Kärcher SC1 Steam Stick - Review thread - non testers - chance to win one of your own! NOW CLOSED

This thread is for the 30 Mumsnetters who are currently testing out the Kärcher SC1 Steam Stick.

Kärcher say "The SC1 Steam Stick is the UK’s first handheld steamer that can also be used to clean floors. The Steam Stick cleans deeper without chemicals killing 99.99% of all bacteria just using tap water, making it an environmentally and family friendly alternative to chemical cleaners. It’s an innovative new way to help you effortlessly clean the most difficult and frequent household hotspots; whether it’s cleaning everyday dirt from floors, limescale from bathroom tiles, spot cleaning stubborn carpet stains or eradicating tough, dried-on oven grease."

Non-Testers: If you’re not an official tester but you’d like another chance to be in with a chance of getting a Steam Stick (RRP: £99.99) for yourself then please share on this thread where in your house could really benefit from a deep steam clean? Is there a task or area you always avoid? Where would you most like to put it to use?

Testers: We'll be asking you to add feedback twice - we'd like your first impressions now and once you've had a bit of time to test out your Steam Stick, we will add some more questions.

So, for your first impressions, Kärcher would love to know:

  • Where have you used the Steam Stick?
  • What cleaning chore have you been most pleased with the results from using the Steam Stick?
  • What were your impressions from the first few uses?

Thanks and good luck!

Non-Tester
would love to do my hideous kitchen floor, as the highchair bomb area is utterly vile to keep clean, plus the bathroom wall tiles as the grout is so tricky to get into Smile

CrispyHedgeHogHoHoHo · 27/12/2014 19:30

so sorry, I've not had a c hance to test it yet.. been poorly and bedridden for a few days. Will get it out of the box in a couple of days and post back

Want to say thank you sooo much for sending it to me :)

smokedgarlic · 27/12/2014 21:04

My two dds have a gruesome habit of stepping in dog poo and walking it into my hallway. Seriously what could be worse. I am trying to train the dds to look where they are walking but in the meantime I could really do with a steam clean of the hallway . I could do their shoes too... The possibilities !

Squiffie · 27/12/2014 21:05

Non tester here...

I'd love to win one of these! My first stop would be the kitchen, probably the oven as I don't think it's been properly cleaned since we moved in 4 years since.
Then the rest of the kitchen, then the bathroom, the lounge....

ohlittlepea · 28/12/2014 06:51

Non tester- I'd use it in our kitchen, knowing the surfaces were clean and chemical free would be a big comfort when preparing my baby's meals.

meep · 28/12/2014 07:20

Non tester: I'd use it on my oven and extractor filters.....I am normally to lazy to clean them properly and a wee bit scared of the harsh chemicals. A no chemical blast sounds ideal!

melodycat · 28/12/2014 07:59

Non tester, would love to try it in my kitchen

3boystaxi · 28/12/2014 08:25

If there are any of these still going I would love to test one. I have terracotta tiles with a little imprint on the floor and NO steam cleaner has ever got them clean…. Each time we clean its in Cinderella style… scrubbing brush, soap and sponges for hours and hours.

Please let me go to the ball this year (if there are any left!!).

Nitnatpaddywack · 28/12/2014 09:18

Non tester. I'd love to try the steam mop out on my oven as I hate the residue left by oven cleaning products. My bathroom shower would also put it to the test as it's suffering from stubborn mould and limescale stains thanks to a dripping shower head.

Non-tester: I reckon the place in our house that could most use a steam clean is the shower. I think because I only notice the muck when I'm in it and it's not bad enough to make me think to clean it as soon as I get out it just gets ignored. With a steam stick to play with I'd actually get round to it!

Tester

I've been most impressed with the floors. They look and feel immaculate. After that, I got a bit overexcited and ran about the house steaming random things without reading the instructions so may well not be using the correct attachments and the results weren't as awesome. I thought the grime would just blast away but I think it'll still need a bit of a scrub first. My bathroom needs a good clean so I will report back again after that.

DifferentNow · 28/12/2014 10:57

Also meant to say thank you so much MNHQ and Kärcher for choosing me to test this product. Thanks

Babycarmen · 28/12/2014 10:57

My bathroom! My poor neglected bathroom! The tiles are crying out for a steam clean.. if only I had one!

That's what I get for trying to be clever.

roisin · 28/12/2014 11:33

non tester: I would use a steam cleaner on the bathroom tiles.

ha2el · 28/12/2014 12:48

Does it do Curtains? I have a huge, wide door curtain which is a beautiful yellow colour. Ten years down the line it is more than a little grubby where it drags across the floor. I have always baulked at paying the cost to dry clean.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 28/12/2014 12:56

Tester here, but i never got an email telling me this thread was up and running, only noticed it by chance.

Where have you used the Steam Stick?

I have used the steam stick in pretty much every room. I've mopped all my laminate flooring, cleaned my kitchen cabinets and tiles, steamed my ensuite, refreshed rugs and curtains and cleaned grot from around my taps in all three bathrooms.

  • What cleaning chore have you been most pleased with the results from using the Steam Stick?

Probably cleaning off the sticky grease from the outside of my cooker hood - no product yet invented can get that final stickiness away, but it's gone after a blast with the steam stick.

  • What were your impressions from the first few uses?

Bear with me on this one, it might be long!!

Lots of "bits" when I opened the box, looked a bit daunting to assemble.

More cloths would be useful - 1 of each type feels a bit stingy and also not great if I want to steam the whole house - I'm not going to clean my bathrooms and kitchen with the same cloth, yuck.

Like the accessory bag - great for keeping all the little bits in one place.

A measuring jug would be handy - the instructions state a max amount of water, but nothing to measure it with. Either a jug or a graduated scale on the side like a kettle would be useful.

The floor cloth seems odd - once it's wet, it just flaps about on the "long edge" that's not caught in with clips. Means every time I place the floor head down I have to jiggle it about to ensure that the cloth is sitting correctly and not gathering up under the head.

It produces way more steam that my vax floor cleaner does.

The cord is too short! It won't reach from my bedroom sockets to my ensuite (my house isn't huge, just a regular 3 bed detached property), nor from the hall into my daughter's bathroom. An extra metre would make all the difference!

It's loud in enclosed spaces, such as a shower cubicle, I didn't expect that.

I loved the small brush head to clean my tile grout.

I liked how easily the head on the floor kit moves around, really great for round radiator pipes etc.

The tiny brush attachment isn't going to last long - I used it to clean around my downstairs loo taps and it's all bent and out of shape after just one use - the bristles just don't like the heat!

It can feel a little cumbersome to press the steam button all the time when mopping floors - it gave me cramp in my hand. I'd prefer an option to lock it down if possible, or else a softer type switch ( my vax has a dead mans trigger on the handle which I use my whole hand to press down as I grip the stem, much easier to use than a stiff little button).

The first floor I mopped was my kitchen, which has black flooring. It left the floor very wet, but seemed better as it was used more - unfortunately the sogginess just left streaks so i had to mop it again. Perhaps I used the machine before it was ready, which leads me to my last point.........

An indicator light of some description would be handy so you know when it's ready - just telling me it's on is of no use!!!

Overall, I like it, couple of niggly things but I'm looking forward to using it more and getting to know if better. Some cleaning ideas would be handy in the book though as I'm not sure of all the things it's safe to use on!

Scatlett4456 · 28/12/2014 13:55

None tester, around the animal bowls would be very useful, kill all the nasties.

LEE88 · 28/12/2014 14:10

Non tester

I would use this to clean all the tiles in my bathroom which never seem to clean up properly by scrubbing them and would try it on my oven too as that is the one job I really hate!

badgermum · 28/12/2014 14:18

My kitchen would benefit the most all under the cupboards and around and behind the cooker

HelenSw4les · 28/12/2014 14:42

The bathroom could do with a thorough steam clean. We are due to get it replaced in the next year or so and it looks quite grubby, would love the opportunity to spruce it up in the meantime.

RedKites · 28/12/2014 14:59

Non tester. I would use it for the tiles in the bathroom.

Funkyferret · 28/12/2014 16:01

I'm not a tester but the battle against filth in this house would really put it through its paces! I'd start with the bathroom where there are silly textured floor tiles which are just a dirt trap, walls tiles that I'd love to try and get the hair dye out of and a blind that seems to be a dust magnet.
