This thread is for the MNers who've been trying out the TomTom GO 5000.

Below are some questions to get you started but please feel free to add other comments too.

In terms of your first impressions...

  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

Thanks,

I discovered a really good thing on the Sat Nav. Sorry if anyone else has found and mentioned this (Ive not RTT). Near me there is some roadworks on the dual carriageway as they are widening it to make it a motorway so instead of a speed limit of 70 it has been reduced to 50 with average speed cameras. The Sat nav tells me my average speed for that area (Its about 15 miles long). I was rather impressed by this.

IAmAPaleontologist · 18/10/2014 14:40

Right then, it is finally the weekend. Sorry for slight lack of feedback. 13 hour shifts plus commute.

What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?

It have never had another satnav to compare it to. Design seems fine, bit big if you are not supposed to be keeping it in the car and need to slip it into your bag but not huge. Screen is really clear, graphics are good. I need to sdjust the automatic switching from night to day colours though as I almost had a heart attack when it suddenly flared up into daytime brightness while I was driving!

Like others I was disappointed that there was no case or at least a soft pouch to put it in. The lack of plug for charging is a bit daft too really given that when battery is dead it takes so long to charge. Mine is currently in my glove box completely depleted as I don't like having it plugged in while I'm driving because where my socket is it means I snag the wire when changing gear. So how am I supposed to charge it?

  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?

To just get driving it is fairly easy. A bit more in the way of instruction would be great though. There was a link on the original thread at some point to the instruction book in PDF so I've saved that. Where else is the link to that though? I don't have time to be searching around the TomTom website to find out how to use it, I was device and instruction booklet that I can keep in the glove box for if I need it.

Getting it linked to the computer was more problematic as mine did not install properly first time so even though I correctly downloaded the mydrive thingy it didn't link up. The FAQs on the subject didn't seem to cover the problem that I could find so I had to contact customer services who to be fair sent a comprehensive reply and instructions on uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers which worked but of course I had to wait a couple of days for the response. My parents have a satnav and even with the instructions I was given I doubt they would have been able to manage it. I don't think they would have been able to manage it even with a fully functioning installation system and my mother is in the 50-60 bracket and uses computers/internet fairly well.

I can't get the voice recognition to work. If I select it from the menu then it works in that I can tell it to display places and select one or I can say "drive home" but once it is driving somewhere then it stops listening to me again so I can't do anything else. I can't just hop in the car and use "Hello TomTom" and tell it where to go. Doesn't work. If anyone can help me out with that then that would be great. I don't turn it off, just sleep mode and all that gubbins.

I think the menu set up is a bit poor, surely "my places" should be among the buttons on the first screen? It seems a fairly labourious process to choose your destination be it by searching or selecting off a list of saved places or routes.

  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?

I have been on a trip to a study day in an unknown location. TomTom was a lifesaver as I got there to discover I had been given the wrong location and I would never have got from unknown location 1 to unknown location 2 by myself. As it was I got there easily and I wasn't even late!

I've been on my usual commute to placement too though if I'm honest I didn't bother with TomTom yesterday. I was not driving at peak times and it just got annoying someone telling me which way to go on a route I drive all the time and know well. I will however use it for the same commute next week when I have a couple of days doing short shifts and travelling at rush hour to see what the traffic function makes of it.

I am at times dubious about alternative routes. I have been taken on very, very minor roads. it there a way of comparing routes or seeing what other routes are available and choosing one to use? Given that the arrival time is constantly updated it is difficult to tell if I would have got somewhere faster by using more main roads than the little roads. Coming home the other day from usual commute I was told to go on a loop round the back of town. That is a good route in teh day with heavy traffic through town and was the route of choice when there were night time road closures a couple of weeks ago but at 9pm mid week is categorically not the fastest way. It is longer, it has more traffic lights, it has various zebra crossings at which you have to stop to let hoards of students cross the road and I know for fact it is slower 99% of the time. Dh and I have often left the same location to drive home in different cars and taken different routes. I always go the main route and I always win.

I am growing used to serena and her annoying way of saying road numbers. I tried other voices out but they don't use the road names/numbers so are more difficult to follow.

At the moment I'm not convinced as an every day gadget but am very pleased with it for going to unknown places. Time will tell once I've tried it out at peak times.

Marymaymay · 18/10/2014 17:57

Loving the new Tom Tom, was able to use it straight out of the box. So much easier than relying on my phone. Voice recognition seems to work well for me. I struggled with linking it to the computer but it's old and got it working via a work laptop in the end. I've used it to and from work, also on visits that I do with work. It gave a good alternative route when one of the main roads was closed due to an accident. I've not downloaded the voice as I don't think I could deal with Stephen Frys voice on a permanent basis.
Seems like a great product, not sure I would buy thought given the price...

lougle · 18/10/2014 18:25

Hmm. Having used it in DH's car, the cable clip doesn't fit the air vent grills on his car. Perhaps a little springy bulldog clippy affair would work better.

alemci · 18/10/2014 18:31

What cable catcher?

IAmAPaleontologist · 18/10/2014 19:28

There is a cable clip?

alemci · 18/10/2014 19:56

sorry - clip but still clueless

VeryStressedMum · 18/10/2014 20:04

My first impression of the TomTom 5000 is that it looked sleek and the screen was a good size.
I would have liked a case included especially considering the price of the TomTom (you can buy a suitable case from Amazon for little over a fiver so it wouldn't be that dear to include it), no plug to charge it in the house but you can charge it in the car whilst it's in use so it won't run out of battery power mid journey.

Set up was very easy. When you switch the Sat nav on it takes you through a set up which was very straight forward.
An instruction booklet would have been handy but from the bit of paper with the drawings I gathered that I should connect the Sat nav to my computer. The computer recognised the device straightaway and it set up within a few minutes although on the computer I tried to create a new account not realising I had already created an account on the actual device when setting it up.

The updates took ages, the time flicked from 2 hours to 8 hours to 12 hours...but in the end it updated in just over 3 hours. I went out and left it updating so it was fine.

The touch control buttons are easy to use and its quite clear what they are for. I set 'home' to my home address and its great when using the voice control that I can just say 'go home' and it will direct me to my house.

I have used it on my usual journeys to school, the shops, to friends houses etc and it does what it says on the tin and directs me to where I want to go.
I'm not sure how the live traffic feature is supposed to work but it didn't seem to notice the traffic I hit and didn't offer an alternate route.
The petrol station feature is good and will be very handy when I am somewhere I am not familiar with.
However I don't seem to have anything on the screen that is in 3D which I'm quite disappointed about as I was looking forward to seeing it. Not sure if it only works in big cities like London or if it should work anywhere...I had sort of hoped it would it would show in 3D my exact surroundings, but it probably doesn't work like that.

Also I was under the impression it should tell me what lane I should be in which it doesn't, even when I was on a 3 lane road. It did tell me to turn right so maybe it assumed I should know I should be in the right lane.

The holder however is fab, it stays on the window and I love how the charger goes into the back of the holder rather than the device itself So it can be left in there and you just need to click the device in and out (I didn't realise this initially and thought it was a massive design flaw and it wouldn't charge whilst in the holder..).

I'm need to take one of the children somewhere I have never been before this week and I'm glad I have the TomTom but I'm nervous and I hope that it gets me there. I have never driven somewhere unfamiliar using only the directions of a Sat nav. I hope I can get the lane recognition feature working as that's one of the things I get most nervous about, that I'm not in the right lane.

It's a great little Sat nav but, apart from the voice control, none of the special features seem to work, so at the moment I can't see how it justifies the price or why I should buy this one over one that is half the price, but hopefully I can sort those niggles out.

VeryStressedMum · 18/10/2014 20:08

Also, a minor annoyance, but when I start driving it doesn't start giving me directions until I'm halfway down my road, then she comes to life but sounds like it's in the middle of a direction iyswim..not major but it annoys me...

VeryStressedMum · 18/10/2014 20:11

It would also be handy to be able to turn the volume down when it's giving directions while driving, is this possible?

lougle · 18/10/2014 20:39

There's a little c shaped clip on the cable, so you can clip the cable to the air vent to stop it dangling about.

Floralnomad · 18/10/2014 21:13

You can turn the volume up and down or mute it by using the voice control .

Sparklingbrook · 18/10/2014 21:14

I am old fashioned. A proper volume control button would be great.

MimsyBorogroves · 18/10/2014 22:47

Cable clip? I haven't noticed that. Would be useful...

We had a lot of minor delays in town today - was amazed at the accuracy (40 seconds? Yep! 2 minute? Yep!) Also got to see the 3D in a bit more glory.

I enjoyed how excited Stephen became by our going onto a motorway, but I'm glad the premium voice upgrade was free. We were tempted to pay £7.50 for Brian Blessed too (DS2 loves Grampy Rabbit and Flash Gordon) but I've only heard Stephen say 4 or 5 phrases.

mumnosbest · 18/10/2014 23:13

Ah found it, the thread not the TomTom, will add my feedback soon.

DoctorGilbertson · 19/10/2014 00:06

Did anyone see the Doctor Who trailer for next week?

Tardis
Lookslikeimstuckhere · 19/10/2014 00:22

Yes! Perhaps he can get Serena's VR to function for one and all...

IAmAPaleontologist · 19/10/2014 07:47

Reading some of the feedback i think some people ate confused by what the 3d is supposed to be. When the map swings around on the screen to stay in the direction of travel and the arrow is moving sort of forwards into the screen then that is the 3d. 2d is map that looks like a Google maps print out they doesn't change direction when the car turns etc.

SpottedTent · 19/10/2014 09:57
  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
I thought it looked good, a world away from my seven year old TomTom! Love how easily it sits in it's cradle and that the cable attaches to that rather than the device. I did get a bit annoyed with the update so I gave up because of how long it was taking and because I needed to use it.
  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
In the end, I put it in my car and away I went. Incredibly easy in that respect, but I did find the website confusing for some reason. That could just be me... I particularly enjoy that I can put in the name of a store with the town rather than needing to know a specific road. I was hoping it would be like Google maps in that way, so very pleased so far.
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
Getting to work, work related journeys, long trips... It has shown me a faster way of getting to work! I'm waiting to get stuck in traffic now to see how that feature works.

Overall, I like it. Haven't sorted out the voice recognition yet. I deliberately ignored an instruction and was quietly pleased at the super fast redirection.

VeryStressedMum · 19/10/2014 10:06

It's supposed to have 3 maps and I should see (according to the tomtom website) buildings and landmarks in 'stunning' 3D. There's a picture on the back of the box which shows buildings around you in 3D. Mine doesn't do this. It does show the arrow moving along the route but the surroundings are just flat like a map..no 3D buildings.

It's supposed to have advanced lane guidance where it should clearly show in 'realistic' 3D which lane to take at key junctions. Mine hasn't done thus but maybe I haven't been at a key junction.

A long my routes it doesn't show me any points of interest either. Ok there's not a great deal of interest along my route but it doesn't even tell me where the petrol stations are, which it is supposed to I think...

ilovemonstersinc · 19/10/2014 10:28

Ive done my initial few questions but also wanted to add that the old tomtom would actually say take a this direction at the roundabout but this just says take whatever at the end of the road Confused which can be confusing.

The vr still doesnt work but love the traffic updates. We now use it almost whenever we use the car.

How and when do we add review to mn review page thingy??

asuwere · 19/10/2014 16:08
  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
Looks nice; large screen and very clear. Not a lot in the box though for the money - like others have said, I expected a case to be included.
  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
Initially, I set it up without the computer and it was very easy. Quite straight forward when switching it on the first time and it just walked me through it - liked that there was a quick tutorial as well. I'm not used to using a touch screen but it is quite intuitive and very simple for even me to use!

Unfortunately, not quite so impressed with the simplicity when I tried to to connect it to computer! I attached it to my netbook at first - to be fair, my netbook is a little old and very slow. Had a problem downloading the drivers at first as it was so slow so I tried on DH's PC. Drivers installed easily and had MyDrive set up but PC could not recognise that the TomTom was plugged in. Tried several USB ports, restarting, uninstalling drivers etc. Followed all the help sections but it wouldn't work. Eventually, after several google searches, DH discovered that it won't work as he has 64 bit Windows and it will only work with 32 bit Windows (not 100% sure what this means but basically, it his PC using something which TomTom doesn't like!)
So, went back to my netbook, finally got drivers installed, have MyDrive set up but again, will not recognise when I plug in the TomTom - have followed all the guidance, checked everything and cannot get it to work. The USB is working as the TomTom is charging but MyDrive keeps asking me to connect the device. And now every time I put my Netbook on, it again pops up and asks me to connect a device which is slightly annoying.

So, I have not been able to update the device properly and sadly, I can't download Stephen Fry - although I did purchase him and the process for purchasing was very straight forward.

  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?

I've used it for several local regular journeys - 1 of which it gave me an alternative, which I was aware of but hadn't thought about it being quicker. It turns out it is slightly quicker but it's not a great road and I suspect it would be much slower if the weather was bad. It doesn't take the weather/driving conditions into consideration.
I used it yesterday to go somewhere I'd never been - it was in the middle of nowhere but TomTom still got us there safe and sound. I liked the early notifications as without them, we may have easily missed a few turns.
A few times I have changed my mind about where I'm going or added a detour without changing the destination and I like that it doesn't shout/moan that I'm going the wrong way, it just recalculates quietly. Great when you suddenly remember to do something but don't want it to forget the original destination!

I've never used SatNav before but I am quite enjoying it. It really is simple to use. As others have mentioned, it does mean that DS1 can sit and tell me when I'm going too fast - might be a good thing but not sure! He likes it anyway!

The window mount is really easy to use and seems pretty secure. Unfortunately, it doesn't sit in a great position in my car but that's more to do with the car than the TomTom.

I don't like that the plug goes in the back of the mounting bracket as it's quite difficult to get to and means that I have to either take the whole bracket off the window when leaving the car or leave a loose wire hanging down the dashboard.

Nicename · 19/10/2014 16:16

First impressions - 'ooh isn't it small and light?'

Setting up - very easy peasy, although I would like a 'simple setup for numpties' like you get with phones and a quick troubleshooting guide.

Journeys - all pretty local so far although I did use it for a relative when they were stuck on the motorway and they called to see if we could work out an alternative route! Short journeys are very good - we are city central so there are lots of road works and traffic jams, and James works put the best route. So far the times and routes have been pretty accurate.

The voice recognition hates me, or my accent, so I have up!

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 19/10/2014 18:16

We played sat nav races today in DH's car (he has an inbuilt system - tbh it's always been a bit rubbish). TomTom won and shaved 5 mins off the journey.

Made me happy. Easily pleased

BettyMoody · 19/10/2014 18:18
  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?

Nice size and wide clear screen - better than my old one.

  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
Not so compatible for MAcs sadly and took a long time to get going
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?
cross county ones where there are lots of differnet potential routes so it is very useful. Also ones around a major national traffic blackspot/Holiday route
