This activity is now closed

This is the thread for the 10 Mumsnetters who tested out the Ebac Dehumidifier for air drying their laundry indoors.

You can read a summary of their feedback here.

Non testers in order to be entered into a prize draw, where one MNer will win a £200 voucher, please answer this question: Do you own a dehumidifier and use it for indoor laundry drying - perhaps you have tips for making your laundry dry quicker? Or maybe have tips on how to make your clothes feel softer?

Here is what Ebac have to say: “The UK's wet climate often leaves no other choice than to dry laundry indoors. If you don't have the space or budget for a tumble dryer then radiators and airers can be the only way to get laundry dry. This takes time, creates space problems and leads to a build up of additional condensation and dampness around the home. An Ebac dehumidifier efficiently dries laundry but unlike a tumble dryer also eliminates excess moisture by removing condensation and dampness caused day to day activities such as showering, cooking and poor ventilation. This not only prevents mould and unpleasant odours but also filters the air during use helping improve air quality throughout the home.”

Testers please answer the following feedback questions:

  • How much water was collected/removed?
  • What did you feel were the benefits of using the dehumidifier over your usual method of drying laundry indoors?
  • Did you find there were any improvements in air quality/humidity/condensation? If so please explain
  • How easy did you feel the product was to use?
  • Would you continue to use this product and would you recommend it to a friend or family member?

All testers who post the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win a £100 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

We do have a dehumidifier, but it's currently in the loft, and has been for some time! It was bought to help dry out the cellar when we first moved into the house, which it did, but I have never thought about using it to help dry laundry, but hubby will be dispatched to the loft hatch tonight to find it - what a fantastic idea! It's such a struggle to dry in this weather when it's a constant drizzle outside.

I feel so stupid for not having thought of trying it before!

danigrace · 19/02/2018 16:34

We bought a dehumidifier very recently and have noticed it's made a massive difference to clothes drying times on the maiden and we can dry on the radiators without the house getting all humid and damp

Coffeechick · 19/02/2018 16:36

I'm a non tester but I've been interested in getting a humidifier to dry clothes in winter months but wasn't sure which size an model I should buy. This thread has made me very interested in looking into this model

I do not own a dehumidifier, I use my tumble dryer and heated airer. I would like to see all these three options compared and which one is economical in the long run.

I don't own a dehumidifier and every winter when drying clothes I wish I did. I have a tumble dryer but it makes the downstairs really warm and then the heating does not click on and dry the clothes on the radiator!

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 19/02/2018 17:12

Wow , this sounds great

I’ve used a dehumidifier when our roof leaked, a big industrial one but never thought of a smaller one to dry clothes

I’m off to google Grin

I bought an ebac dehumidifier in the autumn as the condensation was getting overwhelming. I wasn't expecting the added benefit of helping my washing dry so quickly. I put the dehumidifier next to the airer, press boost and it's dry by the morning. Sometimes I can get a couple of loads done in a day. Sheets dry really quickly compared to before.

On sunny days in the winter I still stick clothes on the washing line and then bring them in and the dehumidifier helps to take the remaining damp out of them.

Or maybe have tips on how to make your clothes feel softer?

I live in a bed water area so also use soda crystals and a descaling tablet in the washing machine as well as conditioner.

I don't own one and applied for this (unsuccessfully) - I'd love to try it out as I have no tumble dryer, or room for one and don't like the heating on too much as it is so expensive.
I just use a clothes airer and it takes ages.

AdmiralJaneway · 19/02/2018 17:53

I actually bought an Ebac dehumidifier in the autumn and I’m well impressed - as others have said - it’s not a miracle worker, I.e. don’t expect washing to be dry in an hour.

But instead of leaving it up for days - I can confidently take it down 24 hours later (at most) and the amount of water it collects is phenomenal.

However, it may have contributed to the flowers falling off my orchid!! Although they may have been due as it flowered over the spring/summer.

Despite that I would definitely recommend a dehumidifier

Punkatheart · 19/02/2018 18:27

Yes I own a dehumidifier and two mini ones - but investment I have made....it also helps my damp old cottage. I love drying clothes outside but we seem to have had rain for months now!

Yes I do and have for over 20 years on my third one, and Ebac a D' longhi and now a Meaco. . I have not used a tumble drier for that same time. Have a small box room 1.25mx2 metres and I have a sort of towel storage a clothes rail and 2 drying racks. My wet laundry from end of October to Easter, or anytime it is raining, gets hung in this room. My husbands shirts dry in about 1 hour and don't need pressing, it is brilliant, I rarely have to iron, and I don't use conventional conditioners either, i do occasionally use a post wash disinfectant such as Dettol on the kids smelly sports kit which makes the clothes smell glorious. I have hardly any condensation in the house, and I think it is a low cost way of drying clothes. Plus moist air costs more to heat, so i think it actually saves money in heating costs and reduces mould, especially in modern highly sealed homes. I can't recommend a dehumidifier enough, (I am puzzled by "humidifiers" sold in the uk, though) good dehumidifiers are clever and will not dry you home too much you have great control and can set the % of humidity to perfection.

We have a dehumidifier which we use when drying clothes. We use it in a closed room and it really makes a difference in improving the humidity in the house and drying clothes quickly. My tip is to use a big tower airer - mine has 4 tiers and it says it can take 4 loads, but I find it best to spread out one load on it so there's plenty of space for air to circulate.

DonaldWeasley · 19/02/2018 19:11

We have a dehumidifier and a wall mounted sorer, it dries everything very quickly, especially if we put the dehumidifier under the airer so the heat from the fan helps as well as the dehumidifying action

DuskPanda · 19/02/2018 19:13

Non-tester - no don't own a dehumidifier- hadn't really thought it could be used to make drying clothes indoors quicker thought was only for use with a damp room but of course makes perfect sense!
Have a tumble drier which I use all year round for towels. Any opportunity for outside line drying I put the clothes out, if not then I have quite a large horizontal dryer which i put in the spare room.

I don't own a dehumidifier - I tumble until nearly dry, then hang it indoors.

MrsRobert · 19/02/2018 19:14

Non tester: I can't dry most of my clothes in a tumble dryer and they won't dry outside in the winter so if I do have the towels/bedding/baby clothes in thr tumble dryer the room gets warm so I stick my clothes on the airer. I close the door and have the dehumidifier on.

asuwere · 19/02/2018 20:01

Non tester: I don't own a dehumidifier. I hang out washing outside as much as possible (even in winter), when not possible, I hang it on an airer near a radiator - everything is dry within 24hrs when the next load needs put up (might be dry before that but I don't check it till then!)

sharond101 · 19/02/2018 20:32

I love my tumble dryer but never thought of or considered a dehumdifier. Going to look into it right now.

cannotmakemymindup · 19/02/2018 21:06

Non-tester. We own a dehumidifier already, just a compact electric one, which runs every night and extra during the day when required. Helps with drying laundry and keeping house so much drier. We used to have big problems with condensation.
Recommend a clothes horse still near a radiator. Also recommend an extra spin on clothes from washing machine before you hang them up. Saves drying time.

Oh and in spring - summer time we use the water from our dehumidifier to water the garden. Saves costs that way plus extra eco on waste.

sealight123 · 19/02/2018 21:10

I wish I had a dehumidifier!
My dryer has just gone kaput so I've gone back to the good old fashioned clothes horse.
The only thing I've had to do is get a really good laundry schedule. Too much and there is not enough space to hang the washing. Not enough and your scrambling for a pair of pants lol

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2018 21:12

non tester - how much does it cost to run?

user1495997773 · 19/02/2018 21:22

Non tester here, but I do own and use a Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier and find it vital for helping to dry washing at this time of year. Everything except very heavy items like jeans are dry within 24 hours. I keep it on my landing so it 'works' on both upstairs and downstairs air. It seems to make the house feel warmer too. With no tumble drier and a husband and 2 children, I find it essential!

Fletch80 · 19/02/2018 21:41

I normally hang clothes outside in dry weather, over an airer in wet weather. I've never even thought about getting a dehumidifier but would definitely consider buying one after reading the reviewers' comments here.

MrsJoshDun · 19/02/2018 22:07

Non tester. My meaco dehumidifier has stopped working after a few years so I need a new one. Will look at this. Have had an eBac one before which lasted longer than the meaco one.
