This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tested the personalised pen pal experience from Banjo Robinson the travelling cat, who helps boost creativity, reading and writing skills for their child/children.

Non-Tester? 90% of Mumsnet Tester's children wrote Banjo a reply and Banjo Robinson has now officially launched! They are offering 15% off full subscription charges with the code BanjoLovesMumsnet. This code is valid until 31/10/18.

Here’s what testers received:

  • An initial introduction pack which includes: a personalised letter introducing Banjo and his travels, a world map, stickers to track Banjo’s progress, personalised stickers to use creatively, a doodle sheet to colour, a reply page to draw and write their response, a reply envelope with postage stamp stickers.
  • A follow up letter from Banjo Robinson detailing his next stop in his travels including more goodies.

Here’s what Tree Climber Publishing have to say: “Banjo Robinson the cat is in India at the moment, checking out the Taj Mahal. He was at the pyramids last Tuesday, and next week he's off to the Great Wall of China. And while he’s away on his amazing travels, Banjo sends real, personalised letters to your child full of exciting tales all year round. Your child will get a world map and stickers to track Banjo’s progress and two personalised letters asking them to reply with pictures and messages.

Letters from Banjo Robinson encourage them to craft a reply, improving their writing skills and creativity. Parents can spend quality time with their children, away from tablets and TV, reading Banjo's letters, widening the child’s vocabulary, learning about different countries, and building communication skills."

Testers please answer the following questions:

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
  • What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Once subscribed, parents will be able to log on to their account and compose the closing paragraph of the next letter their child receives from Banjo, enabling them to address questions their child has asked, and creating an authentic back-and-forth correspondence between child and ‘cat’.’ A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

All testers who leave the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I was very satisfied with the letters - DS2 loved receiving the letters and they were thoughtfully put together with interesting information about the places 'Banjo' had visitors or was planning to visit.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
DS2 was thrilled to receive the letters (although because this was a new venture, there was a significant delay between him replying to the first letter and receiving the second which made him lose interest a bit). He was very motivated to write back to Banjo and engage with the idea of a cat pen-pal!
  • What did you like most about the letters?
Because this was in the testing phase, there was only a little personalisation element to the letters, but this was the best bit. DS2 was amazed and intrigued that this cat knew about him and it really persuaded him to get involved and take part on the letter exchange.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Some of the vocabulary was a little mature for a 5yo, and more personalisation and less time between letters would be improvements - but I believe this would be part of the deal when you actually subscribe.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
I would recommend Banjo to family and friends. I was pleased to see that the subscription cost has been lowered to the £5ish per month mark, because I feel this is a reasonable amount to pay for this subscription. Thanks very much for the opportunity to take part in this product test Smile

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
My eldest daughter was over the moon when she got her first letter, though she didn't believe I'd had a chat with a cat. The letter soon changed that. Love the added information to give it the personal touch but I did think we might have got a little bit more.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

They enjoyed them and wanted to find out more about the places he went and liked writing back too.

  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked it was personalised and had bits to make the kids believe a little more he was real.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Yes maybe add more information about the places he is visiting with the letter so like a facts booklet for the kids to keep and maybe puzzles or quiz too and price about £5
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes I would if more content was added and price was about £5

If they added more content like iv listed above like more information on the places he's going in a booklet for the kids to keep then I wouldn't mind paying £5-6 as its what I have paid for a magazine before now.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I thought they were very well put together, the stamps/stickers and map were a great educational addition. I think they are exciting and something to look forward to each month. We will be subscribing to the service.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My daughter was very excited about the concept of a cat writing her. She loves post so when she saw there was a letter for her she couldn't wait to open it. My daughter wrote back to both letters and loved placing them under the sofa and checking the postbox to see if he had replied.
  • What did you like most about the letters? The level of information included regarding his travels. The stickers the map was great and has been fantastic to look at the countries he travels to. It is great to engage childrens imaginations and encourage writing and reading.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? Possibly as time goes on more personalisation for subscribers. He could sent a birthday letter once a year.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Yes I would highly recommend perfect for children who have just learnt to read. Not sure older children would 'believe' so much.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

To be honest I was very underwhelmed with the actual content of the letters. I don't know if it was the constant delays on getting started but when they did arrive they had a lack in the wow department.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My daughter is almost 5 and she loved receiving letters that had her name on through the post. I don't think she ever believed that a cat was writing to her and did say as much, she wrote one reply because I asked her to. She loved colouring in the pictures and using the stickers.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I liked that they were personalised to my daughter. I also liked the design of the letters and envelopes.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

I felt the letters contained too much guff and line fillers instead of actual facts about the country. My daughter watches a free program on TV called Go Jetters and I feel she learns more about a country from there. I would personally get rid of the map for the stickers and replace it with a passport to stick the stickers in, you could also provide a map that would be already filled in to stick on the wall and would not need taking down to add to.

Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

No unless major changes were made, I don't feel if you are looking for a child to learn about the world that this is the product for you. I would look for a binder based collection that is more like a fact file. For younger children I would recommend the program above.

Girraferama · 15/09/2018 11:29

My daughter (just turned 5) really enjoyed the letters and massively bought in to the whole thing - i was quite amazed at how much she believed the story (though it did create some issues/anxieties about the dog being out of the house and meeting the cat etc!)

The delay between letters was a bit long - she had written back immediately and so was hoping for something quickly - i kept explaining he was away travelling!

As part of the trial the letters weren't personalised to the response that was sent - i believe they are when you purchase it. She spent quite a lot of time writing her reply and telling him things about herself, so i think it does really need to reflect this in some way in the reply to really make it magical.

I don't think i'd pay nearly £8 for it. I might pay £5.. but i'm not sure 2 letters a month would keep her engaged enough.

The materials you get - stickers, stationary, pictures etc are brilliant and it's really well thought out.

Maiyakat · 15/09/2018 13:26

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I was hoping the letters would encourage DD (6) to read, but the letters were way above her reading ability. This must be a difficult balance to get, as you want to get lots of information in. If there was an initial simple to read paragraph this would be good.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

DD was very excited with the first letter and engaged well with completing the tasks. She left her letter under the sofa and was excited when it was gone the next day. However I have struggled to get her to be interested in the second letter. I don't know if this is due to the novelty wearing off or the long gap between the 2 letters.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I liked the encouragement for children to write, and the personalised element at the end of the letter.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

It wasn't very clear what you were supposed to do with the stickers on the map.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Depends on the child - a confident reader would probably enjoy them more.

Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

Given the price of other similar products I think £5.35 is very reasonable if your child enjoys them and continues to complete all the activities.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
The letters are very long and the personalised bits come at the end. I had some reservations at introducing another "make believe" character which comes into our house. The letter was left the same evening as the tooth fairy was due a visit and there was some discussion over whether they would meet each other. Overall I liked them but it's a one off novelty for my daughter and wouldn't commit to a subscription.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My daughter loved the letters and couldn't wait to write her first reply. However wasn't so keen on writing the second one, novelty I think had worn off.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
Encouragement to get my daughter to read them herself and the information about the countries.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Personalisation more at the beginning.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Mmm not sure to be honest would tell them about it and explain how it works and then let them make their minds up if their child would like it or not.

No think it's too high when you're not really getting anything tangible.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I thought the idea was a really good one , however I was very underwhelmed with the actual letters , too long-winded for children
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
The first letter arriving through the post caused great excitement but the sender being a cat just didn't cut it no matter how hard I tried to convince her . She wrote back after the first letter but wasn't interested after that
  • What did you like most about the letters?
The personalisation
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More details about the countries visited and it should be written in a more child-friendly way , I would prefer my child to be writing to another child instead of a cat . As it is now I don't feel it would hold anyones interest for very long
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
No I wouldn't , every child is different and my 6 year old was never going to entertain a cat writing her letters however another 6 year old may happily believe so I guess it would be for individual parents to decide

I think its still a lot to pay for what you are actually getting
CreamKnackered · 15/09/2018 16:20

my daughter loved getting the letters and bought into it all, (she's 8) even when she caught me with her reply which she'd put under the sofa. A bit more thought is needed on the response element, like having an actual address (eg PO box) to send to because otherwise you could end up with 12 letters under your sofa or for you to throw away! I think the current price point of nearly £8/m is quite high for this, maybe £5/m would interest more people?

sosoverytired · 15/09/2018 16:37

My daughter was excited to receive a letter in the post. However the length of the letter meant she lost interest.
She does struggle with reading and writing so I was hoping this would help and encourage her. However she did quickly loose interest.
As some others have suggested maybe more personalisation and a token etc would be better going forward. Also map was very large and we had no wall space to put it up.

lucyrobinson · 15/09/2018 16:42

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I was really pleased with the content of the letter. Really liked the idea of the poster.

What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My son loved receiving his letter from Banjo. He put the poster straight up in his bedroom.
My son wrote straight back and drew a picture. He was excited to post it under the sofa. My son took a lot of convincing that Banjo was real and I’d met him.

  • What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

I liked to style of letter and that he could

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
lucyrobinson · 15/09/2018 16:48

Sorry I hadn’t finished writing

What did you like most about the letters?
I liked the map and that he could track him. Thought it was great he could learn about different countries. Loved the stickers too.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Glad the price has changed.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

I would recommend to friends and family.

I really liked this idea but it would be great if I didn’t have to pretend I’d met Banjo. My son is a believer but it took some convincing. He is 7 so a different route in would have been better.

TheVeryHungryMummapillar · 15/09/2018 18:20

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I genuinely thought it was great. My little girl is five and thought the whole thing wonderful. For the bits that she was too young for I just helped with, e.g. reading, and we had a lovely time looking at the map and talking about the different countries.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

She loved it and yes!

  • What did you like most about the letters?

We loved the interntional connection but also that it didn't rely solely on reading or writing - she loved the colouring - and that it was a lovely activity to do together.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

no

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

definitely.

I think we would subscribe to this service, it was great.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

The materials were of high quality and my child was very excited to get post addressed to him.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He found the letters too long and would've liked more info about the countries that Banjo visited. He didn't really buy into the make believe element so didn't write back.

  • What did you like most about the letters?
He LOVED the wall map and the stickers. Tracking Banjo's progress around the world was what he was most interested in.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More map related activities and more information about each country.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Yes for the new price.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Helen loved them. Once she rec’d the first one she was looking out for the next one

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
She liked that he seemed to know little details and as she loved it was personalised. She wrote back to the first one. Not the second but I know she will.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
Personalised
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Not good for families with multiple children.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Yes for families with one child it is ideal.
leanneth · 16/09/2018 09:18

Thank you for the opportunity to test these letters.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I quite liked them overall. I especially liked the reply stationery - that was very cute and made replying very easy. I think two per month would be a good frequency though for this test there seemed to be too much time between letters.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My daughter was very excited to receive the letters and especially the stickers with her name on. She wrote back to the first one straightaway and the other a few days after receiving.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked the reply stationery and personalised stickers. Oh, and the map- that’s a good idea!
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
If we could choose the countries that would be good as my daughter is particularly interested in some countries and it would be relevant to her to hear something about those countries.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Not sure. I think we’d need to see if the momentum and excitement continued for a few more letters or if the novelty quickly wears off.

Do you think this is a fair price for the product?
£5.35 is a fair price, £7.90 was too expensive. If there was no minimum tie in period, I would consider trying this for £5.35 to see if my daughter remains as excited. I really like it giving her reading and writing practise and it being personalised. Plus everyone likes to receive unexpected letters in the post! 😁

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Considering they were free and personalised for the product test they were nice and an intriguing concept

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My son age 5 was initially very interested and did write back but has now forgotten about Banjo entirely
  • What did you like most about the letters?
The personalisation was a nice touch
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Some method of uploading the child's responses and the. Somehow the following letter from Banjo including a reference to the child's letter so that it feels more like a legitimate correspondence. In all honesty though I have no idea how this could be achieved
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
In their current incarnation probably bot

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I think the concept is great and I love the idea of bringing the hand written letter back into modern children’s lives. The letters we received were good but feel it was too ‘old’ for my child.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My DD loved the make believe element as she is very imaginative and also adores cats, so the idea of a cat pen pal really appealed. She loved writing back and the excitement and magic of it all was lovely for us all.

  • What did you like most about the letters?
The magic and make believe element. Also loved how it encouraged letter writing.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

My child lost interest pretty quickly once the letter had been read out. I think more activities or even different themes would be better ( along side geography ).

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

If there was more to it, or for a child that has a keen interest in geography, yes.

Thank you for the opportunity to try it out. We love the concept but feel it’s lacking something to fully engage children, especially younger ones.

tabby55 · 16/09/2018 11:53

Ah I missed the last question off! Sorry

£5.35 feels like a much better price but still feel it’s limited as a long term subscription service.

PickleandPoppet · 16/09/2018 12:05

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I was very satisfied with the letters and service, it got the reaction that I wanted from my little boy. The wait for the letter was long but my understanding is that once it is a live product the wait won't be so long.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My son got really excited about receiving the letters. He is 4 and so we would read the letter with him but he the length of the letter did mean he was losing interest in. He did get excited when personal touches were included, like the sofa colour. I believe that there will be a lot more customisation with the subscription and so that may help to keep his attention.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I really liked that the letters made he want to go and write and draw. He is learning how to write and so this encouraged him to try. He would tell us what he wanted to write, we would write it and then he would copy what we had written. We have in the past found it difficult to get him to want to sit and try to write and colour so this was great to see.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The length of the letter I think is too long. 2 sides of A4 writing is a lot for a 4 year old to keep their attention. More pictures of the actual countries would be great so that you could perhaps talk about what you could see. The idea is to learn more about the countries and so real photos from those places would help.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

I would recommend it for younger children perhaps 4-6 maybe as it is more believable for them that a cat would write them letters. They're also less likely to spot that a letter coming from India has a UK stamp!

  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

For £5.35 a month I think this fair and would pay for it with having 2 letters a month. If the personalisation was really good and there was more real pictures in to talk about then I would have considered paying up to £7 a month for 2 letters.

lynnheath50716 · 16/09/2018 13:17

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I thought the letters were very sweet and about the right length for my daughter 5 to have read to her and keep her interested.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My daughter is 5 and she loved the magic of receiving a letter in the post from Banjo Robinson, With the first letter she was very quick to reply and post her letter under the sofa!!!! I set the magic up and said that I had met banjo and he was going to write to her from all over the world.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked that they had a blank page (although an extra sheet would have been great) and an envelope with the special cat stamps (so that I could explain why we couldn't put them in the normal post box!!!)
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I would add an extra sheet so that there is a bit more space to wrote back, at 5b my daughters writing is still quite big!
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
I think these letters would be perfect for children who are aged 5, 6 or 7 as they are still young enough to believe the magic that there is a cat travelling the world who is writing to them, I think any older and they would know its mum or dad sorting it out!

I think that the £5.35 pricing is much better, I think this then competes with the kids magazines as the banjo letters become better value as you get two a month!

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Very satisfied. While my dd (5yo) started off a little mystified, she very quickly bought into the idea of Banjo and enjoyed the concept and writing back to him. The time between letters was great as it meant the subsequent letter was a surprise, and was appreciated more.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

The length of the letters is just right for us, with fun descriptions and a real sense of adventure. My daughter did write a couple of sentences back, but was more enthused with drawing. This was a great introduction to having a penpal.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The adventure - a cat being able to write, and writing from exotic locations is genuinely fun.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

No, this is a well thought out endeavour. Plenty of stickers and all the kit you need to respond.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

We have!

-A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

Very fair for what is a lovely product. We will be subscribing!

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Fairly satisfied as the letters were quite wordy and my child lost interest by the time I'd finished reading them to her. I really like the idea though.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
Very long for the age of my daughter (4) and she lost interest quickly. She was very excited though at getting letters through the post and did draw him a picture. She show no interest in writing/drawing so that was something at least though I thought I'd at least get her to write her initial on the letter but that didn't happen. Think maybe more pictures might help keep her interest.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked the personalisation and my daughter loved the fact Banjo knew our dog and kept mentioning it.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More age appropriate (changed for different stages) and pictures of where Banjo was.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Yes possibly, depending on the child.
A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product? Yes, I'd be more likely to use this product at that price.
