This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who tested Banjo Robinson’s personalised pen pal experience with their children aged 5 to 8. Banjo Robinson is a magical, globetrotting CAT who sends proper, paper post (and creative activities!) to children twice a month, from exciting destinations around the world!

At the same time as giving feedback on the thread below, Banjo Robinson testers also completed a survey. Results from the survey are now in and:

  • 88% said they were satisfied with the service, and
  • 89% would recommend to a friend or family member

Find out more or subscribe for your child here.

Testers received an initial introduction pack which includes: a personalised letter introducing Banjo and his travels, a world map, stickers to track Banjo’s progress, personalised stickers to use creatively, two sketch pages to colour, a reply page to draw and write their response, a reply envelope with postage stamp stickers and a recipe cards. Banjo then wrote each child a follow up letter detailing his next stop in his travels and including more goodies.

Here’s what Banjo Robinson has to say: “Banjo Robinson is a magical, globetrotting CAT who sends proper, paper post (and creative activities!) to children aged 5 to 8, twice a month, from exciting destinations around the world! Children can write back to Banjo and leave their replies under the sofa for overnight collection by 'Cat Mail’. Our website allows parents to add a paragraph to the end of the next letter their child receives (PS message), so that Banjo can answer their questions, reference their recent achievements, or simply send love and encouragement.

Each delivery includes a personalised letter from Banjo (now written by children’s author, Anna Kemp!), reply stationery, a colouring-in activity, personalised stickers, country facts, and a recipe from each country. Children also receive a big, beautiful map of the world poster with their first letter - they can add country stickers to this as they follow along with Banjo’s world tour!"

Testers, please answer the following questions as well as completing the short feedback survey which we have emailed to you:

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

All testers who leave the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Non-testers, if you’re reading this feedback and think that your child would like to receive letters from Banjo, you can get 50% off a 3 month subscription using the code BANJOLOVESMN at the checkout, on the Banjo Robinson website. This includes a big, beautiful map of the world to follow along with Banjo on his travels and six deliveries!

Thanks and good luck!

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
It is a nice idea but not sure it would be an interesting character for all children.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
My child loves receiving 'post' and it was a nice touch that its personalised.

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
Yes but would have didnt feel this was too necessary.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
I loved the stationery and the way it was designed. Also the maps and facts were a great part.

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
My child may have been on the young side for this so maybe they can be aimed at different ages

speakfriendandenter · 28/04/2020 10:25

I tried the pen pal experience with my 5yo daughter.

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
My daughter liked that he was a cat and the star on his face. She liked drawing him and found him easy to copy. I liked that he made mistakes and sometimes got into trouble, as this made him relatable to my child.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
It didn't really feel very personalised. I liked that we could add a PS on and my daughter liked the added note, but as it was at the end, it didn't really engage her. Maybe having it at the start as a 'thank you for your letter' introduction would work better?

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
As noted above, my daughter liked it, but I felt it lacked impact.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
I personally liked the education information in the letter. We used the map to look at where places around the world were, how far from is they were from us and what was near it. My daughter loved the stickers and the branded envelope and paper. The recipe was very random and I cannot imagine many children enjoyed it!

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
Maybe more personalised input for parents to add to engage their children.

We did like the idea and we it encouraged us all to write more letters and cards to family and friends. I think my daughter was maybe a little young still to engage with it. I can imagine her getting a lot more from it next year.
Thanks for the opportunity to try this!

you:

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

My son was very excited about Banjo and started to imagine where he could be and identify what cat was telling stories on him. He's only just turned 6 though. I feel for older children it might not have the same impact.

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

My son loved receiving a letter. He was so excited but for his age range a it was a long read and some of the words were beyond his comprehension level so he needed a lot of help. He would have benefitted from a shorter letter or at least simpler language.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

I think it's a great feature and he really enjoyed the fact that Banjo knew so much about him. In his mind Banjo is now a super secret agent cat!

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

We loved the map. My son enjoyed thinking about where Banjo could be on his adventures. He also spent time looking at the places he'd been and it was a great conversation starter. He's excited to find it where banjo is next.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

It's expensive for what it is, we've only had one box so far so maybe the next one will change my mind on this but I'm not sure we will keep up the subscription as we have other subscription boxes which seem better value.

Beach11 · 28/04/2020 19:55
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? Thought he was interesting and playful. He is charming
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? He wouldn’t buy into the idea that Banjo is real. He thought is was daft but did like hearing about all of the different places.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I did write ps message, thought it was a nice touch to make more personal.
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? Interesting, fun and educational
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? More in the place he is visiting & going to next. I thought the information was simple. Please have an activity sheet based on where Banjo is.

Nice idea but just didn’t work for us.

Thank you for the opportunity

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
I liked him, I'm not sure why he's a cat, but my son likes all animals, so he was amused enough by that. I have to say that my son doesn't actually believe that a cat wrote to him though. Either way, I feel like a character introduction sheet might have been a good idea. The letters are written from the perspective of a character with a developed personality, but there isn't much of an introduction to them. I think that it might benefit engagement levels.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
My son is 6 and is always thrilled to get post, so he was very excited. He enjoyed the fact that the letter referred to him personally and it kept him engaged whilst reading. He loved the map! I think the think about the posting under the sofa is hit or miss dependant on the child. My son told me not long after his 5th birthday that he knew Santa was really people's parents and that the idea of a tooth fairy is ridiculous. That bit tripped me up a little with the credibility and I didn't know how to answer his grilling questions about how on earth a cat would get into our home, or indeed pick up a letter with it's paws.

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
Yes I did, he enjoyed the fact that the letter mentioned his personal likes and achievements and I managed to use it to encourage his home learning, so I think this bit can be really beneficial if used cleverly by the parent.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
I think the fact that he feels that he's actually writing to somebody (even though he realises it's not actually a cat!) encourages him. I really struggle to get him to write, even though he's bright, he doesn't really enjoy it. He loved the map and the stickers and this led to learning about which animals come from which countries. I think the recipe sheet could easily be left out or preferably replaced with more facts about the country he visited, which I found to be a little thin on the ground. The quality and feel of the printed materials is great, but I think it would benefit from more educational content. Maybe a quiz.

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
Overall it's a great idea and wonderfully presented. My son enjoyed it as is, even if he wasn't totally invested in the story, however it could be even better. I've probably already mentioned this above, but I think it needs more content about the travelling around the world aspect and geographical information. After all ,that is supposed to be what the cat does. The recipe card was a definite no for us.

I feel as though he doesn't need to be a cat (or animal). Only a few kids, especially at the older end of the intended age group are going to believe a cat is writing them letters. It would be nice if it could be a human child character. That way they might believe they were writing to another kid. You could still cartoonise them and potentially say that they'd drawn the picture of themselves and encourage the recipient to do the same in the response letter too.

Having said all this, I have signed up for an additional 3 months at 50% off, because it has helped to get my son interested in geography and we carried on our own studies. He even used google himself to look up the correct colours for the Sri Lankan flag to colour in the sheet, which I have to admit, I didn't even know! I'm not sure I would have signed up at full price, but £12.49 is great value!

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? I liked him. He was funny and engaging for my child.
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? He loved it. Getting a letter in the mail was magical for him and he really bought into the whole experience.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I did. I found the first one quite tricky to do as I didn’t know what style to aim for, so a few engaging suggestions would have been helpful.
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? It was a lot of fun for my child and I will sign up for a bit longer as he is asking when his next letter will come! It was educational - he has stuck the map on the wall and has spoken about it a lot.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? A bit more help with the PS section at the start.
BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 28/04/2020 22:45

1) What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? I thought Banjo was brilliant, he engaged my DD from the off

2) How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? She thought it was amazing & couldn't wait to write back to him!

3) Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I did, I thought it was a great way to make the whole thing more plausible to DD

4) What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? The fact that she was able to learn about other countries, as well as encouraging her to write (& enjoy it). She asked to find out more about Sri Lanka after finishing her letter.

5) If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? My DD didn't have much interest in the recipe cards (despite normally enjoying cooking) so I'm not sure if these add much. I think she'd have enjoyed more information about where he was visiting.

seaduck · 29/04/2020 08:57
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

My son really enjoyed him, it's a good idea.
2) How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
He really really enjoyed the fact that Banjo knew stuff about him, this was his favourite part.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

Yes I did, this is a great way to add in more details than the generic info provided.

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

It got him involved in writing which he's often reluctant to do so that was good. He really enjoyed receiving the letters.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

I would prefer more of the information about the country in a more accessible form. My son really enjoys learning about countries but he found it all in a long text quite difficult to engage with. More of a short fact book included he would enjoy more. The geographic element gets a bit lost. The language in the letter could be simplified.

Galadriel88 · 29/04/2020 11:17
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
The character is soo cute and playful
  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
My girl absolutely loved it. She was so happy to receive something in the post for her
  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
Yes, I did. I really like it. It makes the experience so personalized
  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
A great subscription that helps her reading and writing, especially now we are stuck in the house. 5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? Little games probably like puzzles
eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 29/04/2020 17:14
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

It was ok. My 5yr old was neither interested or disinterested he was more excited about his own post than the character.

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
He liked getting a letter for him but the wording of the letter and banjo cat language was boring for a 5yr old letter was too long and even as an adult I had lost the will after the 2nd paragraph let alone over a page of A4.

  2. Did you write a PS message in your child’s
letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

I did and this bit he enjoyed

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

I'm afraid it's not something my child was interested in.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Perhaps different variations of the letter for different age groups as the style of letter and content was not right for a 5yr old however the character too babyish for an older child. I think in this world of technology it's a nice idea but needs some work.

MilkyMamma · 29/04/2020 17:48
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? I thought it was good, fun and interesting
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? He was absolutely DELIGHTED, I wish I filmed his reaction, he couldn’t believe it.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? Yes, loved it first time but second time didn’t get to do it on time so I ended up paraphrasing for my sons benefit and thankfully he didn’t read it and see it wasn’t there!!
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? I liked all the little touches, stickers always go down well. And I like the educational side for geography. It’s timed really well with lockdown!
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? Maybe for the reply letter to be less wordy? Felt a bit hard to read and I think some of it was going over my 5 year olds head!
allybird1 · 29/04/2020 19:09
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? Great character. Very likeable and engaging. You can really imagine him skulking around the neighbourhood talking to other cats. My children have made up lots of stories about him and his exploits. So it's the gift that keeps giving in as far as sparking their imagination.
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? He was overjoyed to receive a letter addressed to him as he doesn't ever receive any. It made him feel special, even though his siblings were jealous.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I thought it was a great feature which I used in the first letter. Unfortunately, due to the postal problems I couldn't add this for the second letter the first letter was delayed.
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? Very educational with the details of the country. Helped fire up my child to write letters back with the promise of more correspondence and the possibility of a prize when they had collected all the stickers. This was very motivating.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? More personalisation would be a good addition. Maybe a change of items with the package. However. I thought it was an excellent concept and I am really impressed and thankful for letting my son and I trial your product.
MessyJ87 · 29/04/2020 20:24
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? It was a fun character which caught my little ones attention as he loves animals.
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? My child really enjoyed finding the letters. He was excited to open and see what was in the envelope.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I did for the second letter, which my child enjoyed. Although, it was a bit of luck that this fitted in with the letter and what we had been talking about!
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? It's a fun, unusual way to catch your child's attention and promote reading and writing. My child found the letters to hard to read but did have a go at writing back.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? It's quite hard to picture what Banjo is talking about (the sights across the world) so maybe more of a postcode style with colour picture of what ever it is would definitely help.
Authenticcelestialmusic · 29/04/2020 20:59
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? It is very cute. The children liked him aged 4,4 and 6. We read a lot of stories and I think they liked his character.
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? They loved it. We had the envelope addressed to two of the children (twins) but put the ps to all three. All three have drawn pictures and coloured.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?I did write a ps and I liked this feature as it makes it more child specific. I would be concerned that I’d forget to do the ps if I had a subscription
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? I like the fact it is real post (not digital tech), I like the few activities and the introduction to geography. They remembered a few of the Sri Lanka facts. They asked for the map to go on the wall. They spent Time on the colouring And our 6 year old Boy wants to write back.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be, nothing the children enjoyed receiving the post and competed the activities
PeazlyPops · 29/04/2020 21:15
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
We liked the character, it is very similar personality-wise and writing style to a popular children's book (Toto the Ninja cat) so my child was intrigued.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
Surprised to receive mail but felt the concept/contents was too young for him and it didn't really interest him after he'd quickly read it.

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
Yes I did but it doesn't really make sense I'm the context of the letter and was quite random! It would be better if we had a "theme" for the P.S, e.g asking us a specific question about the child.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
It seems like a lovely idea but my child really wasn't interested and didn't write back at all. He felt quilty and hoped Banjo word forgive him!

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
Some more guidance on the initial information to provide. It asked if we had a pet and what type.. I said yes, a fish but that was used in the letter to say leave the letter under the sofa and the fish will make sure Banjo gets it, which didn't really work, my son was confused. He was also a little creeped out by the first letter which said a neighborhood cat said he was cool (or something along those lines) - it obviously played on his mind because he was wondering which one and thought perhaps he's being spied on Grin.

Overall whilst this is a sweet idea I think the content of the letters needs more work.

shoebedo434 · 29/04/2020 22:04
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? he was a fun character. we have two cats so because he was a cat made my child extra interested
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? we would leave the letter on the doormat for him to find, he was very excited and opened it straightaway.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I did and I think it is great for personalising the letter to your child. his face lit up when Banjo mentioned something about our house or something he had done
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? what stood out was how excited my son was and how eager he was to reply and get involved with Banjo
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? maybe spread the letters further apart as 2 letters in one week meant we rushed to read and reply and complete the activities
Goingovertosusanshouse · 30/04/2020 08:31
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? Really cute and funny.
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? Ds was so so excited to receive post!
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I did on the first one but when the second email came I thought I’d already done it so I didn’t do it for the second Leeds! Great feature though.
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? Really fun and a great way to encourage writing. I am going to do something similar with my reception class when we finally get back to school.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? A little longer between letters.

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

I thought he was fun, great for younger childrens imagination

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

She loved receiving a letter in the post with her name on and loved it was personalised all the way through.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Our daughter knew that putting the letter under the sofa wouldnt really get it sent but she loves imagination play so played along well but maybe another idea could be forth that would be about more believable.

My daughter enjoyed being creative so it was fun for her

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

She liked the idea but the under the sofa thing she clicked on with so she didn't find it realistic

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

I did but it didn't have the whole pen pap factor to it

We enjoyed the Map as we have travelled to a few countries so were able to speak of them however not all countries were losted so it wasn't useful

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Make it more approxahable realistic

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

He was sweet, my daughter liked him a lot.

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

DD couldn’t believe that Banjo knew they name it her favourite teddy and her sister. She was very excited.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

We were unlucky that our post was delayed so I didn’t receive the first letter in time to meet the deadline for the PS for the second letter. I know DD would have loved it.

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

All of the above. It’s a fun way to teach children about other countries, new words etc. DD was very engaged in the process and write back to Banjo straight away.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Posting the reply under the sofa was easy to forget as parents, we only just rescued the second letter before breakfast!

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? I think he's quite good fun but, for us, it would have been better if he was a human explorer. Lucas simply didn't believe that a cat could write the letter or understand a reply. He just kept saying "it's a person really"
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? We tested "Banjo" before and this was definitely better. Lucas absolutely loved the personalised PS and kept asking how the cat knew about his sparkly pencil. The letter itself was a bit long and he struggled to maintain interest. Perhaps the personalised PS element could somehow be moved into an earlier place to help maintain focus?
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? Yes. We wrote a PS in both letters and this was definitely the best part of the letter.
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? The personalised PS was definitely the best. Lucas did the colouring both times and was very excited by the map initially and kept pointing out places/landmarks he already knew about. He wasn't fussed about adding the stickers from the second letter though. The story with the Sri Lanka letter almost got in the way of the facts within the letter - I liked the recipe idea though. That's a nice and tasty way of learning about other cultures.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? I would change it from a cat to a human explorer - but then I have a very literal child!! I think he would have found it more believable to write to a human.....an interactive website to back up the letters would also be great. We'd get more out of a subscription that offered an online and postal option (even if that cost a little more)

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
Fairly interesting character. We love our pets; cats and a dog so banjo was instantly accepted.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
Pure joy! My daughter (6) was extremely excited to firstly receive any sort of mail to open and secondly a letter and package with stickers etc resulted in squeals of delight!

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
Great feature, made it much more personalised, she really believed the animals had been passing on her amazing achievements!

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
Mainly fun, Mia couldn’t read the letter herself but thoroughly enjoyed listening to me read it to her. She loved the colouring in page I even had to create a photocopy for her older brother (9) to join in the colouring in session! She liked adding the stickers to the world map and writing the letter back to banjo. Which included little pictures and bits and bobs she thought banjo would love to see. She would then go round explaining to our pets that her letter was stamped and under the sofa ready for collection! Reminding them frequently throughout the day! Smile

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Maybe a bit more to keep her entertained linking in with the Country theme. Eg Sticker activity sheets, like mosaic fill sheets or puzzles like spot the difference. Or send mini collectibles from each theme country. My daughter really loves her mini collectable ‘things’ eg maybe erasers rather than useless plastic stuff.
