This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who tested a mattress from the the Hilary Devey Collection

More info and details here: www.hilarydeveycollection.co.uk/ - either a Diamond or Diamond Luxe Mattress have been put to the test!

Non testers, to be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice, please answer the following question: What are your best tips for ensuring a good night's sleep?

Here’s what Duvalay have to say “With over a third of our lives spent sleeping, picking the right mattress is an important factor in making sure you get a good night’s sleep. In an era of mass-production, turning to a handcrafted mattress can be a way of ensuring you don’t suffer from aches and pains after an uncomfortable night’s sleep. Combining traditional handcrafted bed-making techniques with the finest raw materials and innovation, the Hilary Devey Collection is a premium range of hand-made mattresses. Each one is produced from Duvalay’s new Yorkshire factory, which the company moved into a year ago, quadrupling floor space to keep up for the demand for Duvalay products. With Hilary (ex Dragons Den) at the forefront of the design of the collection, personally selecting key features and materials, the collection brings a fresh take to a male-dominated industry by providing affordable luxury with a glamorous edge”.

“The Diamond is a supreme quality mattress that features 2000 individually nested pocket springs. With a summer and winter side, it provides you with a good night’s sleep all year round thanks to its cotton side for summer, which wicks moisture away and a wool side for winter that provides a snug-like effect - furthermore it has been Tried and Tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

The Diamond-Luxe takes all the best elements of the Diamond mattress, including luxurious materials and hand side-stitched borders, and features a range of new elements that further add to its glamorous take on the perfect night’s sleep. It’s also one of the first mattresses to the UK market that offers both an ingenious new pocket spring called MidasTouch and a revolutionary new filling called Wooltec®. MidasTouch is a unique spring system that has been specially designed to offer initial softness but also provides much needed support once weight has been applied. Each spring is encased in its own fabric pocket, to actively reduce partner disturbance for a relaxing night’s sleep.
The Wooltec® filling is produced using one of nature’s finest materials, lambswool, and uses the latest is modern manufacturing techniques to create vertically bonded fibres, which allows air to circulate much more easily for greater temperature control. The specially bonded fibres also increase durability and comfort.

How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?
On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?
So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?

Third lot of questions - now that you’ve had four weeks use of your mattress, we’d like you to answer a few more questions.

Are you finding your bed comfortable?
Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner?
So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed?

Non tester: What are your best tips for ensuring a good night's sleep?

not having DC2 (DC2 is aged 4, we've had less then 10 full nights sleep, I'm broken)

When I'm allowed to sleep by small children, I am capable of sleeping with any shitty matress/hot or cold room/draft/scratchy bedding...

Hopezibah · 27/08/2017 11:47

non-tester: Don't underestimate the power of a calming warm drink before bed - sounds totally cliche but camomile tea works a treat and just taking those few moments to relax and do sometihng for yourself can help you wind down.

We also try to take a break from gadgets / phones / screens immediately before bed too.
And keeping our bedroom clear from clutter helps it be a relaxing place to sleep.

HattietheManatee · 29/08/2017 12:16

Non-tester here.
Best tips for a good night's sleep:
Never have children.
Never have three children.

I also have a no life planning rule after 9pm as it makes my head spin.
If I'm really struggling I use a mindfulness app.

HalimaB · 29/08/2017 12:28

NON TESTER - Clean sheets and a comfy mattress do help i agree. Also get the kids sleeping in their own bed in another room

Switch of tv and phone for at least an hour before bed to unwind. And don't drink too much tea before bed!

Are you finding your bed comfortable?

Absolutely. I love getting into it and hate getting out of it!

Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner?

Definitely so, although it's harder to get out of in the morning for an early gym shift!

So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed?

I love turning it down every morning to air and being able to see the plushness of the finish through the bottom sheet!

Before having a Hilary Devey bed, did you know the features a handmade mattress offered?

No, but I would have assumed that handmade would come at a premium price tag, but not sure what actual benefits it would bring.

Are you now able to tell a difference?

I think so? It's so super high and lofty, and just looks the part!

Did you read the care instructions and are you happy with the guarantee given?

DH joked that the instructions were like a care guide for a Mogwai. The guarantee seems very reasonable and well explained.

My tips for a good nights sleeps are
A good quality mattress and good pillows are a must.
Clean, cotton bed linen
A silk pillow case
A feather filled duvet
A squirt of It Works pillow spray
A well ventilated room
and finally….
Doze off listening to my dog snoring at the end of the bed!

imablackstarnotapopstar · 31/08/2017 10:50

Non tester - to ensure a good night's sleep - a quality mattress, smooth high thread count bedding, an open window, no TV or other electrical items, my Himalayan rock salt lamp and my cat! ❤️

AmberNectarine · 01/09/2017 09:04

Sorry, been on hols!

Are you finding your bed comfortable?

Oh yes, very!

Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner?

Yes, we were just discussing this as, having been away, we were even more excited than usual to get back to our own bed! We're both being disturbed significantly less by each other's movements.

So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed?

So pleased, the quality seems really excellent so far and I love the additional height - feels so luxurious!

Before having a Hilary Devey bed, did you know the features a handmade mattress offered?

No, I didn't.

Are you now able to tell a difference?

It does feel of a higher quality and the different sides for the temperature is just inspired.

Did you read the care instructions and are you happy with the guarantee given?

I did and now need to turn the mattress! Very happy with the guarantee also.

Don't eat after 9pm

Use a guided meditation app

Backhometothenorth · 04/09/2017 10:49

Very lucky tester reporting back! Thanks again for the chance to test this top-notch mattress.

Are you finding your bed comfortable? Exceptionally so- the weather has been changeable but we are so comfortable both when it is very hot or a little chilly. I love a firm but comfortable mattress and this is just perfect for us.
Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner? Definitely. Much less movement transferred.
So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed? It is a thing of beauty as I think I have said before- shame to cover it with bedsheets!
Before having a Hilary Devey bed, did you know the features a handmade mattress offered? Are you now able to tell a difference? I'm afraid I didn't know but my eyes have been opened and I can tell the difference with the other beds in the house.
Did you read the care instructions and are you happy with the guarantee given?yes I did. The guarantee seems very reasonable.

Mattresstestermax · 04/09/2017 11:10

Are you finding your bed comfortable?
Yes! Had to sleep in another bed recently and was very uncomfortable!

Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner?
Yes, we don't disturb each other at all.

So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed?
I am very pleased with the quality, and I've got used to the slightly higher mattress look. I do think it looks a little more imposing than my old mattress, I don't love it but am prepared to put up with it for the better quality.

Before having a Hilary Devey bed, did you know the features a handmade mattress offered?
I would have assumed that it meant better quality but wouldn't have been able to say how exactly!

Are you now able to tell a difference?
It is very comfortable, but how do you tell what is materials and what is manufacturing process? I suspect that the high spring count is key, and this is probably to do with manufacturing.

Did you read the care instructions and are you happy with the guarantee given?
We are complying with the care instructions but its a big fat faff and I'm looking forward to the endless flipping and turning being over!
The guarantee seems very reasonable, but I do wonder about the phrase "inappropriate use", and how that would be judged! I hope never to have to claim on it!

Tentomidnight · 04/09/2017 15:46

Are you finding your bed comfortable?
Yes! I actually look forward to going to bed now

Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner?
I'm not sure, as we both suffer from disturbed sleep at times. It is certainly a very comfortable place to be if I do wake in the night though!

So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed?
Yes, very. The mattress looks and feels to be of a very high quality, and feels like it will retain its shape for years.

Before having a Hilary Devey bed, did you know the features a handmade mattress offered?
Not really. I considered it a luxury though.

Are you now able to tell a difference?
I think so, yes. The materials seem very luxurious, and the stitching is substantial. It lools and feels vastly better than my old mattress.

Did you read the care instructions and are you happy with the guarantee given?
Yes, though I am a bit confused about the summer/winter sides of the mattress, as mine looks the same each side. I will take care to turn and air the mattress as suggested. I haven't noted the guarantee, but don't anticipate any issues.

Thank you again for letting me test this amazing mattress Smile

MattressKing · 04/09/2017 22:37

Tester

Are you finding your bed comfortable?

Absolutely. It's fab. As it's holiday time we've been sleeping here, there and everywhere - in cottages, a hotel and at my inlaws and none of the other beds I have slept in can compare.

Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner?

Yes, I think it probably has.

So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed?

I can't fault it tbh. I love the depth of the mattress and, while you can't see the quality of the finish when it's covered in bedding, there is something nice about knowing how sumptuous it looks underneath. Like wearing pretty underwear I suppose - not many people see it but it makes you feel good!

Before having a Hilary Devey bed, did you know the features a handmade mattress offered? Are you now able to tell a difference?

No, I hadn't given it much thought but would do if I was buying now. I hope I would be able to tell the difference.

Did you read the care instructions and are you happy with the guarantee given?

Yes, we have adhered to all the "flipping" instructions! However, it was due a turn tonight but I've put it off until tomorrow. It is a faff and a definite 2 person job.

The guarantee is quite specific and depends on the length of time you've had the mattress. It seems reasonable enough but I don't suppose you ever know how well it will be dealt with until you need to make a claim, as it were.

-Avoiding screen time up to an half an hour before (reading).

A nice relaxing bath beforehand, big fluffy pillows and fresh sheets always helps me get to sleep!

Anj123 · 10/09/2017 21:50

Non tester. I like to have the window open even in winter, and like to have a warm shower or bath before bedtime.

To ensure a good night sleep I try to shut down so to speak in the evening, for the last 30 minutes turn off the telly, have a warm cuppa and just relax.
I also try and go to bed every night around the same time, I find consistency really helps to create a healthy sleeping pattern.
A good walk after tea is also great as it tires me out and it gets the dog out the house again !

Testers - now that you’ve had a little bit longer, please finish your testing with us by answering the following:

~ Are you still as satisfied with your bed (if applicable) as you were at the beginning of your journey with Duavay? Oh yes!

~ Have you found that the handmade finishes to your bed have made a difference to the quality of your sleep? Obviously it's hard to narrow it down to the handmade finisbes, but the mattress overall has definitely improved my quality of sleep.

~ If you were to buy a bed again in the future, would you purchase handmade over mass produce? If at all possible financially then yes

~ If you were to buy a bed again in the future, would you consider buying a Duvalay mattress? As above! Very pricey compared to my normal standards, but also far far better than them!

~ Do you think your Hilary Devey bed is value for money? The materials and finish are excellent so yes

~ How important is it to have a summer and winter side to your mattress to keep you warm & cool in both season? Please number 1-10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. 6 - not something I would look for particularly but a nice feature to have

  • would you recommend? Yes, I already have!

The mattresses look fantastic! We'll definitely bear them in mind when we next replace ours.

My top tip is plenty of fresh air in the room, and as dark and calm as it's possible to get it with small children in the house!

SleepingSoundly · 12/09/2017 07:01

~ Are you still as satisfied with your bed (if applicable) as you were at the beginning of your journey with Duavay?
Yes, if anything more so.
~ Have you found that the handmade finishes to your bed have made a difference to the quality of your sleep?
This isn't totally straightforward to answer: sleep quality is improved, but how much the hand-finishedness contributes is difficult to say.
~ If you were to buy a bed again in the future, would you purchase handmade over mass produce?
I would consider it yes.
~ If you were to buy a bed again in the future, would you consider buying a Duvalay mattress?
Yes, definitely. I would quite likely buy the same Hilary Devey mattress again given that we now know how well we get on with it.
~ Do you think your Hilary Devey bed is value for money?
Although expensive, I would say that it is value for money, especially when you consider how much of your life is spent asleep.
~ How important is it to have a summer and winter side to your mattress to keep you warm & cool in both season? Please number 1-10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.
All the testing period has been in hotter summer weather and it has been noticeable that the mattress has felt cooler summer side up than winter, so yes, although initially rather sceptical of this feature, I would now rate it as quite important: around a 7-8/10.
~ Would you recommend the brand to your family and friends?
Yes.

manfalou · 12/09/2017 10:16

Non-Tester.

My tips for getting a good night sleep:

-Buy a black out blind to get the room as dark as possible
-Comfy pillows is a Must.
-Make sure your duvet is the right one for the season. You don't want a huge 15tog duvet in the summer.
-A nice cup of tea before bed and no tech for the hour before.
