This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who tested a mattress from the the Hilary Devey Collection

More info and details here: www.hilarydeveycollection.co.uk/ - either a Diamond or Diamond Luxe Mattress have been put to the test!

Non testers, to be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice, please answer the following question: What are your best tips for ensuring a good night's sleep?

Here’s what Duvalay have to say “With over a third of our lives spent sleeping, picking the right mattress is an important factor in making sure you get a good night’s sleep. In an era of mass-production, turning to a handcrafted mattress can be a way of ensuring you don’t suffer from aches and pains after an uncomfortable night’s sleep. Combining traditional handcrafted bed-making techniques with the finest raw materials and innovation, the Hilary Devey Collection is a premium range of hand-made mattresses. Each one is produced from Duvalay’s new Yorkshire factory, which the company moved into a year ago, quadrupling floor space to keep up for the demand for Duvalay products. With Hilary (ex Dragons Den) at the forefront of the design of the collection, personally selecting key features and materials, the collection brings a fresh take to a male-dominated industry by providing affordable luxury with a glamorous edge”.

“The Diamond is a supreme quality mattress that features 2000 individually nested pocket springs. With a summer and winter side, it provides you with a good night’s sleep all year round thanks to its cotton side for summer, which wicks moisture away and a wool side for winter that provides a snug-like effect - furthermore it has been Tried and Tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

The Diamond-Luxe takes all the best elements of the Diamond mattress, including luxurious materials and hand side-stitched borders, and features a range of new elements that further add to its glamorous take on the perfect night’s sleep. It’s also one of the first mattresses to the UK market that offers both an ingenious new pocket spring called MidasTouch and a revolutionary new filling called Wooltec®. MidasTouch is a unique spring system that has been specially designed to offer initial softness but also provides much needed support once weight has been applied. Each spring is encased in its own fabric pocket, to actively reduce partner disturbance for a relaxing night’s sleep.
The Wooltec® filling is produced using one of nature’s finest materials, lambswool, and uses the latest is modern manufacturing techniques to create vertically bonded fibres, which allows air to circulate much more easily for greater temperature control. The specially bonded fibres also increase durability and comfort.

Non tester - for a guaranteed good night of sleep, a bath before bed with relaxing oils and pillow misted with sleepy spray (the This Works one is great), and a slightly open window.

Hairq · 04/08/2017 13:19

My best tips for a good night sleep are to have clean sheets regularly and always sleep with the window open even when it's cold outside. It really helps.

Air the room, by opening windows in evening.
Lavender oil sprinkled on pillows.

a cool room clean sheets and a relaxing bath before bed means a lovely sleep for me and some times a cup of hot milk

My best tip is don't have children Grin but, barring that, a cool room, warm duvet, no eating an hour+ before bed, and no mumsnetting in bed either!

A good firm mattress is a definite for comfort, for me at least, together with crisp, cool sheets and a squishy pillow! :)

goldenretriever1978 · 06/08/2017 21:35

Non tester: Sleep alone in a cool dark room with a lavender scent nearby.

A cool, dark room, and good quality bedding!

A good mattress should last 10 years, so try to buy a good quality one, think of it as a long term investment. Even though it might be really expensive, if you spread the cost over 10 years, it doesn't seem as big.

I chose a king size diamond luxe.

Comfort, affordability and delivery timescale are all important factors to me when choosing a new mattress.

Natural fillings are essential for cool, comfortable sleep. I get too hot on artificial fillings.

British is best for me, keeping skills in the U.K., providing quality employment and reducing transport miles are all very important to me.

First impressions are great, the diamond luxe is a wonderfully comfortable, supportive mattress that oozes quality. For me it is perfect as it it.

The diamond luxe is a heavy, substantial mattress that has improved my sleep immensely from day one. It's cool to sleep on, suitably soft, but not over so and no more rolling into the middle when dh, ( who is larger than me) rolls over.

Hilary Devey's endorsement attracted me to the product initially as I regonised her from Dragon's Den. She is a shrewd business women so I felt it was worth taking notice of. However some people may be put off by her.

KatoPotato · 08/08/2017 16:48

Which mattress and bed size did you choose?

The Diamond Luxe in Double size

What is important to you when decided on a new mattress?

Has to be a sprung mattress with support yet soft.

How important is it to have natural fillings inside your mattress?

Extremely. I’ve slept on a Memory Foam matress before, and found it to be a sweaty horrible experience!

How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?

I absolutely support manufacturing in Britain, to keep manufacturing alive, to encourage a future workforce and of course to reduce the miles the mattress has had to travel to get to me! – makes it feel ‘fresher’ if that makes any sense!

On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?

I’m still a bit confused about this winter/summer side proposition. There’s no visual difference to either side, and no labelling? I have been a tad warm some nights but unsure if that’s just me or the weather!

So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?

Yes, there’s absolutely no ‘roll together’ and it is beyond comfortable. Soft but supportive.

Does Hilary Devey’s endorsement and influence on the collection have any impact on your perception of the collection?

It does. I remember reading about her in Grazia years ago about how she sold her car to start her business, which she did to help her son with his addiction problems.

Second batch of questions for testers - to reflect on your reasons for taking part and your initial views of the new mattress.

Which mattress and bed size did you choose?
Diamond deluxe double

What is important to you when decided on a new mattress?
Comfort! I also like good support.

How important is it to have natural fillings inside your mattress?
I always prefer natural products where possible, I think it's really important.

How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?
I work in British manufacturing so know how important it is to support it!
You can really see the quality of the manufacturing too.

On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?
Can't think of anything. I love it!

So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?
In general I have been sleeping better, and when I am awake during the night at least I'm comfortable and my tossing and turning doesn't bother my DH so much anymore!

Does Hilary Devey’s endorsement and influence on the collection have any impact on your perception of the collection?
I'm generally wary of celebrity endorsements and try to ignore them wherever possible! Although her name rang a bell it wasn't until we saw her picture on the leaflet that I recognised her - I would say it had little to no impact on me.

SleepingSoundly · 09/08/2017 06:44

Which mattress and bed size did you choose?
The Diamond (firmer), Kingsize.

What is important to you when decided on a new mattress?
I want a mattress that will give both of us a comfortable, hotel quality sleep, that will last well and be a pleasure to use.

How important is it to have natural fillings inside your mattress?
I rate comfort as higher importance than natural fillings, but, as in my experience natural fillings are more comfortable than synthetic ones, the two merge somewhat, and having natural fillings becomes an important criteria.

How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?
I always like to support British (and local) industries where possible, both to boost the economy and for ecological reasons. However, I wouldn't want to buy an inferior product to do so.

On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?
I am finding turning the mattress each week at the moment (as per the care instructions) is quite a chore.

So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?
Yes I do, it's very much more comfortable than my previous mattress and feels very supportive as well.

Does Hilary Devey’s endorsement and influence on the collection have any impact on your perception of the collection?
As a good business woman I imagine the collection will be well marketed so awareness of it might be higher than otherwise and also someone in her position is unlikely to want to be associated with a rubbish product.

Tentomidnight · 09/08/2017 11:18

Which mattress and bed size did you choose?
Double diamond luxe, to fit my existing bed frame

What is important to you when decided on a new mattress?
Comfort is #1 priority, then budget.

How important is it to have natural fillings inside your mattress?
I would rather have natural fillings to allow the mattress to breathe. I read that the average adult sweats over a litre of water per night, is that true? [vom]

How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?
Not particularly in the past, but having thought about it, quite important, for quality, environmental and economic reasons.

On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?
No. I was bowled over by the customer service and the quality of the mattress when it arrived.

So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?
I'm an insomniac atm, and whilst the mattress can't help with the underlying(!) reasons, it is certainly a very comfirtable place to lie awake!

Does Hilary Devey’s endorsement and influence on the collection have any impact on your perception of the collection?
No. I don't like celebrity endorsements, but the fact that HD is a successful entrepeneur rather than a vacuous celebrity is a positive.

AmberNectarine · 09/08/2017 11:38

Which mattress and bed size did you choose?
The Double Diamond Luxe

What is important to you when decided on a new mattress?
Firmness and Comfort

How important is it to have natural fillings inside your mattress?
It's definitely preferable - DH is a bit of a sweaty sleeper!

How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?
It wouldn't be a deal breaker, but it's certainly a 'nice to have'. Good to promote British manufacturing and environmental impact reduced.

On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?
Honestly, no. I am so in love with this mattress!

So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?
It already has. The cool cotton side has made the warmer nights so much more tolerable and the fact I can't feel DH flailing around so much is helping no end. I haven't even been waking when he gets up in the morning (he leaves 2h before me). My back and hip pain has subsided massively too. I cannot praise this mattress enough!

Does Hilary Devey’s endorsement and influence on the collection have any impact on your perception of the collection?
Not to me, because I don't watch Dragons Den and,as such, I had no idea who she was. However she must have really believed in the product to put her name to it and I can totally see why she did!

Thank you so much MN and Duvalay for the opportunity. I am just over the moon with this mattress. We're also about to replace our bed and this has given me full justification to go for something much more ££ than we otherwise would have as we've got a cracking new mattress!

AmberNectarine · 09/08/2017 11:40

Don't think I've ever read such a glowing set of reviews on a product test Smile

I chose the Diamond Luxe mattress, king size.

The overwhelming priority for us is support for our backs as we have both had issues during the last 15 years. Although we had had some success with a memory foam mattress, we found it very hot. We also need something that can accommodate our differing comfort requirements - partner wants firm mattress, I would prefer softer.

The natural materials was important to us, we both wear natural fibres as preference, along with cotton bedding. This was a downside of our memory foam mattress and we have found this one offers a more temperate climate!

I love the fact that it is made in Britain, the quality is superb, and reduced manufacturing miles is important to me.

I honestly don't think that there could be any improvement with this mattress. We love it.

It has already improved the quality of our sleep. I don't wake up at night from being uncomfortably hot. We both find the mattress supportive, no back issues. Incredibly we find it works for our differing preference for a firm/soft mattress.

Generally I am wary of celebrity endorsement, as I just wonder how much they are being paid. However, I do think that Hilary has business integrity so her endorsement did not deter me. I didn't feel she would put her name to an inferior product.

What are your best tips for ensuring a good night's sleep?

I tend to read in bed before sleeping, it helps me to relax away from screens

Starlight85 · 10/08/2017 21:39

Non-Tester

Best tip for getting a good night's sleep is to have the window open so the room isn't stuffy and don't look at your phone for a while before you go to bed so you can start to unwind before you try to get to sleep

CantStandMeow · 10/08/2017 22:27

Non-Tester

Best tip for me is make sure you're comfortable. I like an open window all year round, DH likes the fresh air but not the cold. So I open the window and he has an extra blanket. Both comfortable, both get a good night's sleep until the DC wake us.

serendipity1980 · 12/08/2017 14:36

Non Tester
What are your best tips for ensuring a good nights sleep?
I don't have screen time for at least half an hour before bed, clean sheets, blackout curtains, have a window open in summer, always use electric blanket if I'm feeling cold. Also, I always read a bit before I go to sleep to switch off from daily routines. Plus, I always sleep better when my DH is around, if he's away for any reason (which isn't often) I never sleep as well.

MattressKing · 13/08/2017 21:19

Tester - I've been away so am catching up with the second set of questions. The holiday home we stayed at had memory foam mattresses, which I wasn't so keen on. I've missed my bed!

Which mattress and bed size did you choose?

We have a standard double bed and went for the Diamond (firmer) mattress.

What is important to you when decided on a new mattress?

Comfort and support and, if I'd been spending my own cash, value for money. £1000 on a mattress would be affordable to me but is at the top end of what I'd pay so would have to be a really considered purchase.

How important is it to have natural fillings inside your mattress?

Very important. I like to wear cotton in bed and sleep in cotton sheets so would extend this preference to my mattress too.

How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?

I think it is a really good selling point. I like the idea of supporting British manufacturers and feel reassured that our safety standards are some of the best in the world.

On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?

No. I've been very impressed. We are due a "flip" of the mattress this week which will mean we are sleeping on the winter side so I'll be interested to see if there is much of a difference.

So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?

I must be honest, I don't have too much trouble getting to sleep. I tell dh it's because I work so hard! But I do think I've slept better. However, to put it into context, our other mattress was 12 or 13 years old I reckon so perhaps anything new would be an improvement.

Does Hilary Devey’s endorsement and influence on the collection have any impact on your perception of the collection?

Yeah, kind of. I'm not generally impressed by celebrity endorsement but I like Hilary. Her Pall-Ex business is based in my home town of Leicester so I've followed her career and think she's really hard working and has been successful in quite a male dominated field. So a strong woman and good role model. I don't think she'd put her name to anything rubbish.
