This thread is for the Mumsnetters who have been trying Little Dish chilled toddler meals and their new range of My First Pizzas.

Here’s what Little Dish say, “When Hillary was expecting her first baby, she realised that you couldn’t buy healthy, home-cooked style meals for toddlers and young children in the shops. She set out to create a range of delicious, nutritious food made from 100% natural ingredients…and so Little Dish was born. Nearly 10 years on, we’re proud to feed around 100k little ones every week. Every Little Dish toddler meal is perfectly nutritionally balanced for a 1 to 3 year old –providing a source of protein and at least 1 portion of veg, low in salt, with no added sugar, additives or preservatives. Our new My First Pizzas are not only delicious (as approved by our Tiny Tasters) – they also provide 1 portion of veg each, contain 35% less salt than the average children’s chilled pizza and of course have no added sugar, additives or preservatives.”

Below are a few questions for you to answer about trying Little Dish meals and pizzas with your DCs – feel free to add any other thoughts you may have though, we’d love to hear them.

Little Dish meals

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals?
I thought they looked great and was sure they would be a winner with my son but he wouldn't have it and refused to try most of them.
  • Which was your child’s favourite meal?
None :( he did try the pasta one but spat it out.
  • Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
I probably would recommend them as I think they are great but my son is a fussy eater and they just didn't work for us.

Little Dish My First Pizzas

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?
I loved the bright packaging that was supplied and think it will look great, I thought the pizzas looked good too and they smelt great. Again unfortunately my son hated them :(
  • Which was your child’s favourite pizza?
The cheese, this is the one he ate three bites of rather than one.
  • Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend them if you think your child will eat them. I tried them and whilst they are a bit bland for my adult taste buds I thought they were quite nice.
  • What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?
I'd love to see some nice desserts. :)

Thank you for the chance to try these and I am sorry my son wasn't more co-operative. I thought they would be a big hit with him and he was exited about getting his own parcel but when it came to eating them he just said they were yucky. I thought they tasted nice though and expect that my other children would have enjoyed them when they were smaller, none have been as fussy as this one!

katyk81 · 09/08/2015 21:23

Just as a follow up on my earlier post, the kids have now munched their way through all the meals and have requested they be added to the shopping list so I think they can be classed as a great success in our household. Just to run through your questions as follows:

Little Dish meals

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals?
Very positive, the kids enjoyed them and I liked the information that was on the packaging- especially advised how many portions of veg were contained.
  • Which was your child’s favourite meal?
My son loved the loved the mild curry and both he and my daughter really enjoyed the pasta bolognaise bake
  • Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes definitely. These are a great (relatively) guilt free solution to convenience food for the kids

Little Dish My First Pizzas

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?
I liked them but felt they may be a little small for the older age group aimed at (3 year olds) and I couldn't see myself giving pizza to a one year old but that is just my personal preference. I think they will look good in the packaging design shown with the info.
  • Which was your child’s favourite pizza?
To my surprise it was the chicken pesto one- which they both turned their noses up at originally!
  • Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes as an occasional solution but perhaps for slightly older kids
  • What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?
Soups maybe, snacks

Thanks once again for including us in this product test

Little Dish meals

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals?
Most of the meals and pizzas were enjoyed by my wee one! They are quick and easy to heat up but not entirely sure they are worth the money.
  • Which was your child’s favourite meal?
The alphabet pasta was scoffed quickly and all the pizzas were enjoyed, despite the meatballs being picked off!
  • Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
They are good to have as a quick option after a late night at work however we eat as a family so it works out more cost effective for us to cook one big meal that serves us all.

Little Dish My First Pizzas

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?
My son is almost 2 and these were a great size for a lunch time meal. We had to supplement the pizza with salad/veg when eating at tea time. I think there could have been more cheese on them but was pleasantly surprised at how soft the base stayed!
  • Which was your child’s favourite pizza?
Cheese and Tomato!
  • Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Probably not! I think they are quite small in size and would be cheaper to make my own using pita bread etc.
  • What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?
I think Little Dish do offer a good variety of meals as it is. Perhaps an option for filled pasta and sauce sold separately or some simple soups!
vlcrhopkins · 10/08/2015 09:52

Hi,

Not tested the Little Dish meals yet, planning on this week.

Pizzas

On first impression, the topping looked flat and not really inviting, a little on the small size, but changed my mind after neither my 3& 6 year olds could finish a whole one each!

Decided to cook all three, so I they didn't like one there was others to try.
The base of all the pizzas were very soft which was nice, no crusts which is a bonus in our house, the sauce didn't go down too well, the butternut squash also didn't taste of butternut squash as my 6 year old told me, must admit it did taste more like carrot! Neither liked the meat balls, spinach or the chicken, it could be just my two who are strange!

My 6 year old liked the margherita best and my 3 year old like the mini meatballs and veg, once meatballs and spinach had been removed.

Would I recommend these to others, yes, only because I liked them and I have two strange eaters!

skankingpiglet · 10/08/2015 10:36

Pizzas
Initial impression was they are a bit small and the toppings seem a bit mean. My DD is 14 months but has hollow legs and appears to be on a 'see-food' diet so I had to make additional side dishes, not really ideal when you have most likely selected the pizza as a quick and lazy meal option. She did enjoy them however, chewing all the topping off first. She only has her 8 front teeth and seemed to struggle a bit with the base (but she's greedy and persistent so managed it eventually).
Her favourite was the chicken pesto of which none was wasted, the other two took a little longer to disappear and had a few crusts discarded.
I had a small nibble and thought they were a bit bland, and certainly blander than the (no added salt) pitta pizzas I make her. I agree with a PP that it doesn't seem worth turning the oven on for something so small and they lack the cooking speed of the meals, particularly when you add the time it takes for the oven to heat.
I think the packaging is nice and bold, and it gives all the information I'd want clearly.
I would recommend the pizzas dependent on the price to people who weren't interested in making their own as I think they are better than other kid's pizzas available. I don't think I would buy them myself (instead either making my own if pizza required or choosing one of your meals if needing convenience) and I don't think they are of comparable value to the meals.

New things to add to the range would be more vegetarian options, and some low sugar puds would be good.

We've not had a chance to try all the meals yet so I'll add feedback for those in a few days.

EllaMenoPea · 10/08/2015 11:32

Little Dish meals

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals?

Loved the packaging and DD enjoyed the colouring page inside. I thought they looked a little on the small side as DD has a VERY healthy appetite. They looked like home cooked food which is a big bonus alongside the veg count.

  • Which was your child’s favourite meal?

The alphabet spaghetti and the fish pie. Both were completely eaten. I found the alphabet spaghetti one had quite a bit of flavour and the others tasted quite bland to my taste.

  • Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes as a quick alternative to cooking.

Little Dish My First Pizzas

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?

They looked a decent size and I like the packaging shown.

  • Which was your child’s favourite pizza?

The meatball one, but she didn't finish all of it which is unusual for her Grin

  • Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes but I'd sooner recommend the ready meals.

  • What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?

Snacks, breakfasts eg porridge.

Thank you very much for choosing us, it's been a lovely, lazy cooking week!

Myfirstbornisacollie · 10/08/2015 11:34

First impression of meals was they looked and smelled good.
DD's favourites are the chicken and butternut squash pie and the chicken risotto but they all went down well.
I'd definitely recommend them and keep a couple in the fridge for a quick tea now and again after a busy day. I was impressed that the meals had quite long dates on them so no worries about wastage.

The pizzas didn't go down so well. They look nice enough but DD turned her nose up at them. She has just turned 2 and we haven't given her pizza before. DH said they tasted good!
I wouldn't buy them again and not sure I'd recommend them as you could add a bit of veg to a shop bought pizza with a similar result.

OhHolyFuck · 10/08/2015 11:51

1 - overall impression of the little dish meals were good, 'proper' meals and liked the fact there was at least one veg portion in each
2 - ds1 liked curry best and ds2 liked the alphabet one. Both liked the pizzas too though
3 - I would recommend - great in an emergency or when just for whatever reasons, you just aren't in a position to cook and need something quick but not full of crap for dinner

My only comment is that while they were a good size for ds2 (2) I thought they were a bit small for ds1 (nearly 5)

1 - again I liked the fact they had veg on but thought they were a bit small for ds1
2 - meatball pizza was the biggest hit with both but they ate the other 2 with no complaints either!
3 - again yes, I would recommend although less so than the meals - unless the pizzas were really competitively priced, I'd just get a normal size one for them to share and do veg sticks alongside

1 - snack packs maybe
, like fruit or veg sticks? Or breadsticks and a meat? And a range of bigger dishes?

Thanks for letting us try them though!

Little Dish meals

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals?
I've used some of the range before, so I feel good about the meals. I like the packaging and in general I like them.
  • Which was your child’s favourite meal?
Hard to tell but he seems to like the fish pie I've given him before. He likes the risotto which was a new one for us.
  • Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives?
Absolutely if they have busy lives or have toddler at childminder they're great. I like to serve them with veg or add veg to them to get the fresh element in there too.

Little Dish My First Pizzas

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?
I thought they looked nice but didn't think my 15 month old would finish a whole one (and he didn't)
  • Which was your child’s favourite pizza?
They fajita one?
  • Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives?
Yes I think they're fun and there's nothing like it with as little salt/additive on the market. The recommendation would depend on price I have to say. As with the meals I actually only buy them if they're on offer as otherwise find they aren't worth they money.
  • What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?
I'm not sure what I'd like but I tend to not choose meals with Rice as a side, or even the pasta one because that stuff is so cheap and easy to do, it's pointless paying over £2 for something you could make yourself. I think the range is quite well balanced. Pizza is great as a snack or with other stuff as a meal. Thank you

I think there already is a range of meals for older children (like 3/4+) Smile

bonzo77 · 10/08/2015 14:16

Little Dish meals
- What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals?
cute packaging, good portion size, seemed very watery / liquidy. I personally did not like them (I tasted them).
- Which was your child’s favourite meal?
DS1 (aged5) liked the lasagne best. DS2 (2.7) really did not like any of them. But he is super fussy.
- Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
My relatives: no. They would turn their noses up at anything pre-prepared! I would recommend them to others as a sort of back up / emergency meal. I usually shop at Sainsbury's and they do a few kids meals, including a lasagne which I think is nicer than the Little Dish one.

Little Dish My First Pizzas
- What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?
Good portion size, a bit stodgy.
- Which was your child’s favourite pizza?
plain cheese and tomato.
- Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Again, see my response above. I tend to buy pizza bases and then keep home made tomato with hidden veg sauce in the freezer (doubles up for pasta and for meat balls).

- What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?
I think there is a gap in the market for ready made meals that are for example dairy free.
Ready made pasta sauces with hidden veg, maybe in individual portions: they could be sold in snap pots like yogurts and made suitable for home freezing. Eg tomato, bolognese.

MotherMarshall · 10/08/2015 16:12

My overall impression of Little Dish meals is they are superb! I myself have eaten a number of their meals and find that in terms of flavour and value, these meals stand out a mile from similar kids ranges on the market, such as; Annabel Karmel and Asda chosen by Kids range. In particular the salt flavour. My family and I hate the taste of salt and the health impact of course so we find most ready meals contain a huge amount of salt but these don't. The flavour comes from the food and not enhancements.

My child’s favourite meal is the Chicken and Vegetable risotto. My son has eaten this meal regularly since he was around the age of 1 and he is 3 now and still loves it. I sometimes help him to finish it off as it is a very generous portion.

I would, and have recommended Little Dish meals to friends and family because you never know if you have a very hectic week, the reassurance of having a tasty/healthy meal waiting in the fridge for you or your little one is a God send! I also add 2 extra dishes a week to my shopping delivery for my 85yo Grandmother. My Gran has to monitor her salt intake so these meals are great for her. Also, the portion size is perfect and the most important thing, she loves the taste of the dishes. Her favourite is the spaghetti and meatballs.

My overall impression of the pizza's was also fab! Great size, less than 10 mins in the oven and the flavours of them were lovely. As with the dishes above, the fact I couldn't taste salt at all was also very pleasing.

My childs favourite pizza was the plain cheese and tomato. He wasn't too keen on the pesto and meatball one as I think pesto is quite an acquired taste (I love it) so helped him finish this one off.

I would most definitely recommend these pizzas to my friends and family and as mentioned above, my Gran loves the size, flavour and healthy message of Little Dish meals so was trying to pinch one of these pizza's too! so I will no doubt be ordering these for her when I can. Once again, the flavour and convenience of these pizza's mean that I wouldn't hesitate to tell my friends and family to go get some!

I know Little Dish make Shepherds Pie and other meals with potato and meat but just prepared plain mashed potato would be great as a healthy side (as mentioned numerous times above, most contain large volumes of salt). I would also love to see a larger range of curry and rice dishes as my son loves spicy food and possibly and cheeky little nan bread. I would also love to see a range of desserts from Little Dish such as, Apple Crumble (request from my Gran), Apple sponge pudding with custard for my son. I trust the brand and what is stands for/represents therefore I would love to see their range expand.

We still have a few meals left to eat so hopefully I can post a couple of pictures later this week, it completely slipped my mind, sorry!

Thank you so much for sending these us these delicious meals. :) x

GiveMeBackMyName · 10/08/2015 16:41

What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals?

Good packaging, appealing to the kids and I like the activities on the inside. They look fairly healthy and the nutritional information is clearly laid out.

Which was your child’s favourite meal?

Definitely the fish pie (he's had this before) with the cottage pie a close second. Wasn't so keen on the turkey meatball pasta.

Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes. They're the sort of thing it would be good to have in the freezer for a quick and easy meal when time is short. Though I think the portion sizes are a little small - DS is only 1 but he has a big appetite and easily got through these. I think they were also a little bland, DS has a preference for strong flavours! They're probably not chunky or textured enough for older children.

What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?

Okay. Again a little small but the base was too thick (though it stayed soft which is good). Not enough cheese.

Which was your child’s favourite pizza?

Cheese and tomato. The meatball one went down fairly well, and I thought this one was nicest. The chicken and pesto one was mainly thrown on the floor - and had a weird perfume smell!

Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Maybe, depending on the price. We usually make our own pizzas and I don't think buying these would be any more convenient.

What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?

Breakfast cereals - we've tried a lot and DS not that fussed about any of them but he generally likes Little Dish meals so it could be a winner. Or ready made pasta sauces with no added salt or sugar.

starlight36 · 10/08/2015 17:05

Firstly thank you to Little Dish and Mumsnet for the opportunity to try this range. The cool bag and enclosed pack has already been used for a few picnic outings!

Little Dish meals

The meals were all of much better quality than other children's' ready meals we've tried before. The portion size was appropriate and they tasted pretty good. The low salt levels and inclusion of vegetables has to be a bonus.
The pasta dishes were more of a hit with my son (official tester and a fussy 2 1/2 yr old ) and daughter (aged 4 1/2 who wanted to join in!). The alphabet pasta was probably their favourite because of the added fun of the letters. One slight criticism was that the top of the lasagna didn't get crispy -even when oven cooked - which made the dish less attractive to my children. However I think this is pretty common with ready-meal lasagnas. The chicken and butternut squash was my son's least favourite - he thought it was too 'mushy' but he can be quite fussy about the textures of food.
I woukd recommend these dishes as a good option to have in for quick meals or to take along to friends / relatives' houses who are unsure what to cook for young children.
The finger puppets were a huge hit with my daughter who has been busy creating puppet shows all week.

Little Dish My First Pizzas

I was initially surprised at the size and thickness of the pizzas as had thought they would be thin crust and wider.

My children didn't really like the pizzas. My son liked the toppings and licked these off to eat them but didn't like the taste or texture of the base. My daughter didn't like the taste. With both I think they already like either our homemade pizzas or like to share slices of a bought (salt-heavy) pizza. The concept of an individual pizza to themselves seemed a bit strange as they see pizza more as a 'sharing' meal.
The packaging looks great and I really liked the concept and wanted my cheese-loving son to like a healthier version of his favourite meal but unfortunately these weren't a hit in our house.
I would definitely recommend these to anyone who has children who haven't already become attached to the taste / texture of thin crust pizzas. The packaging looks good and matches the bright colours of the Little Dish meals.

If it is possible to make a thinner crust version of the pizza which still managed to be low salt this would be more popular in our household. A vegetarian risotto and a veggie pasta dish would be good additions to the range.

My daughter refused to try any of them :-(. Mt daughter's friend enjoyed the meatballs!
  • Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes - seem a good option for less fussy children!

Little Dish My First Pizzas

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?
Quite small, but nicely presented. I would rather they were slightly thinner, but wider as it was overcooked on top by the time it was heated through.
  • Which was your child’s favourite pizza?
Cheese and tomato
  • Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would if reasonably priced. Good to get a portion of veg on the pizza.
  • What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?
My daughter loves the chicke, tomato and basil pasta from M&S. Think this is partly because of the animal shaped pasta. Might be good to use novelty shapes. I woulod also like the alphabet pasta to be lower case as then my daughter could recognise the letters and we could have a game with them. This might encourage her to try some!
Novia · 10/08/2015 18:43

My DD was away for 3 days so a bit behind on testing. She had the cottage pie with 7 veg tonight and seemed to enjoy it. Usually I have to take over the spoon fairly early, but she ate most of this herself. As previously mentioned, heating instructions are far too long - a minute is generally sufficient. I was impressed to get a voucher from Little Dish in the post, to replace the damaged meal. Nice touch/customer service.

BirgitteNyborg · 10/08/2015 18:48
  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals?

Nicely packaged and presented. Bit bland tasting though. Have not been able to convince either of my two kids to eat more than a few mouthfuls of any of the meals :(

  • Which was your child’s favourite meal?

None, they didn't seem to like any of them, particularly :(

why? If not, why not?

Yes, they are a nice easy option... if the kids will eat them!

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?

They look nice, just like a proper grown up pizza :)

  • Which was your child’s favourite pizza?

They didn't really eat any of them fully but I would say the cheese and tomato got eaten the most.

Little Dish meals

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish meals? Good, we have purchased them before and along with M and S children's meals they are usually in ur freezer for emergencies.
  • Which was your child’s favourite meal?
They both like the cottage pie and lasagne best. The chicken risotto was inedible and I would not buy that again.
  • Would you recommend Little Dish meals to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes they are great to have as stand by meals and are freezable.

Little Dish My First Pizzas

  • What was your overall impression of Little Dish My First Pizzas?
I was disappointed, I thought they were very small and the toppings were very stingy. I would not be prepared to spend £2/2.50 on these.
  • Which was your child’s favourite pizza?
To be honest, none were particularly successful although the cheese and tomato was the best, I added more cheese though!
  • Would you recommend Little Dish pizzas to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

No I think pizza is a treat, so I would probably buy a 'normal one' and not worry about salt content, or make my own.

  • What other healthy, natural food would you like Little Dish to make?
Maybe puddings or filled pasta?

shaunying · 10/08/2015 21:01

Our son has loved all the ready meals, especially the Pasta and the meatballs. He wasn't entirely keen on the pizza's though. He liked the toppings and his favourite was the Chicken with Pesto, but the bases I thought could have been a little thinner as he didn't really eat much of those.
Overall I'd say he would quite happily eat all of the meals again, which is really good considering he's just entering a fussy phase of what he will and won't eat.

Novia · 10/08/2015 21:20

Just had feedback on the cheese & tomato pizza. I wasn't there but according to DH, DD rejected it. He said he tasted it and didn't think it was very nice - base too thick and claggy and not enough topping. He said it was tasteless.

Hi. My little ones really liked the little dish dinners. We already buy them quite often as a quick but healthy tea. The packaging is always well thought out, i.e fun colouring in on inside.

Would agree with lot of the other mners that pizzas could do with a bit more cheese. The base was quite thick, so the topping got a bit 'overdone' the first time I cooked one. However the ingredients seemed good quality. The kids enjoyed the meatball pizza the most. They liked the spicy taste too it.

They also enjoyed the turkey meatballs meal and the lasagne the most in the meals. I didn't have the curry that most people had, which was a shame as I think they would have liked to try that. I had 5 meals, not sure if anyone had more than this?
