My 7 year old Ds decided to help me with my cake making session using the Cadbury mixed chocolate buttons, so we made some cookies using the basic recipe of flour, butter and sugar.
When they came out of the oven, I covered them with a little melted chocolate spread then we decorated them with the buttons using the 'one on the cookie, one in the mouth' procedure Wink
He was so proud of his creations, he sent daddy a photo Smile

Since Kraft took over Cadburys the 'chocolate' tastes like shit so you can shove all your buttons and and the rest of it where the sun don't shine.

How delightful Smile

Decided to make 2 things, one for taste and one for my daughter to create.
Made peanut butter cookies decorated with the mix of chocolate buttons, she created "the gruffalo" which I think looked more like a hedgehog but I didnt tell her that. Then we made a banana cake and added the mixture of white and chocolate buttons and it was delicious!!!!! omg!! just lovely, especially when it came out of the oven warm and the chocolate was goey!!

Peanut butter cookie-

200g peanut butter, crunchy or smooth
175g golden caster sugar
1/4 tsp of table salt
1 large egg

Add all together to make a dough, put in pre-heataed oven at 180 or 160 fan for around 12 mins and then let cool down and decorate with buttons.

Banana and chocolate button cake-

3 mashed bananas
4 oz butter/marg
6oz sugar
2 eggs
8 oz self raising flour.
Mixed choc butters, used the whole pack.

Combine all in a greased loaf tin in a preheated 180 oven, bake for 40 mins and you can either eat straight away warm or cool and keep in a sealed container for up to about 4-5 days. Delicious!!!!

SPIKE THE HEDGEHOG CAKE

make a simple sponge cake - 6oz SR flour, 6oz caster sugar - cream together and add 3 eggs and 6oz self raising flour and a drop of vanilla extract. beat until light and fluffy and put into a lined 2lb loaf tin - bake 45 minutes until a skewer put into centre comes out clean.
tip out of baking tin and cool on a wire rack
cut one edge of the cake into a point to form the nose of the hedgehog.
Cover it all in buttercream and use 2 Cadbury's buttons for eyes and the rest stand on edge in rows to form the spines of the hedgehog. Cut a button into a triangle for the nose

We made chocolate button pancakes. This was 9 year old daughters great idea. Unfortunately it didn't quite work out as expected but she still enjoyed them!

Recipe:
300ml milk
100g plain flour
Pinch of salt
2 eggs
Handful of mixed buttons.

We added the buttons once the first side was half cooked before flipping.
After first attempt realised we needed to lower the heat to stop the buttons burning!

Overall they tasted ok but was a bit of a disaster really. Think we may have to try something else with the second bag Sad

'Banana Buddies' according to my daughter.
Usual banana cake recipe:
2 ripe bananas smooshed up
170g caster sugar
170g self raising flour
170g softened butter
3 eggs
And popped half the pack of buttons in too.
Mix it all up, lined loaf tin, 160 degrees, 1hr

Topping was melted white and milk buttons, icing sugar and butter for buttercream topping, then decorated as silly faces - based on the family apparently, charming Wink
With spare topping in case there wasn't enough bananas and chocolate already!

All your recipes look lovely.

Me and my 5 year old made a carrot cake tray bake but instead of walnuts we added buttons to the batter! We made a cream cheese butter icing and used the buttons to decorate it.

It doesn't look that great but it tasted really lovely, the buttons actually worked really well in the mix, the milk chocolate ones held their shape, the white ones didn't but was still nice gooey white chocolateness surprise.

My 5 year old loved doing this (and eating a few buttons along the way!!) so thanks!

Wow so many great cakes here. We decided to make chocolate cup cakes and we each decorated some. The recipe we used was:

100g plain flour
20g cadbury cocoa powder
140g caster sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
a pinch of salt
handful of buttons
40g butter
120ml milk
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Icing:

250g sifted icing sugar
80g butter
25ml milk
a couple of drops vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 170 degrees ( makes 12)

Mix all the dry ingredients together to a sandy texture.
Whisk the milk, egg & Vanilla together and then slowly add to the dry mixture. mix til fully combined.

Spoon the mixture into cupcake cases ( about 2/3 full) and bake for 20 -25 minutes.

Leave to cool.

Icing:
Beat the icing sugar and butter together until the mixture is well combined.
Combine the milk and vanilla together then add to the butter mixture a little at a time. Continue beating until the frosting is light and fluffy.

We loved making the cakes and the girls had so much fun deciding how to decorate them. We made a snowman, an owl, a turtle and some funny faces. The girls loved being able to choose whatever they wanted - and the cakes were yummy!

We were not as creative as some. I am going to steal/borrow the ideas from above to use when i replenished stocks!
We made some fairy cakes and used the buttons to decorate the top. Many buttons were quality checked by all family members and i am sorry to report that many more were not up to standard to finish the cakes ;-)
I am trying to upload the photos but its not working?

So we worked on the perfect recipe for two children to bake together with minimal arguments! We came up with Milk and White Chocolate Brownies!

This is perfect for two kids to bake together as they each get to make their own batter and have their own bowls to lick - RESULT!

Ingredients:

2 bags of milk and white chocolate buttons
200g butter
200g caster sugar
3 eggs - beaten together, then divided into two bowls
100g plain flour

Method

Give each child a bag of buttons and get them to separate the white and milk ones. Supervise closely to minimise stolen button issues...

Child 1 - milk buttons and 100g butter in a bowl
Child 2 - white buttons and 100g butter in a bowl

Microwave for 30 seconds on high, stir bowls then another 30 seconds on high. They should be melted by now, one more stir.

Each bowl gets 100g sugar and half the egg mix. Stir together.

Child 1 - 30g flour in with the milk chocolate mixture
Child 2 - 70g flour in the white chocolate mixture (prevent arguments about who has the most flour by distracting the children)

Stir bowls thoroughly to get all the flour mixed in.

Get a greased and lined 20cm square tin.

Put a blob of milk chocolate mix and then a blob of white chocolate mix in the tin and repeat to create a checkerboard pattern. Layer on top of each other in opposite colours, i.e. white on milk. Stop kids flicking mixture at each other if possible...There should be enough mixture to make two layers.

Put in a preheated fan oven at 160 centigrade for 45 minutes, checking after 35 minutes. It will be cooked when it's no longer wobbly in the middle and the white chocolate bits are golden brown. It will sink a bit in the middle and be all gooey and delicious.

Enjoy!

Finally got round to using the buttons. We've had poorly children. Last night was pancake day, so that's what we made for starters. I did cheat and use ready made ones! Topping one: Nutella spread with buttons, topping two: raspberries and buttons. My youngest originally didn't like pancakes, so she had invisible ones :), these were raspberries and buttons in a bowl on their own.

Hopefully as it is half term next week we can bake some cupcakes with hidden buttons, and cupcakes with buttons on top.

rewardformissingmojo · 10/02/2016 13:46

We used our regular basic recipe;
Weigh eggs; use that weight of butter, flour, and a bit less sugar, plus cocoa powder (about two tablespoons) to make cupcakes. They went in the oven for 15-18 minutes, 200 degrees C fan oven.
Our 6yo daughter decorated with bright blue icing, and the mixed buttons. Apparently they are cookie monsters! Will try to upload photo from my phone shortly.

Simple gluten free sponge with buttercream icing
200g gf flour
200g caster sugar
200g butter
3 eggs
40 mins at 180c
However I couldn't be bothered to walk to the shop to buy more greaseproof paper to line the tins.....big mistake! So decorated cake is only half a cake and is still in the tin. The other half of my sponge is a pile of crumbs Blush

Hi, we received our buttons and were excited to get stuck in except, they were absolutely vile tasting and after a couple each nobody in the house would eat them!
This is not a political rant, I know a lot of people have gotten rather fraught since the company was taken over, but I don't include myself in that group! I hadn't noticed any change in the taste or texture.....UNTIL these buttons arrived.
They were honestly disgusting, if they had been unlabelled I would have guessed they were by kinnerton or some similar cheap brand.
The milk chocolate was strangely dry and crumbly and didn't melt, the White chocolate was reminiscent of those cheap white chocolate mice I used to eat 30 years ago, and they both left a horrible greasy coating on my mouth and teeth.
I have reviewed many things on MN and always taken part 100%, with photos and videos and feedback etc in this case I have to be honest and say we couldn't eat them and we won't eat them, we could attempt to disguise the taste by baking them into something but I find this somewhat disingenuous and it reminds me of Monica from friends and the 'mockolate' storyline.....
So cadburys, it's a big no from us.

Poppiesway · 10/02/2016 21:20

So.. After a poorly child we finally got round to trying the buttons. I don't know why but when I opened the box and saw the bags I thought they were going to be giant buttons. I was then a bit disappointed hey were the small buttons!
Anyway.. We attempted a chocolate courgette cake. I thought the cake would help to sneak 1 of their 5 a days in Wink

I used the BBC good food recipe but omitted the hazelnuts as neither DC will eat them and didn't do the "frosting". I used only a third each of the ingredients or we'd have had to much cake..
For the topping instead of the frosting ds2 (9) used the buttons.. He was meant to do a nice pattern with them so they would slowly melt on top.. Except he let them melt then mixed it all up.. The decorative M is for mumsnet.. Not for Mum!! :(

Ds2 has already eaten half the cake.. And unwittingly half a courgette Grin

With the second bag of buttons we made our own version of rocky road.
We chucked 2 tablespoons of butter, 5 chopped up marshmallows, 2 tablespoons of golden syrup and a DC size handful of buttons in the bowl, melted them all together in the microwave for a minute.

We then added some left over Christmas shortbread biscuits which ds1 had crushed up in a bag with the rolling pin and a small bag of salted popcorn (also left over as no one wanted the bag of salted popcorn I accidentally brought)
All were stirred in together and put into the foil tray (I wash and reuse them). Ds2 put some extra chopped up marshmallows in the top and stuck more buttons on the top.

After sitting in the fridge for a few hours we sliced them up and all tucked in. I won't put popcorn in next time as it went a little bit soggy / chewy but otherwise they were lovely.

If I had known I was to be cooking with these buttons I wouldn't have volunteered to taste them.. I'm not sure cooking with them got the best out of them and I wouldn't buy them to cook with. They'd be far too expensive and wouldn't be my DC's first choice of chocolate to use as a decoration / cook with.
That's not to say they didn't enjoy them, they did, but I'm not sure milk and white chocolate buttons belong in the same bag really..
