This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters who tested LloydsPharmacy Solero sun creams.

Here’s what LloydsPharmacy has to say: “April 2016 sees the launch of our reformulated and re-packaged own brand of suncare range, Solero. We understand that our customers’ skin is as unique as they are, which is why we have introduced a range of suncream that is perfect for every type of skin – an ultra-sensitive range for skin prone to eczema (atopic dermatitis) and psoriasis, which has been dermatologically tested and approved, and a triple defence range that protects from 3 types of harmful rays, UV-A, UV-B and Infrared-A”

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We tested the Solero Kids Sun Spray and Solero Factor 30 Moisturising Sun Lotion at home playing in the garden over the weekend - very warm weather.
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I usually use Nivea unscented sun cream for children and adults. The Solero smells pleasant, and we found it rubbed in pretty well. It did leave a slightly greasy finish on the skin, but as it is water resistant, I think this is generally the case. I find sprays so much easier with children, but DS2 hates them, and this one was no different!
The Nivea we usually use is very water resistant and thicker/greasiest than the Solero, but I prefer it for its longevity.

We tested the kids one for a week at school and I tested the triple defence one daily for a week. Also used them both on a long, sunny day at Chessington.

The kids one rubbed in quite nicely and didn't show on my children's naturally olive skin. It offered good protection too.

I used the triple defence on my darker skin and found that it was not well absorbed, and left a whitish sheen on my skin. For this reason I would not buy it and I also thought that at £7, it is not as cheap as my usual branded one that I can pick up on offer for £5 and rubs in better.

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We used the suncream before going to local Playgroup last Thursday

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
The suncream was very similar to other brands we have used, My daughter wasn't so keen on the spray. I would buy again if just in a lotion form

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?

I have tested in on my youngest children, aged 5 and 7, for school and during this time they also went on a day trip to a nature reserve on an extremely sunny day.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?

I have used Boots Soltan for all the family for some time now but my 7 year old daughter has such sensitive skin that after a few days of continuous application, her face tends to break out and the older she gets, the worse this make her feel. This is why I was keen to try the Solero ultra sensitive sun spray for kids and I can honestly say I won't be using anything else now. Solero is light and absorbs easily and leaves a lovely looking shine on my children's faces (rather than looking like a ghost as they used to do!) and it has no smell. But the most important factor is that my daughter has not broke out once whilst using it and that makes it a winner.

My daughter was also able to take the 50 ml bottle into school with her and proudly told her teacher that this was her special sun cream and as a result the school are more than happy to let her apply it during the day.

I honestly can not fault the product and I will be buying it from now on. I'm not really a fan of Lloyds Pharmacy, most likely because Boots and Wilkos are more convenient for us, and usually cheaper, but I am prepared to shop there just to buy this sun cream.

In terms of the price, I think that every decent brand of sun cream is overpriced (in particular the 50sfp products), but as it is a necessity I have no choice and will pay to ensure my children at least are safely covered.

Abodago81 · 14/06/2016 18:16

I tried the kids and sensitive products.
Tried at home in Devon and at the park and at school on the few part sunny days we've had.
Last week ( early June).
I would say I prefer other sprays I've bought previously due to this being a little sticky after application BUT there was nothing wrong with it and the smell was pleasant and not too strong. If this was on a good offer eg the usual 2 for £8 rather than £7 for one then I'd buy it happily. I do prefer a spray to a lotion for the kids.
Thanks for allowing me to test.

britnay · 14/06/2016 18:53

I tried the kids and sensitive varieties

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
At home and before school. Early June, warm weather.
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
Price wise, Solero is similarly priced to the brand that I usually buy
I found that it didn't spray very well and took a while to absorb.

Due to the shape of the bottle, it became very difficult to hold when my hand was slippery due to spreading on the lotion.
I liked that it didn't have a strong fragrance.
I was disappointed to see that it only had 3 UVA protection, my regular brand is 5.

shaunying · 14/06/2016 19:27

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We used the sun cream when we were in the garden, or out at weekends.
We also used it during the week when our son was going to nursery.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I didn't notice any real difference, nice smell, and the cream rubbed in easily.

Alexandra2013 · 14/06/2016 19:41
  1. We tested both products over a week, week days as well as week end.
  2. My kids and myself liked the products. Easy to apply, effective and nice on skin. We will carry on using and will buy when running out of product.
umiaisha · 14/06/2016 21:34

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream? on a day out to the zoo last week.
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use? I thought it absorbed well and had a nice consistency. It did however leave a slight weird sticky film and didn't smell of much, although I am probably in the minority in liking a 'sun cream/holiday smell!'. I prefer my usual brand (Nivea) which I think is actually cheaper than the test product.

DillieDoily · 14/06/2016 21:41

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
I tested it on a very sunny day in the garden last week

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
It compared pretty well- went on easily, absorbed quickly and most importantly protected my children from sunburn. However I still prefer the aerosol sprays I usually buy- much faster and easier to apply to moving targets!

nikkijp83 · 14/06/2016 23:14

Thank you for choosing us to test these products :)

Answers;

  1. We tested these whilst on holiday in Majorca last week.

  2. We have always used Nivea, but we were really happy with the products we were sent. Easy to apply, only used a little amount for each application. Protected our skin from the blazing sun.
I was that happy with them, that I have already popped into our local Lloyds Pharmacy and stocked up for our next holiday!.

DontDeadOpenInside · 15/06/2016 12:06

still waiting for ours to come

MillseyC · 15/06/2016 12:21

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
I tested the sun cream at home for the last 2 weeks when it was really hot(last week and week before)

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I'm not loyal to a particular sun cream brand I tend to buy what ever I think is best at the time, usually very high factor sensitive ones as my boy has very fair sensitive skin. I really liked the solero children's spray, it was easy to apply and soaked into the skin quickly. Sounds odd but I really liked the smell! Some creams smell awful but the spray had a pleasant smell that wasn't too strong. Reminded me of coconut. My son well he went on a school trip wearing the spray and it did what it said on the tin- protected his skin in the sun and was really easy for him to apply oon his own(he's 6 and they have to apply it themselves at school). Another thing I liked about it was that it didn't stain his school clothes. He usually slaps sun cream on liberally and covers his white t.shirt - other brands have left a strange stain where this one left none 👍 I would definately buy this cream of it was reasonably priced

FlukeSkyeRunner · 15/06/2016 13:59

Q1. We tested the sun cream every day for two weeks when the weather was very hot.
Q2. It worked perfectly. Easily applied with no mess, quickly absorbed into skin and not too greasy. Very effective - it was very hot and sunny with high UV levels, and no sunburn. Very pleased - easier to apply than usual brand and equally as effective.

mmjb · 15/06/2016 14:57

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We used the sun creams at home whilst in garden and also whilst at rugby tots and whilst down at our horses field

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
We normally use one we buy from Aldi, and both the kids ultra sensitive spray and the solero triple defence faired quiet well, the kids ultra sensitive spray went on well and was absorbed by the skin quickly without leaving any residue,I found the triple defence cream at first went on well but did leave the skin greasy especially on my hands after rubbing the cream on the children which made it harder to keep hold of the bottle.
Both sun creams worked well and kept both children and myself from being sunburnt even when children were in and out of there paddling pool

The price on a whole is probably on par with other brands

AnneEyhtMeyer · 15/06/2016 18:30

I am astonished people have been able to test this properly and that some are talking about using it over a couple of weeks.

We were sent very small tester-size bottles, not even enough for a full day's use! Were we the only ones?

tinker78 · 15/06/2016 19:11

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?

At home in the garden. We've had some lovely hot sunny weather.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
The kids spray had a slight antiseptic smell to me in the bottle, but not once rubbed in. It sprayed well, had a nice not to thick not too thin consistency and rubbed in well. No irritation in mine or the kids skin, and no sticky residue.

The adults cream had a nice smell, went on well and left no residue.

I'd happily use both, but I do use the Asda own brand sun cream as it came out best with Which! a few years ago, and it very reasonably priced.

postitnotes · 15/06/2016 19:46

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
1: I used it last week at home. It was a sunny week and I was out and about every day with my 1yo and my 2yo.

2: I don't have a particular brand that I use. I tend to buy the most reasonably priced factor 50 available. I don't tend to search out suncreams for senstive skin or specifically stating for kids. These suncreams fared well - stayed on, went on well. I prefer the cream, my husband prefers the spray bottle. My 1yo has eczema and neither suncream irritated her skin, however I also have eczema and I found that the 'sensitive' one stung my skin where I had raw patches.

Deedee75 · 15/06/2016 20:07

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
Kids - my 7yo son put it on himself at home before going to school
Sensitive - I put it on my 21 mth old son when we went to the park

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
Kids - It seemed to work ok, and went on easily enough without my son having too much difficulty with the spray, but I didn't like the feeling of the sun cream left on my hands (I helped him rub it on properly), didn't feel like it soaked in properly and left them feeling a bit sticky.

Sensitive - Went on nicely, and rubbed in well, it was a nice thick cream.
Both had very little scent which is generally a good thing, and they seemed to prevent my children getting burnt. I'd prefer a cream that you don't have to apply so often though.

Tigerlily13 · 15/06/2016 21:07

We used the cream just going about our daily business, walking into town, going to the park, in the garden.
Not keen on the kids one as the star rating is only 3, whereas I don't like to use less than 5. Spray was a bit all over the place and it was a bit sticky once on but prevented sunburn.
The other had a better star rating so would be more confident buying it, and it went on nicely. But I would be unlikely to purchase as I currently pay £2.99 for Aldi which I'm very happy with so wouldn't pay more.

ChineseFireball · 15/06/2016 21:11

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
I used it on my children and me over a weekend - we were in the park and in the garden and just generally mooching about.
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
It was easy to apply and gave good coverage, and had a fairly pleasant scent. I usually use the green one from Nivea so you can see where it has been applied, but this cream was reasonably thick so you could see where it had been put on. Took a bit more rubbing in than I'd like (my 4- and 1-year-olds have considerably less patience than I'd like them to have - of course!) and left us all feeling stickier than we'd have liked. The little bottles were a good size to go in my handbag but after a couple of goes the bottles got a bit slippery and without the finger ripples in the sides of the bottles it was a bit tricky to push the pump down.
I would buy it again if I was in a tight spot but wouldn't go out of my way to get it over, for example, Nivea or a supermarket/Boots own brand.
Thanks for allowing us to test the suncream.

mrsnoon · 15/06/2016 21:12
  1. We tested this last week in Spain as it arrived the morning before we went away!
  1. Both my children have had eczema, the eldest isn't so bad now so is able to use a wider variety of creams, however my toddler is very susceptible to breaking out when we use a new product. We tried both the cream and spray on both of them with no problems. I prefer the spray as it seemed to rub in better but the bottle did become harder to use as there's no grip on it once your hands are covered in the lotion. I normally pay slightly less than the RRP for the same size bottle but would happily take advantage of the 2 for £8 offer I've been advertised.
Thanks for letting us join the test!
Eleri1 · 15/06/2016 21:37

We tested both the kids and triple defence suncreams during the brief period of very sunny weather we've had in Wales recently!

We were impressed with both of the creams. We tested them out and about on a walk, in the park and at a party (which involved splashing in a paddling pool!) The cream was applied every few hours throughout the day.

I could not find any difference between the Lloyds Pharmacy brand to the more well known brands we tend to use. The spray function for the child's cream was really useful as our daughter gets ticklish when applying it to her face and neck so I can just spray away and know she is covered!

danson16 · 15/06/2016 22:21

Completed the online survey, hope it went through.
I tested the Triple Defence and Kids spray.

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?

I used the sun lotions while out with my children geocaching, which is an outdoor pursuit and involves a lot of walking and searching.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?

I really like it, I normally get a big brand name and I have to say this not only feels better on my skin and smells really nice, but it also protected me really well. My kids were also well protected, it didn't irritate their skin and they didn't get burnt.
I found both the lotion and the spray sunk in quickly and left mine and the kids skin feeling really nice. I am really impressed with them.

Cocacolaandchocolate · 15/06/2016 23:38

Tested in the garden at the weekend with the pool out! It was a very hot day!

The cream was thick and appeared to stay on well, even when the children got in and out of the pool you could see where the cream had stayed..
The smell was good, not too overpowering but enough to smell like sunscreen. My youngest who tends to have rashy skin had no reaction or sign of the cream being too harsh for him in fact I think his skin was really well moisturised still after Bathtime.
I will certainly be considering to get lloyds own brand in the future
