This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who tested a mattress from the the Hilary Devey Collection

More info and details here: www.hilarydeveycollection.co.uk/ - either a Diamond or Diamond Luxe Mattress have been put to the test!

Non testers, to be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice, please answer the following question: What are your best tips for ensuring a good night's sleep?

Here’s what Duvalay have to say “With over a third of our lives spent sleeping, picking the right mattress is an important factor in making sure you get a good night’s sleep. In an era of mass-production, turning to a handcrafted mattress can be a way of ensuring you don’t suffer from aches and pains after an uncomfortable night’s sleep. Combining traditional handcrafted bed-making techniques with the finest raw materials and innovation, the Hilary Devey Collection is a premium range of hand-made mattresses. Each one is produced from Duvalay’s new Yorkshire factory, which the company moved into a year ago, quadrupling floor space to keep up for the demand for Duvalay products. With Hilary (ex Dragons Den) at the forefront of the design of the collection, personally selecting key features and materials, the collection brings a fresh take to a male-dominated industry by providing affordable luxury with a glamorous edge”.

“The Diamond is a supreme quality mattress that features 2000 individually nested pocket springs. With a summer and winter side, it provides you with a good night’s sleep all year round thanks to its cotton side for summer, which wicks moisture away and a wool side for winter that provides a snug-like effect - furthermore it has been Tried and Tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

The Diamond-Luxe takes all the best elements of the Diamond mattress, including luxurious materials and hand side-stitched borders, and features a range of new elements that further add to its glamorous take on the perfect night’s sleep. It’s also one of the first mattresses to the UK market that offers both an ingenious new pocket spring called MidasTouch and a revolutionary new filling called Wooltec®. MidasTouch is a unique spring system that has been specially designed to offer initial softness but also provides much needed support once weight has been applied. Each spring is encased in its own fabric pocket, to actively reduce partner disturbance for a relaxing night’s sleep.
The Wooltec® filling is produced using one of nature’s finest materials, lambswool, and uses the latest is modern manufacturing techniques to create vertically bonded fibres, which allows air to circulate much more easily for greater temperature control. The specially bonded fibres also increase durability and comfort.

Testers, please answer the following questions:

First impressions - please share these - on delivery, comfort on first night, look on your existing bed frame, feel of the mattress cover - do share a photo on the thread if you can. We will add more questions to this thread later on.

Second batch of questions - to reflect on your reasons for taking part and your initial views of the new mattress.

Which mattress and bed size did you choose?
What is important to you when decided on a new mattress?
How important is it to have natural fillings inside your mattress?
How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?
On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?
So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?
Does Hilary Devey’s endorsement and influence on the collection have any impact on your perception of the collection?

Third lot of questions - now that you’ve had four weeks use of your mattress, we’d like you to answer a few more questions.

Are you finding your bed comfortable?
Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner?
So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed?
Before having a Hilary Devey bed, did you know the features a handmade mattress offered? Are you now able to tell a difference?
Did you read the care instructions and are you happy with the guarantee given?

Now that you’ve had a little bit longer, please finish your testing with us by answering the following:

~ Are you still as satisfied with your bed (if applicable) as you were at the beginning of your journey with Duavay?
~ Have you found that the handmade finishes to your bed have made a difference to the quality of your sleep?
~ If you were to buy a bed again in the future, would you purchase handmade over mass produce?
~ If you were to buy a bed again in the future, would you consider buying a Duvalay mattress?
~ Do you think your Hilary Devey bed is value for money?
~ How important is it to have a summer and winter side to your mattress to keep you warm & cool in both season? Please number 1-10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.
~ Would you recommend the brand to your family and friends?

Tweet your review to @DeveybyDuvalay - include @mumsnetinsight

No tv or screens for 1 hour before bedtime. I find the best nights sleep follows a 'Bedtime story' from Mum or Dad

chrissy53438 · 23/07/2017 14:27

Ear plugs... to block out the snoring of my DOH.

milsybub · 23/07/2017 15:10

NON TESTER

If you're lying in bed and wide awake, don't force it! Do something else until you feel even just a tiny bit sleepier - but make sure it isn't too active or requires too much focus!
You don't even have to get up, just read, or play a mindless game on your phone.

Rosehips · 23/07/2017 15:19

Not having children! or if it's too late go to bed when the kids do

gd2011 · 23/07/2017 15:27

Non-tester. Dark room, shower before bedtime, change sheets often.

Have a notepad by the bed, so instead of spending all night thinking 'must remember to do so and so first thing' - whether that's getting something out of the freezer, ironing something, putting something in a lunchbox, or more important work stuff. you can just jot it down, and sleep sweetly knowing you'll see it in the morning!

Sounds daft, but it works for me!

mo3733 · 23/07/2017 16:11

i find avoiding over stimulation by computers etc at least anhour before bed and then a relaxing bubble bath straight before all aid a restful sleep

I would say to stress the importance of limiting light sources (including blue light) to encourage the natural production of melatonin. I also find a comfortable temperature and a clean, uncluttered room helps me nod off quicker!

I work shifts so getting a good day or nights sleep is pretty reliant upon my black out blinds and trying to limit noise as much as possible.

finleypop · 23/07/2017 16:47

Never try to sleep in an untidy or cluttered room

Mum2mischiefs · 23/07/2017 16:50

I'd say a clean bed and body and as clear a mind as you can muster. I always like to have a bath before bed and try and stick to a routine as far as possible to help me get off to sleep. I don't like to go to bed too early but I think the old adage 'an hour before midnight is worth two after' has some truth to it.

In recent months, I've found that just picking up my kindle in bed sends me off to sleep almost instantaneously!

alsproject · 23/07/2017 16:51

Make sure the room is cool so it is still comfortable as this helps you to sleep easier

Rachdayan · 23/07/2017 17:04

Non Tester: I once stayed in a hotel that provided lavender pillow spray by the side of the bed. I tried and and loved it. It really relaxes the senses. I now have my own bottle next to the bed and spray it on my pillow every night just before I lay my head down.

What are your best tips for ensuring a good nights sleep?

Making the bedroom at technology free zone.

feefeegabor · 23/07/2017 18:32

I always turn off my phone and go up to bed to read for half an hour before attempting sleep, to let my brain slow down.

For a blissful night sleep, run round tidying up after your kids all day, you'll be absolutely knackered

Ikea1234 · 23/07/2017 18:46

The biggest difference I have just made to my sleep pattern is I have gone caffeine free. I don't drink coffee, only tea, (and only 1-2 cups a day) but now I only drink caffeine free tea. It has made a HUGE difference! I Sleep soundly every night, and I never wake at night, whereas I used to regularly. I feel better during the day too - much more rested and refreshed. Try it!

i find having a nice warm bath and not having any caffeine for a couple of hours before bed really helps, get yourself some decent blackout blinds or lined curtains so the room is dark and cool and also turn off your mobile before you go up to bed so you aren't tempted to scroll through social media

thesockgap · 23/07/2017 19:48

My absolute musts for a good night's sleep:
Window open (or fan on if an open window is going to cause too much noise); light bedding; complete darkness; no going on tablet immediately before bed; mindful breathing.

helly27 · 23/07/2017 20:26

Have down time from technology first

mave · 23/07/2017 20:34

Don't drink caffeine after 5! Read a good book, black out curtains and a cool room!

Ensure the bedroom is the advised temperature.
Black out window dressing.
Change the bed about every eight years for optimum comfort.
Summer tog rating & winter tog rating duvets.
Cotton bedding, & brushed cotton for the winter.
No techy stuff in the bedroom, & don't use any for at least an hour or so before bedtime.
Keep to the same time routine for bedtime & rising.
No late evening caffeine, or meals.

MakeTeaNotWar · 23/07/2017 20:56

Non tester - earplugs to drown out DH's snoring and mutterings & an eye mask for those bright summer mornings. Being anxious about work can also keep me awake so I try to prepare as best I can by having clothes at the ready and a list of tasks to tackle

twinklenic · 23/07/2017 21:03

make sure you limit your usage of tech before bed , i always find this helpful

NotTodayDear · 23/07/2017 21:18

Non-tester here - best ways to get a good night's sleep are to have a good routine for sleep/wake times and not drift too far from it at holidays/weekends, and to sleep in a cool room with the window open. Oh, and read rather than go on the internet just before sleep.
