If you're hoping to spruce up your home in time for the festive period, Valspar is looking for 150 Mumsnetters to test their 2.5L Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint.

Here's what they say, "Often it's hard to keep your home spick and span with little ones running around, especially when hosting a large family at Christmas time, but the Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint is set to stand the test of time with its maximum durability credentials. Our easy to clean premium paint includes a super-scrub formula and undergoes vigorous scrub testing to ensure the paint won't fade or chip off when cleaned, making it durable for your family home. This high quality paint allows walls to be wiped down and scrubbed clean once the festivities come to an end, without compromising on colour.

"As well as being available in a variety of finishes, including matt, mid-sheen and gloss, the Valspar unique colour matching technology can replicate any colour the eye can see - that's 2.2 million shades! Choose a colour that's personal to you and your family - be it the shade of a festive Christmas bauble, or a favourite ornament, simply take the item to your local B&Q and its exact colour can be scanned and recreated in paint form."

This product test is open to all UK Mumsnetters who would like to add a splash of colour to their homes. Mumsnetters must be available to trial the product and give their feedback by the end of November.

Selected testers will be sent a voucher for Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint and a Harris roller and tray set and a Harris brush by 15th November. Testers will be required to use the product to paint a room or a feature wall in their home and provide their feedback on a feedback thread on Mumsnet and complete a short feedback survey. Testers will also be asked to share pictures of their completed room transformations by the end of November.

Everyone who gives feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

If you're interested in taking part, please sign up here.

Thanks
MNHQ

Is 2.5l really enough to do an entire room?

Report
MavisGrind · 07/11/2015 15:42

PipBin - I used the premium product in my dining room last year and was happy with the results so last week went and bought some of their bathroom paint. It is the WORST paint I have ever used. I have now completed FIVE COATS and it's still streaky. The colour is lovely but despite thorough mixing it was horrible to apply and the finish is terrible. I've been so disappointed with it as I thought it would be the same quality as Valspar paint I've used previously. I then googled Valspar bathroom paint reviews......

Sorry to put a downer on your thread MNHQ as I know it's about the premium paint, not the bathroom stuff, but I've been so cross about this and am now looking to have to go back to Dulux or similar to make good the job.

MNers be warned!

Aw mavis that's a shame. Which undercoat did you use?

Report
MumOnTheRunAgain · 07/11/2015 20:20

wheel 2.5 litres will cover 25 sq metres, bearing n mind you will likely need 2 coats

Im0gen · 07/11/2015 20:43

So it's only enough paint to do one wall ? Or the whole of very tiny box room? That's a bit rubbish

Report
MumOnTheRunAgain · 07/11/2015 20:50

Every room is a different size. But the premium paint covers extremely well, so one coat may well do the trick if covering 'like for like' but only if you use appropriate colour of undercoat. 2.5l could well cover a room. All depends on size and colours used

Report
Im0gen · 07/11/2015 21:17

So you need to buy undercoat as well, unless you are using a very similar colour to one already one the walls ? That's more like " freshening up " a room than the " transformation" the company seem to be looking for in the OP .

It's just not enough paint to do a decent job , even in most children's bedrooms . And it's only one can, so you can't do the ceiling as well ( unless you are going for the same colour, which wouldnt be usual ) .

Having painted walls in various houses in various conditions for the last 20 odd years I've only ever used undercoat on woodwork or newly plastered surfaces. The fact is, the bathroom paint (and I stress it is only my experience of the bathroom paint the premium paint was fine) went on badly across many coats and gave a terrible finish. When I painted my dining room with the premium range I didn't need an undercoat.

I'd suggest that if a paint which is more expensive than it's rivals also needs an undercoat then it's probably crap. Sorry.

Pipbin · 07/11/2015 21:44

We got the premium and one 2.5 tin just did the box room. But it only needed one coat.

Report
MumOnTheRunAgain · 07/11/2015 21:57

It's paint and primer in one, so don't necessarily need an undercoat unless painting say a light yellow over a dark purple kind of scenario.

Valspar isn't crap paint. It's the top selling paint in the U.S and has been in this country years. It's the brand used in the car industry and coatings industry.... Used for kitchenaids/coca cola cans/London buses.....

I've just painted every single unit in my kitchen with their Premium wood and metal and whilst I'm happy that it is v scrubbable I'm less impressed that about 1/2 of the doors seem to have developed a chip in the 'curing' period of a week. Irritating. I also found the paint quite hard to use because it dries fast on the brush and then the little latexy bits blob into the paint. I'm in two minds tbh. I've already bought Premium to paint the kitchen walls or I'd sign up.

Pigeonpost · 07/11/2015 22:06

Oh and it needed 3 coats and this was off white covering beige so not that massive a change.

On the paint matching front, I would recommend ordering two paint charts as their scanner thing needs an area bigger than one sample chip to scan properly. But if you get two and peel off/cut one chip off one chart and put it next to the same chip on the other chart then bingo!

MumOnTheRunAgain - I appreciate you work with this product and you're absolutely right to point out it's pedigree. Should I have been advised to use an undercoat? (I wasn't, and probably wouldn't have bought it if I'd needed an undercoat). I'm just reporting my experience of this product and I've really been bitterly disappointed with it (and, honestly, I'm rarely disappointed and hate to be so! Grin)

Thank you for all your comments so far :) Valspar have said:

"Hello Mumsnetters! Thank you for your feedback, we are following your fantastic comments and love how excited many of you are about the opportunity to try Valspar paint!

This 2.5L Valspar Premium Wall & Ceiling Paint will cover up to 25m2, so check the size of your project before you start to make sure you can apply 2 coats for the best finish. Also take into consideration that extra coats may be required when making dramatic colours changes (for example painting white or grey onto a dark red or purple!).

We can’t wait for some of you to try it, hear your feedback and see your photos. Whether it is a feature wall, painted fire place or even a chalkboard painted wall we hope you get inspired by the unlimited colour choice!

Good luck and happy painting.
Valspar"

Valspar – avoid dark colours!
Have had appaling experience with Valspar paint colour matching. Just didn't cover with multiple coats and using their own primer. Here's what their complaints department had to say: "For any colour which is highly pigmented (Base B or C), the levels of titanium dioxide are significantly reduced to enable the paint to be tinted to a darker colour. Titanium dioxide is the element in paint which provides complete hiding. It is expected for darker colours to hide poorly this is not just with Valspar paints but with all other paint brands. In effect, the hide of highly pigmented paints is not indicative of poor quality paint."
Really? So inability to "hide" is not indicative of a piss poor paint – well I'll let the other paint manufacturers know!

Actually I think that's a pretty poor response from the company. The additional cost to prove a larger can or two smaller ones would have been negligible , and it would have allowed most testers to do a whole room .

Pete - I've had very good coverage with both Crown and Johnstones paints and they will also colour match

Report
MumOnTheRunAgain · 11/11/2015 18:19

Pete for that colour paint you would require a dark grey undercoat prio to painting. The same as dulux roasted red would need. Hard to tell from your pic what you've used tho. But you say you 'used their own primer' so I assume it was a grey 3 or 4. How many coats was this?
