This is the feedback thread for the 20 Mumsnetters who tried the Kenwood kCook.

Here’s what the people at Kenwood say, “Whipping up a one-pot wonder for your family has never been easier thanks to the new kCook cooking food processor from Kenwood which not only chops and stirs, but also cooks delicious dishes at the touch of a few buttons. All this, plus a fantastic specially-developed recipe app to provide a little inspiration at every meal time, makes the kCook the new must-have kitchen essential.

The three bowl tools coupled with the app make the laborious tasks of thinking up a meal, preparing ingredients and endlessly stirring over a hot stove a thing of the past. Simply follow one of over 200 recipes available on the app, or adapt them to your taste using the kCook’s manual modes which allow the speeds and temperatures to be changed.”

Testers, we’d like you to answer the below questions:

Q1. How would you describe the kCook to friends or family who had never heard of it before? What was your overall impression of it?

Q2. How easy, or not, did you find to use the kCook? What time saving tips did you find when using the kCook?

Q3. What family meals did you create with the kCook? Did they go down well with your family? We’d love it if you could post some pictures of your dishes on this thread.

Q4. Did you use the Kenwood recipe app? If so, what did you think of it? Did you discover new recipes you hadn’t tried before?

Q5. If it came up in conversation, do you think you’d recommend the kCook to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Non-testers, what’s your favourite dish to make in a food processor? Everyone who adds their thoughts to this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win their own kCook.

Thanks
MNHQ

I love a strawberry milkshake

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 29/06/2015 00:29

Sorry kcook app - it was the beef stroganoff recipe that was confusing.
I haven't tried the goulash

JazzAnnNonMouse · 29/06/2015 01:13

Non tester
We don't have a good processor but my grandma used to make the lightest sponges in hers

SweetPeaPods · 29/06/2015 08:34

Non tester- I'm not lucky enough to own a food processor but if I did I would use it for batch cooking for the freezer to help reduce some effort, and for soups.

FeelingSmurfy · 29/06/2015 11:26

SweetPeaPods this would not be suitable for batch cooking, to give you an idea of size it would serve 3 full portions of soup for adults. I am hoping that once I have had more practice it will be just as easy to make a fresh batch as it would to batch cook less frequently

lionheart · 29/06/2015 12:18

Non tester. Soups, sauces and pastry would be my choices.

keely79 · 29/06/2015 14:59

App definitely needs some work. Every so often, ingredient or quantity will be missing, or there will some ingredient referred to which is undecipherable - e.g. the tuna empanadas - what is "homemade wafer dumpling dough" and how much of it do I need to make the dish?

If I had bought a £330 appliance, the least I would expect would be a flash app that worked brilliantly.

DaddyDanLondon · 29/06/2015 15:27

It's brilliant to make quick, frozen yoghurt. Just add frozen fruit/berries to some yoghurt out of the grudge and you have instant soft serve Fro-Yo!! Lush

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 29/06/2015 15:41

We got at least six servings of soup yesterday - and now frozen some!

Bambooshoots14 · 29/06/2015 17:27

We got 3 portions of soup but I had halved the ingredients

Ham croquets are now done but are a lot of effort (including 12 hours resting time) so I doubt I'll make them again

Well my machine wasn't absolutely full, would say 4 bowls of soup max for us, but it was for adults and we do have it for evening meal and no dessert so may have more than you?

Just checked and the average tin of soup is 400g and the machine holds around 1600 maximum, so 4 tins worth. We have a full tin each if we are just having soup for evening meal

kierie · 29/06/2015 20:48

Non tester- I use my processor to make banana ice cream. When a banana's on its way out, peel it and chuck it in the freezer. When you fancy ice cream, just take out the banana, leave it out for about 15 mins and then whizz it up in the processor. It has the same texture as ice cream. Yum!

lottietiger · 29/06/2015 22:34

Shepherds pie with pre cooked meat. Chop the meat onions and carrots in the food processor then make as normal.
Otherwise any soups and onions for bhajis

ha2el · 30/06/2015 12:26

love curries, so spicy dishes and especially with fish.

FeelingSmurfy · 30/06/2015 15:14

I checked with MNet and the final reviews are needed by Friday Smile just a heads up for the testers

I was delighted to be chosen to test the KCook and so was dh, it even encouraged him to do some cooking!!!

Q1. How would you describe the kCook to friends or family who had never heard of it before? What was your overall impression of it?

It's a food processor that chops and blends your food, then cooks it whilst stirring it. I've told my family and friends and they are very jealous!

My first impression was that it was pretty overwhelming, it looked alot more complicated than I expected it to be, but turned out to be a lot more user friendly than I first thought.

The instructions are not perhaps laid out as well as they could have been and don't explain things properly.

It would have been better with a retractable cord and a place to store the accessories compactly.

The lid could do with some work, it's far too stiff, even my dh struggles with it. It also steams up very quickly so you have to remove the lid to check on the progress, which then lets the heat out. Also, taking the seal out of the lid to clean every time is a real nuisance.

Q2. How easy, or not, did you find to use the kCook? What time saving tips did you find when using the kCook?

The kCook is really easy to use! It was quicker to just boil the spaghetti in a separate pot when making the carbonara.

To be honest it's not a time saving device as such, more a device that allows you to do other jobs whilst it cooks, the actual cooking process takes longer than it would if you'd done it yourself.

Q3. What family meals did you create with the kCook? Did they go down well with your family? We’d love it if you could post some pictures of your dishes on this thread.

So sorry, I didn't think to take pictures! So far we've made rice pudding, risotto, macaroni cheese, spaghetti carbonara, porridge and Stew of Life. They all went down really well, but they ALL took alot longer than the recipe said.

When it comes to family meals I like to batch cook and freeze half, but the kCook bowl doesn't have the capacity for that.

Q4. Did you use the Kenwood recipe app? If so, what did you think of it? Did you discover new recipes you hadn’t tried before?

I've used the recipe app for most of the meals I've made. I think it's an excellent idea but it really needs more work:

*all the recipes I've tried took longer than the app said
*all the recipes I've tried had mistakes in the ingredients or the instructions
*sometimes there's the same recipe twice in the app but each recipe does it differently which is a little confusing
*it would be a fantastic idea to have a search function so that you can search and see if it has a recipe you're looking for, or even better so that you can search based on an ingredient you'd like to use!

I've definitely come across some recipes I've not tried before that I'll try soon.

Q5. If it came up in conversation, do you think you’d recommend the kCook to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would, although I don't think that any of my friends or family could afford it at its current price. It's great for busy mums who want to cook from scratch but also have other things to get on with at the same time. If you're weaning (like my son is) then it's great for making baby food to batch freeze.

I'm very glad to have mine!

marymanc · 30/06/2015 16:04

I love making hummus in the food processer in the summer and a delicious pepper soup for the winter.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 30/06/2015 16:55

Q1. How would you describe the kCook to friends or family who had never heard of it before? What was your overall impression of it?

I would describe it as a food processor that also cooks one pot recipes such as stews/soup/risotto etc

Q2. How easy, or not, did you find to use the kCook? What time saving tips did you find when using the kCook?

I found it fairly easy although I found the instructions of how to remove the pot from the base confusing. That could just be me as I prefer written instructions and found the illustration a little unclear. I also am still under the impression (please correct me if wrong!) that you have to remove the lid before you remove the pot - which I don't really like as hot liquid splashes about even when the pot is not overfilled

Q3. What family meals did you create with the kCook? Did they go down well with your family? We’d love it if you could post some pictures of your dishes on this thread.

I have made: chorizo and sweet potato soup; spAghetti bolognaise sauce; pesto; leek and potato soup; beef stew; beef rendang and macaroni cheese.

Q4. Did you use the Kenwood recipe app? If so, what did you think of it? Did you discover new recipes you hadn’t tried before?

I think overall it is good but the search function could be better. Also some of the recipes seem to include too much fluid and seem to undercook the root veg. I'm referring particularly to the leek and potato soup recipe which I used as a base for the chorizo and sweet potato soup recipe and the bolognaise recipe.

Q5. If it came up in conversation, do you think you’d recommend the kCook to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I think I would, given the price - it's very reasonable when compared to a thermomix. However, it would only suit certain types of cook (those who make various one pot recipes). Also, maybe we are very greedy but I'm not sure that it would feed 4 hungry adults so it would depend on the size/make up of the family I was recommending it to

FeelingSmurfy · 30/06/2015 19:54

Gobbollin You have to turn the lid so that it is removable but could then leave it in place, it wouldn't be secure but may be a bit better than totally going without?

FeelingSmurfy · 30/06/2015 21:53

Have any of the other testers got any tips for bolognese/tomato pasta sauce? I'm hoping to try that tomorrow

macaroonmayhem · 30/06/2015 22:59

Thank you Mumsnet for letting me test this. I'm heading off on holiday so here are my final thoughts...

I like it and I'll continue using it but I would not have paid the RRP for it. It chops, but not as well as my other Kenwood processor. It cooks, but the results are not quite as good as if I did things in a saucepan. The benefit is, as others have said, you can leave it to cook while you go off and do other things. But everything takes about twice as long to cook as it does the conventional way. Plus I dont think it gives as good results as when I cook from scratch myself, although it's not far off.

I said in my application to test it that I was in a cooking rut and needed inspiration to make different things. I have made new things and I think we have enjoyed healthier meals. But there needs to be a lot more work done to the App to improve it and add in more recipes.

Overall I'm undecided. Would I recommend it to a friend? I don't know because I still don't know how to describe it, or say why it's beneficial. I suppose if you don't cook much from scratch just now, this is an easyish way to start but it's also an expensive one. And that's where I think it falls down, it's just too expensive.

IDismyname · 30/06/2015 23:05

How do you extract the seal from the lid? Have I not RTF manual well enough? I had a vague go trying to hoik it out with the handle of a teaspoon, but didn't want to break it.

Advice... Wise Kcookers?

knotnowdear · 01/07/2015 05:38

I have a Thermomix, which is similar - more features but more expensive.

I use it for everything - mincing meat, making breadcrumbs, bechamel sauce, cheese sauce, grinding and roasting spices, bolognese, mixing dough, sorbet, "soft serve" ice cream out of frozen fruit, risotto, butter, mayo, dim sum, chilli, yoghurt, flourless chocolate cake, coleslaw, butter chicken, hummus, a lethal artichoke dip. Lots of things. I use it every day.

Bambooshoots14 · 01/07/2015 07:12

I haven't been removing the seal in the lid but also never took the manual out the box so didn't realise I should and the dishwasher gets it clean fine

Bambooshoots14 · 01/07/2015 07:13

knot do you have the artichoke dip recipe please?
