This thread is for the MNers who've been trying out the TomTom GO 5000.

Below are some questions to get you started but please feel free to add other comments too.

In terms of your first impressions...

  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

Thanks,
MNHQ

chipping we have found that you need to talk to it at normal volume but you need to find the particular tone / rhythm ,it's working quite well for us now .

What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
Looked very straightforward to use. Minimal packaging (which is brilliant in an age of sealed plastic fortresses). I like the screen size. The holder attached VERY well to the windscreen.

How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
Pretty easy. The update didn't take very long at all on my computer, maybe 20min. tops. It seems to be fairly intuitive to use, which is great as I like to fiddle with techy things, using instructions only when I get stuck. I've not had a satnav before, so was impressed at being able to get going with it right away. I have found setting my Home location tricky, strangely. Will check through this thread for tips.

What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
Have done a lot of short local journeys, and a trip into West London to a location we haven't been to before. We also used the map to search for "green space" to take our DD to. It worked very well. We like to spontaneously explore areas when we go somewhere, so the TomTom seems to be quite a good tool to help find things we might have missed.

The town I am in has had a LOT of road closures/construction happening, and the traffic cameras haven't been reliable (I believe they shut them off if there has been an accident) so I've used the TomTom when heading out so I can make sure I get home in time for school pick up. I've also used it sitting at home to see how all of the traffic is flowing before deciding to go out. It has helped me to time some of my trips right from the sofa.

I've been very impressed with how quickly my route is updated when I turn off the suggested route. Only one reminder and then it just recalculates. A huge difference to my husbands Android phone satnav app. It seems to struggle/panic if you change route (and loses signal quite a bit, resulting in me sitting next to my husband moving his phone in a figure 8 pattern to regain signal).

I have only used the voice control to accept/decline the option of a new route being found (due to traffic), it responded perfectly each time. I do have a North American accent though, so not sure it it's down to that ;-)

My DD loves the joking Aussie voice (Jake?). I do believe she thinks he's one of the Wiggles. I agree with a pp about possibly incorporating more phrases for him though.

So, I've been very happy with the satnav thus far. I find it gives me more confidence driving to places I don't know/don't know well, but even better it has helped me avoid endless tailbacks, which it looks like my area is going to be enduring for a few months to come.

Thank you so much for choosing me to test the satnav. Will add any further feedback as I continue using it.

  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
I was really impressed - thought it looked lovely, really sleek, big, clear screen and looked like it was "worth" the money - not cheap and plasticky. It turned on instantly and located us immediately even in the house - no standing on the doorstep and waving the thing around for 15 minutes like other satnavs. Very user friendly. The lack of a case, or even a bag to keep it in is a pain, though - for the price, and with a screen like that (especially as it's not recessed, so likely to scratch easily) seems a real oversight.
  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
Again, very easy. Everything is labelled well and it's easy to get going with it - but the updates were a nightmare. It took me around 7 hours to install them fully, although at one point it estimated well over 100 hours, so I feel I got away lightly!

The touch screen isn't always as sensitive as it could be, which can be a bit of a pain.

I can't get my voice control to work from the main map screen, only from the voice control section of the main menu, no matter how 'posh' or otherwise I speak! Wink

3D support seems very sporadic in our area. I've only seen a couple of houses in our area - looking forward to seeing other areas of the country with it in the hope of seeing more capabilities.

So far, I LOVE the screen holder. It actually sticks, and stays stuck. Massive improvement on any other satnav.

  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
Mainly local (journeys of up to an hour) thus far. It's managed to avoid some traffic going into our local big town, and I like the fact that the display on the right shows where delays are likely to be. I also like the icons showing the petrol stations, and the countdowns of distance and time. I have some long (5 hour) journeys coming up in half term which are likely to be nightmares, so looking forward (as much as possible) to trying TomTom out then and seeing if s/he can avoid the expected delays

It recalculates quickly when I deliberately go off course, rather than thinking and just shouting at me to turn around (or crashing, like a previous sat nav).

Long, but summary of my first week with tommy Grin

What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?

Really good size.

Extremely disappointed there is no case or AC charger, I wouldn't have bought one if these had not been included.
Graphics and screen are lovely compared to my ancient TomTom one. The holder is good and fits well.
Hate the charger plugging into the holder, and hate the cigarette lighter adaptor thingy, should plug straight into USB port, but then it doesn't connect to traffic

How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?

Set up was quite easy but extremely slow, it was plugged in from 5:30 ish Wednesday night until 7:45 Thursday morning and on the pc it said 87% but TomTom said complete. So I just unplugged it.
So far its been fine.

What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?

Not one of my usual trips on the first day, but one I know most of the options, it took me the way I would have gone anyway and I got stuck in roadworks

Going from school to work it tried to make me go in the actual wrong direction on the main road ie heading towards Newcastle and away from Ashington, where I work. Rather embarrassingly this is not true. TomTom was right Blush it shaves about 5 mins of the journey

i haven't been any where unusual or unknown yet, but it has picked up a few shorter routes I had no idea existed.

General thoughts so far

Voice control very hit and miss. You really have to shout very loudly

The address recognition is very poor both by typing and VR, if you don't have a post code you are stuffed

DH is desperate to get his hands on it but he appears to be working 24/7 atm. There may be more feedback when he has a go as he is very fussy about navigation devices

PuzzleRocks · 15/10/2014 09:53

I have previously used a basic four year old Tom Tom. I've always liked the brand. First impressions; it looked like a slick smartphone, quite plain and simple, which is what I like, the box also included a cigarette USB charger, power cable and bracket to attach to the windscreen. On looking at the bracket I immediately thought that the design is much better and would be much easier to use. On first using it I was right, much better.

Powered up the sat nav and plugged it into my laptop to make sure it had the latest software. Fourteen hours to download!!! Left it overnight but by morning only 73% downloaded. Couldn't wait for it to fully download as I had a trip that day and I was keen to use it.

Jumped in the car, attached the bracket, clicked the sat nav to the holder. There is a 6" screen version and I was relieved I didn't have that. At 5" when in the car, it is pretty big. Was a little concerned that it was going to obscure my view (by the way, I'm not someone who places in the middle of the windscreen, it has to be right hand corner by the A pillar) Fully connected and turned it on. Was presented with a beautiful clear screen. It was very intuitive to use. Easily found the menu to enter the postcode, you can also search under street name or place. Had a look through some of the other options, Voice Control, very nice touch, also the option to plan alternative routes, which worked very well. On our way. First thing that struck me was how clear the instructions were, giving the road number and also the road name. The unit displays quite a lot of information but never did the screen feel cluttered or get in the way of doing what it should, show you the direction you should be going in.

After a few more trips I have started to trust the 'alternative' routes feature, it does work.

Trips so far:-
London - Hertfordshire
London - Birmingham

Upcoming Trips:-
London - Newcastle-under-Lyme
London - Southampton
London - Reading
London - Stoke on Trent
London - Blackburn

My feelings so far are that I might consider purchasing if reasonably priced, but I would like to get a few of the above journeys under my belt first. Will report back.

ChippingInLatteLover · 15/10/2014 10:08

Mimsy if you turn VR on, it will work from the map screen. However, when you turn TomTom off next time you turn it on, you have to turn VR on again. Apparently you need to let it go to sleep, rather than actually turning it off if you want to keep the VR on all the time. (Hope that makes sense).

Floral thanks :) I have actually tried that a few times, but it doesn't actually turn VR on unless I shout at it. I'll keep trying when it's not so busy.

chickensandbees · 15/10/2014 11:12

In terms of your first impressions...

  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?

Thought it looked really good, very clear big screen. Turned it on and it recognised where we were in my house straight away. The old one would not get a signal indoors and took minutes to get one outside and then often lost it on the journey.

  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
Really easy to get started although downloading the updates took ages and took me over by braodband limit for the month. But very easy to set up, it is quite intuitive, you just need to play with it for a bit to find where the Voice activation is, the setting etc. But the basics you can do straight away.
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
I have done my normal work route, via childcare destinations. It recognised the short cuts I already use which my old sat nav didn't like and has even introduced me to a new shortcut.

I have done one long motorway journey 2-3hours each way. It was great as it advised a traffic problem ahead and although there was no diversion it told me how long it was for so I knew in 2 miles it would be clear which was very reassuring. It also calculated correctly how long the delay would mean in terms of time delay.

I have got the voice activation started and it can be tricky getting it to recognise places I say but if you persevere it gets there eventually and Go Home works well. It is good not to have to touch it a type in destinations whilst travelling.

Overall I really like it and would defintiely recommend it to people.

- What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
It scared the life out of me and I almost dropped it! I accidentally turned it on when getting it out of the packet and it started making noises. Once I’d gotten over the initial surprise, I was impressed by the substantial build and the responsiveness of the touch screen. I was a little disappointed by the lack of case or sleeve for it, however. I’ve since made it a little pouch to protect the screen from scratches, with the added advantage that it doesn’t look like a satnav box.

- How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
I didn’t bother reading any instructions or watching the initial tutorial until later on, but I managed to get the TomTom to set up a home location and get started with programming a destination. So it all seems pretty intuitive! I later went back to read the instructions and watch the tutorial and learnt a few new tricks, so it’s worth doing.

The initial update took a long time, but I was anticipating that and did it during the evening. I kicked it off after dinner and it took until bedtime! My computer now regularly reminds me there is another new update, but I’m a bit confused over whether the 4 x per year is limited to map changes or updates? I’ll plug it in again anyway when we get the free voice code.

The holder in the car works fine, it hasn’t fallen off yet! Placing/removing the TomTom is very easy. I’d like an optional little sticky clip thing I could attach to the side of my dashboard to hook the wire into in order to direct it down one side rather than over the top of my control console, but that’s just getting picky.

- What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
Lots of rush hour journeys into and out of a big city centre, and last weekend we headed on a journey to a place we’d never been before that was about an hour away. Next weekend we’re making a 6 hour round trip over two days to a place we’ve only visited once, so it’ll be interesting to see the route it takes us for that!

For the commuting journeys, I can already see the efficiency of the traffic management – particularly for the evening homeward journey when traffic is particularly bad! It’s sent us a huge variety of routes, some more successful than others but usually getting us home about 5-10 minutes faster than before and much quicker on gridlock days! For that reason alone, I love it. Grin

Other comments:

Voice
Serena is generally pretty good and much better than some other alternatives, but she has an issue with ‘ey’ at the end of words that is getting a bit grating. For example we get “Wetherb-uh”, “Puds-uh” and “Burl-uh” instead of “Wetherb-ee”, “Puds-ee” and “Burl-ee”.

I like that it doesn’t shout “Recalculating!” at you when you miss a turning or otherwise ignore the instructions. It just quietly does it.

For voice activation, I’m getting the hang of it now but I have a looong dashboard so the device sits quite far away and I have to shout to make myself heard by it – not ideal with a sleeping baby in the back!

When I was on the motorway the TomTom would occasionally ask me whether a road works speed camera was still there, but it asked me after we’d passed it. Would be useful to ask a few moments earlier so I can see and have it possible to voice respond.

Controls
They all make sense, but I’d prefer to see “My Places” in the first menu or an 8 grid so My Places appears straight away, as that’s what I use the most and I have to scroll across at the moment.

I’d also like an easier option to set the number of people in the car. We have a few 2+ lanes near us and there is an option buried in settings about whether to use these, but sometimes one of us is driving alone and it’d be easier to have a quick option to flip between 1 person in the car to 2+.

From a parenting point of view, I’d like an option to ‘stretch’ a journey to fill the time available. i.e. I can add 5/10/15 minutes to the arrival time and the satnav can then direct me on a scenic route to extend the trip a bit, while still avoiding traffic. Useful for nap extension when you have a baby that insists on sleeping only when the car is in motion and wakes the moment that it stops!

Routes
On the whole, the routing has been mostly fine. However we did have a bit of a disaster in busy traffic yesterday where the TomTom tried to send us down a back alley! Back Burley Lodge Terrace (Leeds), for your information. It’s an access alley for the back of a row of terraces. You could barely get a mini down there if it was clear and it was completely blocked with peoples bins/bikes/etc stored outside their houses.

I’ve noticed as well that it’s not terribly good at judging traffic speed on the roads with 2+ lanes. We’ve tested it a few times and usually the 2+ roads are quicker and easier routes than the one it suggests, if you can use the faster lane.

The top and bottom of the M606 also had some issues. The bottom is missing a lane in the direction when you come from the West, making it a bit confusing about where you need to be. The top of the M606 meanwhile sent us round the roundabout to turn right, rather than using the empty filter lane that cuts underneath.

When Stanningley Road becomes Stanningley-By-Pass also has an issue. It says “Stay Right and Take the Turning” or similar, just as you reach the turning to Bramley on the left. Being a big dual carriageway, there is no junction on the right so it’s confusing about what it wants you to do!

Out of curiosity, does the TomTom take into consideration school locations when routing? I have a ‘2 sides of a square’ situation near my house, one side of which has a school but is a fractionally shorter route. I’ve noticed that TomTom sends me that side unless it’s school drop off or pick up time – even when there is no traffic.

Parking/Supermarkets
Paused at traffic lights, I attempted to use the parking option towards the end of a journey last week, expecting it to find the one (or maybe list a few options) at my destination and direct me there. What it actually did was zoom right out, lose my route and show me parking all over the city. Not what I wanted when I was still busy following the instructions! Fortunately I was able to follow street signs for a bit and DH cancelled parking and went back into the route guidance.

Could be we just need more practice on how to use it, however. Will experiment again next weekend.

WarriorOne · 15/10/2014 11:22

What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?

It looks good, easy enough to plug in to computer and get started. I didn't realise straightaway that there was a power feed into the back of the holder, so was initially a bit puzzled as the feed directly into the TomTom is covered when in the holder. But it only took a moment to figure it out. I'm not bothered that there wasn't a plug, I've got plenty of other plugs with USB sockets in the house that I could use, but I do think a case should be included at that price.

The holder is good, much easier to get on and off the windscreen than my current TomTom, and appears to fix more securely. I can click the unit in very easily, took a while to get the knack of getting it out.

It would be good to be able to have the option to set the device for left handed users.

The on/off button doesn't seem to be so great for me.

  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?

Fine using a Mac, although when I first went online with it, it wasn't immediately obvious that Macs are supported. It took a couple of hours to do the first updates, but only a few minutes for any since then. I had to set up another TomTom account for this one though, as I didn't want to remove my existing device from my account - why can users have only one device per account? It's not long since I bought a year of map updates for my old one, and I'm going to pass that on to someone else, but I will continue to update it for them. Without two accounts I can't do that.

It was easy to add most addresses, but the TomTom couldn't find my house - it's been here for five years! - and it seems to have problems with postcodes that start with two characters not three; when I put in a G4 postcode, it gave me an address in another country.

The log in option at the start doesn't stay on screen very long, so I assumed I was automatically logged in for a few days; so my first journeys weren't with TomTom services. It was only when I had some more time to have a read of the full manual (still haven't got through the whole thing yet!) that I realised.

  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
The daily commute/school drop off and pick up. Pretty impressed with the traffic info, the clear screen, and voice control. I'm heading off for a few days today, so it will be good to try it out in different places. There's a bit of the A1 that I know is almost always snarled up, so I'm hoping it will find me a quicker route.

Other observations

Voice control - good - it would be really good if there was a way to access 'my places' via voice control.

Installed voices - absolutely fine, nice to have a choice. I think it would have been nice just to have been given a promo code for any voice from the premium selection, but I'm not too bothered (I just don't like Stephen Fry!).

Really clear screen, very few problems using the touch screen.

Pretty accurate so far re arrival times, traffic delays, routes, etc.

I would expect a basic case to be supplied for the price - I bought one from Amazon for a few pounds.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed so far. Thanks for giving me one to try out!

ChippingInLatteLover · 15/10/2014 11:45

Warrior

it would be really good if there was a way to access 'my places' via voice control

There is.... (C&P from the other thread)

to navigated to a save place i.e. “My Places” the command is “Display My Places” and then you can say the specific place e.g. “Go to Nick’s House” if one of your places was saved as such. To learn more about the varied voice control options please refer to page 68-71 of the user manual here: bit.ly/1CgkODD"

WarriorOne · 15/10/2014 11:50

Thank you Chipping - I haven't got that far through the manual yet! Thanks

ChippingInLatteLover · 15/10/2014 11:51

Manual? There's a manual?

Grin

The threads are a less 'dry' way of picking it up :)

PolyesterBride · 15/10/2014 14:58
  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
Good. It looks good and the screen, menus, layout etc seem easy to understand and use straightaway. The way the satnav fits into the holder is good and I like the way you attach it to the screen. So much easier than my old Garmin.
  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
Very easy. You just go through selecting the options and away you go. I haven't needed to attach it to a computer yet - not sure why I would need to. It took me a while to work out how to attach it to the windscreen (using the lock thingy - the Garmin is more like a sunction sticky thing) but once I worked that out, it was fine. Would have liked a manual though! I can't follow visual-only instructions.
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
I have done the school run, my journey to work (in town) and local journeys like to the hospital and the swimming pool.

I really like the way the satnav works and the maps are clear and easy to see. I discovered today you can accept an alternative route by just saying 'yes' which I thought was really good. I am also impressed with the traffic function. It really is helpful.

I though it would send me on all sorts of weird routes but today I went a way I had never been before and it did seem quicker.

Agree with whoever said the Australian man has to have some alternative punchlines because the 'don't let the seagulls steal your chips' thing gets old very quickly!

Definitely need a case. Don't see the need for an AC adaptor - surely it's always plugged in and charging?

Overall I really like it. My only gripe would be that it doesn't know a lot of places. Eg our local swimming pool - no matter what permutations of its name we put it, it just didn't know it. It has been there for decades.

stealthsquiggle · 15/10/2014 18:12

I have discovered a major downside - I used it today for the first time with DD in the car and it means I get lectured every time I go over the speed limit! Is there a way to turn that off, I wonder or do I just have to drive slower?

lougle · 15/10/2014 18:43

I found another issue today. There is a clock display on the top right corner. I thought that was the time, then got confused when it seemed to drift. It turns out (of course) that it's an ETA. Without a normal time clock to compare, I don't think that is helpful. I can't trust it because how do I know that the current time it's basing it on is correct?

So, I think it either needs both the current time and the ETA, or just the ET in minutes.

dramaqueen · 15/10/2014 18:44

Well today it was a mixture of brilliant and awful. Trip 70 miles to Oxford and I knew I'd have to go the back roads. It kept telling me the traffic was stationary, which I knew because I was sitting in it, and offered an unrealistic alternative. I turned down the back roads and it re-calculated that I would be there 3 minutes quicker than the original route. So why didn't it give me that route in the first place? It is fairly pointless having it if I have to know to start down the back roads before it picks it up.

Having slagged it off, coming home in the foul weather it gave me a couple of sensible alternatives which I hadn't thought of. But I can't find out how to get these displayed without going through the menu. They are still displayed too quickly and if you're driving in the rain and dark, having them pop up for a few seconds is not long enough.

dramaqueen · 15/10/2014 18:46

Lougle completely agree about the clock. I thought I was late for the train the other day and then realised it was the ETA, but didn't know what time it really was.

dramaqueen · 15/10/2014 18:47

You also can't use VR to give it a postcode, you need a street name and town. God, I've had enough of being in the car with it today!

HeySoulSister · 15/10/2014 18:51

My initial impression of Tom Tom Go 500 was that it looked quite basic. I have never seen a satnav before so have nothing to compare to. It worked fine and is easy to navigate but the length of time it took for the updates seemed too long.

How easy was it to set up... With exception to the updates, I found it quick and v easy. All seems to run smoothly for me

Journeys so far have just been mundane local stuff. Won't get a chance to fully 'road test' Tom Tom til half term. So far so good tho

Floralnomad · 15/10/2014 18:51

We went on a longer trip today to Tilbury Fort ,we had never been before I programmed it using VR and came home using VR ,it was brilliant . It told me how long to expect to sit in the queue on the Dartford bridge and got it about right . No problems so far for us ,DH is studying the manual and is going to try some new things with it at the weekend .

helenthemadex · 15/10/2014 18:59

What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500? It looks quite stylish

  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom? It was easy enough to set up and use, but having had a TomTom sat nav before helped. A bit of information in the box would be helpful.
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom? I have used it every day to travel to work and a few other places.

Other comments :

Nice clear display and the information is arranged well on the screen.

It seems quicker to respond with the position displayed on the screen when you go round a roundabout. This has always been a bugbear with me.

It re-programmes itself quickly when you take a different route than planned.

The maps cover all of Europe and just to test it out I also planned a journey to Vladivostok on the east coast of Russia. It took a few minutes but it succeeded. I don’t think that I will be driving there though.

In terms of your first impressions...

  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
It looks very smart and 'feels' expensive. I love the weight of it and the big screen makes it very easy to read. A cover would be handy to keep it from getting scratched but I've got plans to crochet something to do this!
  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
It was relatively easy although did take a long time to charge up enough to use unplugged.
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
We have used it on our school run and also in our search for a new house. It was particularly useful to be able to programme the addresses we wanted to visit in the house before taking the sat nav into the car. The traffic avoidance feature was very useful as we were able to avoid sitting in a queue for 1.5 hours simply by taking the suggested alternative route - much preferable with three kids in the back! We will be using it again this weekend on more house viewing excursions and also over half term when visiting my inlaws in Devon.

Place marking, back when on laptop...

CMOTDibbler · 15/10/2014 21:10

DH took Serena to Sheffield today. He says that the lane indication was much better than on other sat navs, and he was impressed by the accuracy of the ETA over a 2hr 30 journey with several traffic pain points
