Read what Mumsnet users and their children thought of Banjo Robinson’s personalised pen pal experience

LucyBMumsnet · 22/04/2020 10:19

This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who tested Banjo Robinson’s personalised pen pal experience with their children aged 5 to 8. Banjo Robinson is a magical, globetrotting CAT who sends proper, paper post (and creative activities!) to children twice a month, from exciting destinations around the world!

At the same time as giving feedback on the thread below, Banjo Robinson testers also completed a survey. Results from the survey are now in and:

  • 88% said they were satisfied with the service, and
  • 89% would recommend to a friend or family member

Find out more or subscribe for your child here.

Testers received an initial introduction pack which includes: a personalised letter introducing Banjo and his travels, a world map, stickers to track Banjo’s progress, personalised stickers to use creatively, two sketch pages to colour, a reply page to draw and write their response, a reply envelope with postage stamp stickers and a recipe cards. Banjo then wrote each child a follow up letter detailing his next stop in his travels and including more goodies.

Here’s what Banjo Robinson has to say: “Banjo Robinson is a magical, globetrotting CAT who sends proper, paper post (and creative activities!) to children aged 5 to 8, twice a month, from exciting destinations around the world! Children can write back to Banjo and leave their replies under the sofa for overnight collection by 'Cat Mail’. Our website allows parents to add a paragraph to the end of the next letter their child receives (PS message), so that Banjo can answer their questions, reference their recent achievements, or simply send love and encouragement.

Each delivery includes a personalised letter from Banjo (now written by children’s author, Anna Kemp!), reply stationery, a colouring-in activity, personalised stickers, country facts, and a recipe from each country. Children also receive a big, beautiful map of the world poster with their first letter - they can add country stickers to this as they follow along with Banjo’s world tour!"

Testers, please answer the following questions as well as completing the short feedback survey which we have emailed to you:

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

All testers who leave the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Non-testers, if you’re reading this feedback and think that your child would like to receive letters from Banjo, you can get 50% off a 3 month subscription using the code BANJOLOVESMN at the checkout, on the Banjo Robinson website. This includes a big, beautiful map of the world to follow along with Banjo on his travels and six deliveries!

Thanks and good luck!

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

My daughter wasn't overly interested when I read the story before the first letter but she remembered it when the letter arrived. She loves animals so she enjoyed that it was a cat.

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

She was really excited to receive the letter and knew from the envelope what it was. She loves getting letters and she really enjoyed the fact that everything was there to write back. The map was an especially big hit with her.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

I did. It was a good idea but I had to add the PS message for the 2nd before we received the 1st letter so had to keep it vague as no idea what she would write back.

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

My daughter enjoys learning about other countries so this was especially good. She enjoyed the stickers and was learning about locations as she was doing it.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Personally the idea of a globetrotting cat is hard to believe and I think it would be just as fun to have another child as the pen pal as it makes it more believable. Also the idea of putting it under the sofa is a pain, bit like the tooth fairy you only remember to collect when you are tucked up in bed! Maybe a little post box would be an idea as in line with real mail.

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

I thought he was interesting, my nearly 5 years old, completely believed the story, my 8 years old was dubious about a cat that could travel, write and collect letters.

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

My 8 years old who was the named child for testing the letters, was excited about it, and got her sister to join her.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

yes I did, I though it was a good way to answer any questions that the children ask in their reply to Banjo. I wish however that more could be done to personalised the letters.

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

the fact that the children have to hand write a letter back, is very good for practising handwriting.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

I would have an option when 2 children or more can take part in the same letter.
as my 8 years old and nearly 5 years old wrote the letter back together but then Banjo's reply was only addressed to the 8 years old.

also, the first letter, I wouldn't send it in a clear plastic wrap, but in a big paper envelope. as in the clear plastic wrap it looked like junk mail to me at first.

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
The character is cute and funny. My daughter found it very engaging.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
I was actually surprised how excited my daughter was to receive the letter. She responded right away (normally it's a bit of a struggle to get her to write anything so that's a huge bonus), and she has talked about her "cat friend" Banjo, and asked when she'll receive the next letter many times.

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
I liked this feature a lot, as it meant something specific to my daughter's response could be added to the next letter she received.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
The personalisation really made it magical for my daughter. I like that she can add stickers to the map and learn about the world while having fun.

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
I think I would like a little more info on the countries visited.

Asuwere · 23/04/2020 12:38

1) What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
DS seemed to like him.

2) How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
He seemed to really enjoy getting mail addressed to him. The letter was a bit long to read himself but he liked looking at all the bits that came with it.
He also understands how mail works so was a bit confused by the putting a reply under the sofa and cats breaking into the house to collect the mail. Especially as 'banjo' is supposed to be travelling so how does he get a reply?

3) Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
I did but I didn't like it to be honest. I didn't like to be involved in the lies - preferred it to just come from 'banjo'.

4) What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
DS enjoyed the stickers and little envelopes and has enjoyed looking at the map. It's good that we can discuss different parts of the world and he can try to find it.

5) If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
The letter was a bit long for younger ones to read themselves. The first letter had a sticker for England to put on the map but didn't have any information about that country, it did mention that 'banjo' had been in our area but we don't live in England so DS was a bit confused about that.
Would maybe be nice to have arrows or lines on the map to show 'banjo's route so you can work out where he's been and where he's going.

Thanks for letting us try this.

Bee70 · 23/04/2020 12:57

Thank you for letting us try this out, my son (aged 8) was very excited to receive the letters!

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

My son liked him because he was funny and loved to hear about the adventures all of the world.

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

He was really excited when he received the letter and he enjoyed looking at the map to see where Banjo had been. He liked hiding the letter under the sofa, but was confused as to why our pet was taking the letter, and how it would get to Banjo.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
Yes - It is nice to be able to personalise it a bit, but it was hard to keep it in the same tone as the rest of the letter. It was difficult to know what to write as I couldn't see the rest of the letter.

  2. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

He loved the experience of getting a letter. He didn't really get anything out of it educationally, and the main draw was just the reciept of a letter in general.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

More activities in each letter, and the option to get a replacement map as my son lost his within a day!
I think there either needs to be more in each pack, or cheaper, as we would struggle to pay nearly £5 per letter

lisylou21 · 23/04/2020 13:24

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? My daughter loved the colouring sheet and the ps section
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? I wouldnt change anything
racheltravel17 · 23/04/2020 14:30
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
Thought the character was fun, different and good to engage with.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? My son was in the upper age group but he really enjoyed receiving the letter and map, discussing it with his younger sister and taking the time to reply.

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
Yes, I did but wasn’t sure what to write for the first one so a bit more guidance would be good - it was easier to write the 2nd PS as knew what style it needed to be in.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
Educational benefits are great - I travel a lot for work so it was really good to be able to teach them about the world as well as where I’ve travelled to. My son enjoyed writing back.

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? Nothing.

BigBrightStarz · 23/04/2020 14:48
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
The character was cool looking, fun and interesting.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
My 6 year old daughter absolutely loved receiving these letters, she was eagerly waiting for a reply and was so excited to find out what would be in the next letter and where hes travelling to next! Was a tad gutting that we didn't recieve the email to add the PS message to the 2nd letter as she added a joke to the first letter but in the reply she was asked if she knew any jokes. We did manage to turn it around by saying that maybe his letter was inspired by her joke from the first letter (phew!) She really does love this!

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
It's really good to be able to do so so my daughter feels her letter was read and it's a little more personal.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
It's fun, colourful and its educational leaving you wanting to find out more.

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Having a little more time to be able to add a PS message or being sent a reminder a day before the deadline to add the message.

Thank you so much for this opportunity, my daughter has truly loved this! X

GeordieTerf · 23/04/2020 15:38

1) What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
Banjo is cute and appeals to both children and adults. I really liked the background story too. It was realistic with just the right amount of magic.

2) How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
She loved getting a letter in the mail! She gets very excited whenever the postman comes now! I wish the letters came more often for this reason.

3) Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
Yes. This is a lovely aspect. Our child now believes that the neighbourhood cats are watching our house! This also encouraged my dd to write back.

4) What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
I really liked the story and concept. I think that it's important for kids to learn about geography, and this is an easy and fun way for them to do this.
I also liked the reading and writing involved. It didn't feel like a chore for our dd. She wanted to read Banjo's letter and write back.

5) If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
Some of the vocabulary in the letter was too challenging for my dd to read. She needed a lot of help with the pronunciation. I would prefer it if the letter was entirely readable by her.
I also don't think that the paper provided for the child to write back is large enough.

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

I thought the character was fun - being a cat helped as my daughter is a fan of cats.

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

She was really excited - she loves getting post addressed to her and really enjoyed looking through all the bits that came with the letter. She came up to me an hour later and checked whether it was real (of course I said it was!)

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

Yes and she was very excited by that bit! I think it would be easier writing it for subsequent letters because you can see how it fits in with the whole thing.

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

It was fun and had a reasonable amount of content so felt like a treat for my daughter.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Difficult to say - she enjoyed it. I don’t know whether she would on an ongoing basis but the first letter was certainly a big success.

KMoiz · 23/04/2020 17:45
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
My son loved it . He was intrigued by the character and thought that our neighbours cat was actually banjo . It’s very innovative .

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
He was surprised to receive his own letter with all the perks. The look was personalised and he wanted to share his experience through social media .

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
It’s great as you can personalise the item but it was difficult as it was different to the writing style of banjo.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
It was the idea that something imaginary or a adventurous character could write to him . He was so happy to receive his own letter which told him about the world . The educational and aswell as the prospect of personal friend was delightful .

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
I did not receive any stationary so was looking for it. Otherwise it was really good experience . Just I would appreciate the cost could be made more economical and some more interactive options can be utilised such as puzzle or mystery egg .

TheOtherSideOfTheMountain · 23/04/2020 18:59
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? My son really liked him, despite having no particular affinity with cats! We forgot to initially read the Banjo story, but read it in hindsight and that definitely helped.
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? He was sooo excited as he never receives post! His older brother gets a magazine (Aquila) so this was a special something just for him. He was really keen to keep getting them too, and the language of the letter was perfect for him to read by himself but still provided a bit of a challenge (high ability KS1)
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? Yes, really liked this and made it much more real for him. Good opportunity to add things for him to work on, or provide praise too
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? Just a nice thing to look forward to "just for" DS, also encourages his reading, writing and geography in a fun way. Nice bit of nostalgia too - I always had pen pals and it's something kids have lost out on with social media etc.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? If just one thing, um probably the self-addressed envelope (to our address) would be the one it comes in to begin with, or else not bother. It seems weird to include it separately- sort of ruins the realism.
MadameJosephine · 23/04/2020 20:04
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

DD thought he was cute and looked friendly

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

She loved getting the first letter in the post and was very excited but didn’t like Banjo mentioning her ‘getting into mischief’. She was a bit confused about putting the letter under the sofa when his arrived in the post and couldn’t understand why she couldn’t put it in the postbox. I probably made that a bit worse by forgetting to move it the first night she put it under the sofa.

The novelty wore off very quickly as she read the second letter realised it wasn’t a proper reply to her letter and discarded it

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

I didn’t really get what that would look like so I didn’t do it with the first letter and the deadline for writing a PS to the second letter passed before the first letter even arrived so we didn’t use it

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

Nothing really, I thought it would’ve shot more interactive but it wasn’t

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

I’d like it to be more interactive or include more activities

MadameJosephine · 23/04/2020 20:06

thought it would’ve been* more interactive but it wasn’t

BonjourMinou · 23/04/2020 20:13
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

Adorable, just perfectly suited to the age group Banjo is aimed at.

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

She absolutely LOVED it! “All of this, for me?” She said. The letter was quite long for her to read (she’s a bit of a reluctant reader, compared to her brother) but I did convince her to read a couple of paragraphs while I read the rest. She wrote her reply immediately and was amazed that her cat could deliver the reply to Banjo.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

Yes, I think this feature is critical to making the children believe Banjo has received their letter.

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

The world map is absolutely beautiful and it’s a great way of encouraging children to write.

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

Nothing. I’ve signed up for a subscription 😊

SecretScaryFriend · 23/04/2020 20:43
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? Sweet. My daughter loves cats so he was always going to be popular here!

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? I made sure she found them on the doormat. This made her thrilled as she was excited to spot a letter addressed to her. She couldn’t understand how this cat knew all about her. She asked if I had special letters from animals when I was little. She felt lucky and excited.

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I enjoyed the PS feature and I was glad I did it both times. It helped to build the mythology that this cat has a “cat network” telling him things and delivering for him.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
The excitement of physical post. The surprise factor was amazing. The educational factor was nice but I’m not sure she took lots of it in when she was excited to get to the map and stickers! That will build over time I think. I appreciate the prompt to do fun writing practice and map-read!

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? I would possibly add a little more geography about the country in the letter rather than so many specifics about landmarks that a. 6 year old hasn’t heard of. In the Sri Lanka one, she had not heard of the place in question (nor had I!) so she didn’t really understand the story too much. Maybe my daughter is on the young side for some of the content so this isn’t a major criticism.

Backhometothenorth · 23/04/2020 21:40
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? Simple, relatable, does the job
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? My daughter was absolutely delighted but for some reason both our letters arrived on the same day
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? Yes she was thrilled
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? Fun. Children rarely get post so it is a fantastic concept. The map is beautiful and has been studied often
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? Could you include some puzzles, a treasure hunt etc?
beany5 · 23/04/2020 21:48
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
My daughter liked the character although at 7 years old she immediately realised it was a pretend character. He was very informative and friendly.

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?
She enjoyed receiving the first letter and opened up the map to affix the sticker. She spent a minute or two looking at it. With the second letter she seemed happy to receive the letter but quickly put it away.

  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
We put a PS on the first letter and I highly recommend personalizing it for a good experience.

  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
I think if this was aimed at younger children that the educational benefits of this would be fantastic. Your child could learn a lot about communication and other cultures / diets / parts of the world etc. I imagine that if my daughter had been younger that she would have found this delightful.

  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
I would change the age range of the group it is aimed at to 3 to 6.

fourlegstwolegs · 23/04/2020 21:49
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? Sweet and engaging
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? He LOVED it and was so so excited. He keeps asking me when the next one is coming (which makes me feel bad as the trial is over!)
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? I did but the timings didn't work for the second one - but it's a great idea
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? All of the above, and is good handwriting practice and a good antidote to screens
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? I think it's a little pricey, and I think more could be done to make it more personal. Ie the replies could be more tailored.

  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?
He was fun and engaging for my daughter

  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

My daughter has previously received letters from banjo Robinson and has often talked of him so she was very excited to receive another one.

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?
The PS feature was really good. We used it to say how hard the lockdown must be and how well she was doing with school work at home.

  2. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?
Learning about different countries, what colours their flags are and some customs is great educational info.

  3. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

The subscription cost seems high for what you get. The initial pack with the map was great and weve spent a lot of time looking at the different countries. But the 2nd letter wasn't met with quite as much enthusiasm. There are lots of spaces for footprint stickers, to complete the map would be very expensive.

PenguinsCantFly · 23/04/2020 22:58
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character?

Love him! Really lovely concept - especially with him being able to connect with pets/local cats!

  1. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo?

Very excited! They loved the map and the stickers and the little envelope to leave their reply. They also lived that our cat was involved too!

  1. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature?

Really like the PS feature as I can use it as a way to highlight things that have gone well/different way to praise them!

  1. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else?

The high quality of all the bits - such attention to detail!

  1. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?

It could be nice to have a link to follow to see some 'live footage' of where he is?! But that is only if I had to think of something. So far, from what we've received it has all been great!

littlemonkeymum · 24/04/2020 11:19
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? Fun, though not sure my DD found a cat as interesting as she would another boy or girl. I think the character could be developed a bit to be more two-dimensional
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? She loved receiving a letter in the post with her name on as it's a rare occurrence. She was initially really excited but found the long letters a bit hard going as she's reception age. The novelty definitely wore off and she wasn't as engaged as I'd hoped.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? Yes, it made the letter more personal but it was difficult to write much as it wouldn't be in the same style as the letter.
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? The materials were good quality and very educational, and initially well-received but the novelty definitely wore off.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? Perhaps it could be adapted to be aimed more at specific ages as there's quite a difference between a 5 year old and an 8 year old. My DD would probably have enjoyed shorter letters that she could read herself rather than long ones that didn't maintain her interest.
ButterflyBitch · 24/04/2020 14:26
  1. What did you think of Banjo Robinson, the character? Quite fun. My daughter liked him and asked about what he was up to.
  2. How was your child’s experience of receiving the personalised letter from Banjo? She really loved getting post addressed to her. I had to read the letter to her though I think she could have done it but would have been slower.
  3. Did you write a PS message in your child’s letter(s)? If so, what did you think of this feature? Yes I did. She was gobsmacked that he knew about her. "But how did Banjo know I stole the icing from Daddy's cake?"
  4. What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? Delight and fun. I wouldn't say it's the most educational product. A few fun facts. My daughter enjoyed the letter writing and receiving the most.
  5. If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be? Probably the fact that a random cat called Buster comes to pick up the post from under a sofa. I had to resort to 'it's magic' to explain how he got in as we don't have a cat flap and we have an alarm on the downstairs overnight.

Was a good feature as thats what interested her the most and that banjo new things.
4) What stood out for you with Banjo Robinson? Delight and fun, educational benefits or anything else? Short letter to write back, she enjoyed the world map and finding the countries and putting the stickers on as well as the colouring pages.
5) If you could change one thing about Banjo Robinson, what would it be?
The letter to be more age appropriate, was to long she lost interest quickly. The only part she liked was the PS message and the info Banjo new.
