This is the feedback thread for the 20 Mumsnetters who have been testing the new Monqi Android smartphone, specifically developed for children.

Monqi is a brand new mobile phone for kids which will launch on October 1st on Pay As You Go and on a monthly contract.

Here’s what Monqi had to say: “When should I buy my child a mobile phone? How do I keep them safe online? What about the costs? And what games are appropriate? Monqi is the revolutionary new mobile for kids which addresses parental concerns while giving children a phone they want. Monqi, Stay Close.”

Testers, please answer the following questions:

1. How old is the child who tested the phone? What do you think is an ideal age for a Monqi phone?
2. Were you able to easily access support to help set up your Monqi device and parent App?
3. Did it reduce any of your safety concerns in regards to your child having a mobile phone around the following areas:
a) Internet security & access to inappropriate content
b) Cyber Bullying
c) Game usage
d) App downloading/spending
e) Location tracking
4. Were there any features you particularly liked and/or didn’t like? Why did/ didn’t you like them?
5. Is there anything you would change about this product? If so, what?
6. Would you recommend the Monqi smartphone to other parents who have safety concerns around their child’s first smartphone?

All who give their required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Testers, please answer the following questions:

  1. How old is the child who tested the phone? What do you think is an ideal age for a Monqi phone?

My DD is 9. I think the ideal age would be 11.

  1. Were you able to easily access support to help set up your Monqi device and parent App?

Not needed for set up but I needed to contact Monqui re a problem which was sorted very quickly.

  1. Did it reduce any of your safety concerns in regards to your child having a mobile phone around the following areas:

a) Internet security & access to inappropriate content
Yes

b) Cyber Bullying
Yes

c) Game usage
Yes

d) App downloading/spending
Yes

e) Location tracking
Yes - although it showed my DD as being in the next street so not sure how accurate it is.

  1. Were there any features you particularly liked and/or didn’t like? Why did/ didn’t you like them?

I think the whole idea is great. It gives parents peace of mind. The texts didn't show in the normal area on my phone I had to access the monqui app to read them or know they were there.

  1. Is there anything you would change about this product? If so, what?

Other than 999 I would ensure that no other calls could be made without the number being authorised by the parent.

  1. Would you recommend the Monqi smartphone to other parents who have safety concerns around their child’s first smartphone?

Yes

So sorry to be feeding back late.

My 10 year old had been trialling this phone and I have to say I think it is excellent.

We have a 13 year old with an iPhone and trying to get her off it and to monitor usage is really difficult.

I love how we can change the settings to allow a certain time on different apps and can turn it off completely when time is up!

Sadly, our monqi phone has died (after being dropped on a wooden floor by me Sad).

We really liked the safety and control aspects of the phone and would like another one if at all possible.

I thought I'd be a little cheeky Blushand see if anyone has a monqi tester phone that they no longer want / use, as I really don't feel ready for my 10 year old to have free rein on a 'normal' yet 😬. Happy to pay for it.

Notice for all Monqi testers, they have cut our phone off with no warning. I contacted Monqi, the reply is that they are ending the beta testers and would be contacting everyone. Still haven’t heard anything.! Apparently ours was cut off early!

They say you can’t port the number as it was a test one.

Will not be taking out another one with them, they have ended this trial really badly. Disgraceful to leave my child with no way to phone me, it really upset them.
