (her words) 4) an up and coming online maths tutoring program.
Mymindblown · 25/06/2021 19:07
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?
My daughter thought it was pretty simple and easy to understand.
  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
The competition of ruby and saphire.
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
my daughter thought they were fine.
  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?
It's an interactive maths learning website. The site is much better than the first time round when we tested.
Logoplanter · 25/06/2021 19:22
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?

I really struggled to get my son to engage with it, sadly. It just didn't spark his interest. It wasn't particularly easy to navigate the few times we tried and the automated bot which popped up because you'd got something wrong (or mistyped) was annoying.

I do appreciate they are not necessarily comparable but my son really enjoys Times Tables Rockstars and other online maths tools and isn't averse to doing extra work but he had no interest in doing this.

  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?

The website was quite hard to navigate and not particularly inspiring so I find this difficult to answer.

  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?

As above, I struggled to get him to engage, the bot was a bit frustrating and long winded, but that may just have been the few topics he did.

  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?

An online learning tool, which could assist your child if they need detailed explanations about topics but be warned you may well be having to nag them to do the work!

rennie1811 · 25/06/2021 21:54
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family? I liked that their were tutors on hand to answer any questions that you may have had or if you didn't understand something.
  2. What was the best feature of Eedi Family? I think the best feature is the tutors when they are available. The interaction didn't change between when their was a tutor available and when their wasn't so my daughter wasn't too sure if there was someone actually looking at her answers or not.
  3. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors? Sometimes you just made a mistake like a typing error and it took you down the chat based lesson, I think it would have been good to give you an example and demonstration and then allow you back to the tutorial to have another go, if you then got it wrong again go down the lesson. I think Eedi would be better for older high school children as my daughter likes the maths programs which are game like and where you can accumulate points to buy items for characters etc, she found eedi a bit too school like and lost interest quite quickly each time she went on
  4. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend? A great resource for older children to reinforce their maths learnt at school - an online tutor
flipertyflop · 26/06/2021 08:15

I tested Eedi with my very reluctant and struggling 11 year old. I had hoped it would help boost his confidence somewhat.

  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?
The lessons were quite short and bitesized. If he got the questions correct, this was great for him.
  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
I would say the short lesson format and teacher explanations to each question whether the student got it right or wrong.
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
My son would type into the chat as if he was just talking and the replies sometimes didn't make full sense to him. It is a good concept though.
  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?
I would tell them it is a good tool for some consolidatory learning. If the child was able to complete the questions they would whizz through but if they got one wrong, the explanations could be long winded and then it was difficult to navigate back to where they started. My child worked this out eventually but as he is very reluctant in the first place, drawing anything out for too long isn't helpful to him. There are some good explanations to each question though, regardless of whether the answer is wrong or not, meaning the student can check why their answer is correct (my son often guesses). The explanations are understandable and concise. The chat function is a good feature but seems automated AI rather than an actual teacher answering. I did like the platform though.
Yummum80 · 27/06/2021 15:47

What did you like most about Eedi Family?

That it gave some structure to my child and to help her with her learning.

  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?

Chat function was good.

  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?

Dd liked it but found the chat had issues at times. She mainly used it in the evenings and weekends so never interacted with online teachers which was disappointing. It would be great if there was one available or that caught up with her at another time. I also feel the range of lessons and topics could have been wider, as my daughter found it easy at times and it didn’t challenge her.

  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?

An online maths support site for children.

NursieBernard · 27/06/2021 16:06
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?

That it covered a wide range of topics for a wide ranging age group.

  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?

The incentive to earn 'gifts'

  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?

There never seemed to be a tutor online at the times my child needed them.

  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?

Interactive maths tutoring website covering a large number of topics for a wide range of ages and abilities.

  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?

I was initially worried about asking my son to take part as he’s been learning online a lot due to the lockdowns and I felt that this may be a step too far. But fortunately my son really enjoyed the lessons and found Eedi helpful. I think our favourite thing was that there’s a lot of encouragement and praise for his efforts which he responds well to.

  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?

The best feature is the support and explanations that’s provided through chat.

  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?

I think this was the best feature on Eedi, as I didn’t have to see at the screen with him explaining every detail. He was able to work through the maths independently and anything that he wasn’t sure about could be explained through the chat feature.

  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?

I would describe Eedi as a hybrid between an online interactive maths resource and one-to-one maths tuition. It has all the usual features of an online maths website such as pre-prepared lessons and quizzes but also incorporates one-to-one support. It worked well for us because my son’s maths is relatively good and he get needs to brush up and build on his pre-existing mathematical knowledge. But if you have a child who is struggling in this area I’d probably seek one-to-one tuition because Eedi wouldn’t be able to provide the level of support needed.

RandomBob · 27/06/2021 19:16
  1. Child liked the message system where you get the help, chat bot. I liked the email saying what had been completed.
  2. The updates to me.
  3. Really liked it because he hasn't had something like that before but thinks there could be a few more responses like asking if the child wants the question rephrased.
  4. Good learning platform which parents can get an understanding of their child's ability.
axlbaby · 27/06/2021 20:47
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?
My daughter found it easy to use and engaged with it really well (after a slow start - I think mainly because they were doing SATS at school so her enthusiasm for any other learning was low!). She managed to use it solo after initial set up.
  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
My daughter liked being able to speak to someone and the tutoring feel. At times she got a bit frustrated with the explanations when she got something wrong.
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
I didn't really see much of what she did with this but she enthused about them to me.
  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?
I'd describe it as a good maths support tool if you've got a child who wants to engage with it. I think my younger daughter would have found it tricky to navigate.

Overall it was a positive experience. She has asked me if we can subscribe

nat0202 · 27/06/2021 21:11
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?
The response and 'tutor' aspect helped child feel supported and that help was available. This also felt personalised.
  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
The site was very easy to navigate and it fully involved the parent in their child's learning. Even if I was not able to sit in a lesson, I was kept informed by Eedi.
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
These were really popular at first but over time I noticed my child was less engaged and did not always use this, even if unsure of a question.
  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?
A middle ground between a physical tuto and supporting your child with workbooks/parental numbers
Murraytheskull · 27/06/2021 23:29
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?

It was easy to use and colourful to draw the kids attention.

  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?

The email updates were useful as I dont always get told what shes found easy or difficult.

  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?

The fact you could have a tutor at your hands quickly and easily was really useful.

  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend?

I found it similar to Explore Learning (which we have also used). So a useful tool for learning.

Murraytheskull · 27/06/2021 23:34

I should add however that my daughters account stopped registering the input towards the goodie box after her second visit so without that incentive she refused to log on again.

justamoment · 28/06/2021 00:04
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family? My teen really found the lessons helpful - the format really worked to make the material accessible and incentivised her to engage.
  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family? The lessons and the prompt to encourage/remind routine participation.
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors? Really good for gaining better understanding of and clarifying specific topics that were found particularly challenging.
  2. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend? Good, accessible, customisable resource. User friendly. Incentivises engagement even for a potentially reluctant teen!
browneyesblue · 28/06/2021 07:47
  1. What did you like most about Eedi Family?
It was easy for DS to navigate and he was able to use it independently.
  1. What was the best feature of Eedi Family?
DS liked the little ‘celebrations’ after he completed a task. He felt pleased with himself.
  1. What did you and your child think of the chat-based lessons with our learning companion Eedi and our tutors?
It is very responsive, although the explanations could be long-winded at times.
  1. How would you describe Eedi Family to a friend
A good additional resource, but it didn’t help me identify areas in which DS might need more support. It couldn’t find a way to see which level he was working at. DS enjoyed it while he used it; he was fully engaged. It did have to keep reminding him to log in though.
