This is the feedback thread for the 150 Mumsnetters who are trying the Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump.

Here's what Philips AVENT say, "When you are comfortable and relaxed, your milk flows more easily. That's why we created our most comfortable breast pump yet: Sit comfortably with no need to lean forwards and let our soft massage cushion gently stimulate your milk flow. The breast pump has a unique design, so your milk flows directly from your breast into the bottle, even when you are sitting up straight. The breast pump has a compact design, which makes it easy to position. Its ergonomically-shaped handle offers a comfortable hold and full control when expressing milk. Being small and lightweight means it is easy to store and transport, making pumping on-the-go more discreet."

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

A handy gadget that I use to express breast milk

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

It was very comfortable. No tugging and soreness, both of which I experienced with my electric pump.

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

It was easy to put together and use. i could use it one handed which was useful as I prefer to express when my baby is feeding. I was able to express about 4oz very quickly.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Definitely - takes a lot of the stress out of expressing and is worth investing in. Very compact so useful for taking out and about or to work.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes - it will be replacing my electric pump. I will use it exclusively to express milk

So far: this is about 20 times better than the Tommie tippee one. More efficient.

I'll get back to you when I've used it a few more times.

Q1.
I would describe the pump as a lovely compact easy to use manual pump.

Q2.
I found the pump comfortable especially the not having to hunch over having breasts on the smaller side have found I need to do this even with my electric pump. I have been breast feeding for 10 weeks so did not find that the pump made me tender.

Q3.
This pump was easy to use and clean. Only con was the size of the bottle ot came with which I seemed to fill fairly quickly.

Q4.
I would and have recommended this pump especially if they was hoping to combine feeding.

Q5.
I will continue to use this pump as it's percent for holidays and work and a fair amount of use at home.

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?
A manual breast pump, easy to assemble and use, small and compact so would be good for use at work etc.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?
Very comfortable. I usually use a Medela mini electric which doesn't have a cushion so it is a nice change!

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?
Very easy to assemble and use. Like most manuals to a bit uncomfortable on your hand to use for long. My problem with it is that I found it DID leak unless I was leaning forward! Could be that the flange isn't the correct size as my boobs are quite large. Annoying none the less.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?
Yes as it worked mostly well, and the compact design is great. I still prefer an electric personally but if someone asked me about a manual I would recommend.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes as I donate to the milk bank so it is great to have a quiet pump to use when baby is asleep! Overall a good pump, just not sure about the leakage!

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

A nice, compact pump that doesn't break your back to use!

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

Very comfortable. The cushion not only creates a nice seal (so minimal leakage - annoying) but feels soft and comfortable to use, especially after a rare long period over night when boobs are engorged.

Other pumps have had me leaning forwards to use otherwise milk pools at the top of the pump but the Avent pump lets you sit back and relax whilst pumping.

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

As simple as a manual pump can be. It was easy to take apart and reassemble. I used the microwave steriliser that comes with the Tommee Tippee manual pump and the Avent pump plus bottle fitted in fine.

I found that the suction was stronger than I was expecting so it was a tiny bit uncomfortable for the first few pumps but it was quick to get used to. This strong suction means that after 15 minutes of pumping, my wrist/hand did not tire.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Yes, its a nice little pump that is affordable so I would definitely recommend this one.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will continue to use this pump. I like that I can take it all completely apart and not worry about cleaning hard to reach places. I also like the fact that it is small enough to pop into a bag if needed for work/travel etc. An added bonus is the breast pads that come with the pump. There is a day time set and a night time set with extra absorbency to stop that dreaded 4am dampness. They are disposable so only one use but it gives you a chance to try out a different type of pad.

Having woken up this morning with engorged breasts and what feels like the beginnings of mastitis (no!), I have been using the pump today to try and clear any blockages. It's been great. I've been very pleasantly surprised with how much I've appreciated having this pump, thank you. Fingers crossed I've averted another bout of mastitis too..,

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

A simple to use, lightweight pump that - useful for traveling etc. Comfortable to use and easy to wash/reassemble!

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

Comfortable to use - definitely more comfortable first thing in the morning when my breasts were full (fed baby from one side while pumping o the other). I did find I needed to apply some pressure to keep the suction/vacuum going but this wasn't a problem.

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?
Easy to assemble, wash and reassemble - a big improvement on the agent manual pump I had with my first child four years ago - that one has far too many fiddly bits. The bottle that came with it was far too small but I have bought some larger ones so that I can build up a supply for an evening out in the near future.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?
I'd definitely recommend it as an occasional pump - I'm thinking it would become tiresome to use if you intended to exclusively express but great for travelling/bulding up a supply for an evening out.

Q5. Will you continue to use?
Yes - As previously mentioned I have bought some larger bottles to build up a supply of milk for the freezer.

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

Fantastic! This pump is lightweight, comfortable and I have noticed a marked increase in output compared to previous pumps I've used. It is easy to put together and take apart for cleaning, and extremely easy to use. I prefer a manual pump to an electric pump as I can control it myself and it is not so noisy.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

I found this pump very comfortable. There was no pulling and snagging as I've found on the flanges of other pumps, which had previously left me with blisters. This flange seems to be a perfect fit and therefore there are no leaks. I found my hand cramping on occasion from the action of the squeeze but that isn't to be helped!

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

I found this pump very easy to use. It is clear how it goes together as it is a simple design so there is no faffing around to take it apart and put together to clean.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

I would definitely recommend this pump. It is so lightweight that I was even able to use it while walking around the house on one occasion! I've also found an increase in output, double what I would usually be able to pump. I can only attribute this to the comfort of the pump and the petals on the flange. I found that no milk got caught in the chamber as it does in other pumps I've used, meaning minimal waste of milk.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will certainly continue to use this pump. I literally cannot fault it. Due to the increased output I am going to create a store of frozen milk in the freezer for emergencies. Thank you for choosing me to test this product!

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

I would describe this pump as a handy tool to have in your breastfeeding kit. I feel that an electric pump is better for day to day pumping and to build up a good supply for the freezer. However manual pumps are perfect for quick pumping and to relieve engorgement if you don't want to hand express.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

At first I didn't find it particularly comfortable but that is because I was trying it at the wrong time, my baby had been feeding all morning and then I tried. My baby is 9 months and at times is missing feeds due to playing and eating solids. Sometimes I can become engorged and instead of hand expressing I found this useful to take out the excess until she was ready to feed. A common problem with manual pumps though and this one is no exception is the ache it can produce in your hands!

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

I must say that it was easy to clean and put together and take apart. I do find electric pumps easier to actually use and get milk out though.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Yes I would recommend but not for day to day pumping as previously said. I think this pump will be perfect for me to use when I go back to work to relieve engorgement and that is what I would recommend it for - to relieve engorgement.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I will for the reasons that I have stated above, to relieve engorgement and to take to work with me so that I can express there without a noisy electric pump.

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?
I love that it's only got a few parts so easy to put back together. I can get DH to assemble it if needed, or at least ensure no parts get lost in the dishwasher or steriliser.

I had, but didn't use, the Avent Isis pump with my DD, which had a tiny little grobbin I always put in the wrong way stopping the pump from working correctly.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?
I found it really comfortable once I'd used it a could of times and got the positioning better. It is a nice gentle 'suck', firm but not feeling like I'm getting sucked in!

I got some hand ache using the pump but I guess that improves with time. I have a fast letdown and always have plenty of milk so set about fully draining my breast on the first go! Possibly should have started small to build up my hand muscles :)

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?
Really easy to put together and use. No real way to get it wrong and less pieces to go missing (or forget). The soft bit that presses against the breast was very good at giving a good seal while also being comfortable.

Sadly, like the Isis model, mine has developed a squeak so impossible to use discretely.

What would be good would be some sort of bag for it. I'm starting to pump just for comfort as DS is starting to wean. I therefore don't need the pump to be sterile but would like to keep it together in my bag. Obviously the squeak is now a problem!

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?
Yes and no. The squeak is off-putting but it is a good (and cheap) pump. I love that the accessories that I have with my Isis model fit this one so I can pump directly into a storage container.

We didn't use the bottle as we have BreastFlow bottles which I prefer to use and DS doesn't like the milk just running into his mouth from a conventional teat.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?
Probably, but due to the squeak, I won't be taking it places with me, I'd only use it at home.

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

The thing that may mean I can leave my son for an evening out some time!

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

Very comfortable (at least as far as any milking machine is likely to be!)

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

Took a few attempts to get the handle back in properly after I sterilised it but other than that fine.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

I don't know enough about pumps to recommend it over any other, but wouldn't put people off.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

I signed up to test this because I never did very well at expressing with my daughter and she refused to take a bottle. I figured it was worth trying again with my now 7 week old son. I found it easier to express a reasonable amount than I remember from last time which may have been down to the pump. More importantly my son drank most of it from the bottle with a bit of persuasion, so I'll definitely be carrying on with it to see if this time I can leave my baby with someone else for more than an hour!

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

Easy-to-use, convienient breast pump which you can have always with you (even in handbag).

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

Very comfortable. I could sit down on the bed and control everything. Soft cushion help me to relax :)

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

The breast pump is easy to use. I don’t even need to read the user guide before the first use. Just press the breast pump against your breast, then press down the handle and allow the handle to return to its starting position :)

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Definitely yes. Breast pump is really helpful if you need to stimulate breasts for milk production.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will continue to use this brest pump as it really makes my breast feeding easier. I can express the milk straight to the attached bottle so it is perfect solution for combined: breast and bottle feeding.

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

I would describe the pump as easy, light, portable and quick to use.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

I found it very comfortable. I have only used 1 other pump the electric Medela Swing Electric Breast pump a good 6 years ago for DS and found this just as comfortable.

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

I have only used while my 5 week old is feeding on the other breast and found it very easy because it has a good suction action. I loved that you could sit in a relaxed position without worrying about spillage.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Yes. Its discreet, compact so can be used out and about. It is also easy to use and sterlise.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, as i only occasionally pump for DH to feed baby while out it will be perfect for my needs but i will need to buy the bigger bottle.

Thank you so much for letting me test the pump.

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

Light, comfortable to use, effective.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

Very comfortable. It has only one pressure setting but that makes it very easy on the wrist (and actually doesn't seem to have any negative effect on amount pumped).

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

Pretty easy. Did find the funnel cushion a little pesky insofar as it had a tendency to try and fall off as soon as touched, but once on and pumping it didn't seem to make a difference.

It does have more parts than my other manual pump - and they felt a bit fiddly to clean, but to be fair it was all pretty simple and quick to put back together and almost 'do it with your eyes closed' after a couple of uses.

Managed to get a good 60ml off in about 10-15 minutes, which is good for me.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Yes I would. For the price it's a useful piece of kit that does the job effectively.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

I must admit I think it is the pump I am reaching for more than my other one! I like that it is easy on the wrist and, most importantly, an effective milk extractor! I'd definitely say it was a useful thing to have if you ever think you'll need to express and want something simple in the cupboard.

2) very comfortable, liked being able to sit normally rather than having to lean forward I order to not spill

3) easy to use and assemble

4) I would recommend it for occasional pumping but if using regularly at home it's less effort to use an electric one, although this has the bonus of being able to lean back, if not concurrently breast feeding then this matters less.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?
I found it comfortable to use and I did not have to sit forward to prevent it leaking which was great

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

It's a compact pump, quite easy to assemble and to use - its size makes it quite portable and the fact it's not electric means it's nice and quiet if you want to "pump on the go" (or to take the edge off when you return to work if you're still feeding!)

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

Occasionally my nipple felt a bit pinched by the pump (and even when it didn't it looked quite purple when it came out) but once I had the positioning sorted it was comfortable for the most part, though my wrist began to ache after a while!

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

The pump was very easy to use, much better than I expected a manual to be - looking at my baby (or a picture of him if he wasn't nearby!) definitely helped to encourage my let down too and led to a successful pumping session!

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Yes, I would recommend this for occasional and on-the-go pumping. If I were pumping daily, I think I would be tempted to try an electric pump as I did find I needed to take a break every so often as my wrist began to ache.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, now I know that my DS will take expressed milk from a bottle, I will definitely use the pump now and again so that DH can administer the occasional feed when I am elsewhere or want some quality time with my toddler (or even to myself!)

An easy to use manual breast pump that is discreet and a good alternative to an electric pump.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

I use an electric pump and comfort wise found this no different. I had no leakages and everything was controlled well

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

It was easy to use - one thing I would improve is the handle size - found it difficult to get my hand around it. Being used to electric pumping using this hurt my fingers but I was able to express more milk!

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Q1. Please detail how would you describe the breast pump to friends/family if it came up in conversation?

I would say this was an easy to use, small manual breast pump. It is small enough, light and transportable enough to take to work/out and about and can be used with one hand.

Q2. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

I found this really comfortable, I liked the cushion and found it easy to grip. I note that other people found it small and had to hold the little finger away, I can't remember if I do that- but I have been using it for 5-10 mins, so this wasn't uncomfortable for me.

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

Very easy. I was expecting it to be slower than my electric pump, but in fact it was a lot better, perhaps because I had more control about the speed of the pumping. I got the same amount of milk out, and could walk around whilst pumping, without being tied to a plug socket. I'll definitely use this more- including when I go back to work.
I don't pump every day, as our baby doesn't take a bottle, so I pump every so often, but if the bottles suddenly works, it will be this pump that I use.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Yes, definitely.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes. As above- it will be great when I return to work- especially with the pump cover. It works as well as the electric pump I have, if not better. It is really easy to clean, sterilise and fit together.

Q1. A manual breast pump that is perfect for times when you need to be quiet or discreet but don't want to be covered in milk at the end. It allows you to sit normally rather than hunched over.

Q2. I found it really comfortable as normally I would be hunched over when pumping, as other pumps (manual and electric) have back flow if you sit normally and pump. The pumping action was comfortable with one hand and the pumping itself was comfortable.

Q3. The pump was very easy to put together and I found it better than the old Isis advent pump as the valve was bigger and harder to lose. I did manage to put it together with one hand once which is a bonus. It was easy to find a good position and get pumping and I managed to get a good amount of milk (for me) with the pump.

Q4. I would recommend this to family/friends if they were looking for a manual pump.

Q5. Yes I will be using it at work in my breaks as there is no power supply to the only room I can use and it is easy to use.

Only thing is that sometimes, randomly, the handle squeaks when you pump. Not sure if that is how I put it together or the design.

Q1. A small, quiet, on the go breast pump

  1. How comfortable did you find the breast pump to use?

Very comfortable, so pleased I could sit back whilst expressing!

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

A lot easier than expected! Previously I have used a Tommee tippee electric one which I found annoying & put me off expressing but I wanted to try expressing again as I'm off back to work in 3 months & don't necessarily want to combi feed immediately. This was so practical as it can be used anywhere! I wasn't expecting to get much milk as I do usually struggle with expressing but I seemed to get as much as normal with the electric pump. So quiet as well, and you're not tethered to one spot.
Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

Yes, it works well & is discreet

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, as I will be able to take this to work to express or express en route to work in the car (not while driving I might add - my oh is taking me)
Thank you for allowing me to try this, you've opened my eyes to a great product that otherwise I wouldn't have considered

It is really comfortable. I've used other manual pumps that I've had to sit forward with to help the milk drain into the bottle.

Q3. How easy did you find the breast pump to use?

The breastpump is very easy to put together and use. Couldn't be much simpler really.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump to friends and/or family?

I would certainly recommend and already have to my friend who finds her electric pump a big hassle.

Q5. Will you continue to use your Philips Avent Natural Manual Breast Pump? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will continue to use it as it's easy to use, portable and comfortable. However it has started making a squeaking noise when I use it so I probably won't be able to use it while I feed DD anymore as she finds it distracting and unlatches to start laughing!
