This thread is for the ten lucky MN families who are going on a Butlins holiday over the next few months.

Butlins say “We have been providing family breaks for nearly 80 years, and although we’ve changed with the times, many people still believe that we’re old fashioned and run down. We’re looking to change these negative perceptions and show Mumsnetters that we’re a 21st century holiday destination, which offers brilliant family breaks at great value for money”

Testers are visiting the Skegness, Bognor Regis and Minehead resorts – check back to this thread to find out how they are getting on.
We have asked testers to add feedback at least twice - before they go and when they get back home.

Non testers: Butlins would love to know what makes the perfect family holiday in the UK. Everyone who adds a comment will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £200 John Lewis voucher, so that they can get stocked up for the holiday season.

Please note: comments may well be used by Butlins on social media and elsewhere. Your MN name will not be used.

A perfect UK family holiday MUST be weather proof.

rupert23 · 30/10/2014 09:35

Uk holidays are great if the weather is good. i would like to find a place with beautiful scenery and walks. A heated swimming pool and plenty of free activities for kids of all ages to keep them busy. Also good affordable food nearby and good play facilities and accomodation. I have not been to Butlins with my family so will be interested in what is said about it .

Jims · 30/10/2014 14:22

Plenty of nearby activities for if the weather isn't great are a must for uk holidays with our small kids. We go camping in the UK and have been really lucky the last couple of years. We've been to cornwall and there are loads of NT places there for days out that won't cost us an admission price.

AlexanderinaTheGreater · 01/11/2014 15:31

Non-tester - ingredients for a perfect family holiday in the UK for us involves getting away from home, preferably away from internet access, being somewhere with enough activities to keep our 3 year old occupied but not so much going on we never relax, close to sources of good food and drink, and a log fire.

randdom · 02/11/2014 09:00

The perfect UK holiday for my family at the moment would involve nice accommodation where there was enough space to be together as a family and eat together. Activities for us to do as a family and for my little boy to do tailored to his age and needs. Places that we could eat out with good food where people don't roll their eyes because you bring a young child...And maybe.. just maybe the chance for me to sneak off and do something for just me for a few hours.

VirtuallyThere · 03/11/2014 20:21

Non tester.

Not too far to get to.
Things to do that don't cost money - e.g included activities, country walks, etc.
Optional activities so can be active or lazy.
Available self catering facitilites for some meals.

I like Butlins for a fun active weekend and we have been with our son every year for the last four years.

Thegentlemonkey · 03/11/2014 20:28

Non-tester: perfect for me would mean lovely holiday accommodation to relax in the evenings as it's not so easy to get out with little ones, & action packed exploring adventure filled days that the kids will love too.

Tester here , very sorry did not see this thread at the time . We went to minehead on the 23rd June

Before you go

  • Where are you going? How far it is from your home?

minehead, 195miles. 5 hour train and bus journey.

  • Who is in your group?
Myself, husband, 5 daughters and 1 son
  • Have you ever been on a Butlins holiday before?
Yes.
  • What are you looking forward to most? What are the DC looking forward to?
mister maker. And the fun fair. Eldest ones are looking forward to the pool
  • How was the booking process?
Nice and easy
  • What are your perceptions of Butlins?
Fun family holiday, most things are free on site.
  • What made you apply to visit Butlins?

Have not been with all the children and wondered if it could cater for a large age range

When you are back

  • Overall opinions from you and others in the family

Children loved the site, little ones liked the little activities and rides throughout the day. Felt very comfortable allowing the older ones roam free and meet us later.

  • Describe your accommodation
Gold 4 bedroom apartment. Bit shabby on the outside and in need of a lick of paint. Nicely decorated inside but as it appears the 4 beds are two 2 beds knocked through, there was a bit of conduit running through and gave an air of bodge-job to it. However the apartment was comfortable, spacious and well equipped.
  • Describe your dining experiences
We had premium dining in our package which was great for giving a wide range of food. However one of our children has multiple food allergies which I was quite concerned about how they would cater for her. However they provided a wide range of suitable food and desserts for her. All in all the food was great and the serving staff were fantastic .
  • Did your break meet or exceed your expectations?

Exceeded it. We had a great time and the children are asking when we can go again.

  • What activities have the kids enjoyed?

Fencing, swimming, the little tikes race track, the bungee jump thing inside the tent.

  • What activities/entertainment did you enjoy as a family?

The pool, the big inflatable pillow, the cinema (dh took the older 4 to see malificent whilst the two little ones napped), MISTER MAKER!!

  • Was there anything that surprised you about your break/Butlins?

The staff were always cheerful. Was amazing to have brilliant customer service the whole break.

How would you rate/ describe...

  • Food
10/10 to cater for our multiple allergy child is not easy, but they managed it. Brilliant .
  • Accommodation
7/10 bit shabby but comfortable
  • Activities
9/10 some activities need booking in advance so advisable to do that as soon as possible.
  • Entertainment
10/10 always something on, the children liked the panto on the first night and adored Mister Maker
  • The Butlins team
10/10 couldn't fault them.
  • Things to do for adults
We didn't really look for stuff for us.
  • Things to do for children
10/10 for the tots, loads to do, And plenty repeated throughout the day so didn't miss anything if little ones were napping. Was still a lot for the older ones to do but not as much as what's normally on.
  • Things to do as a family
8/10 felt like that some of the tots stuff was too far away from the older ones.
  • Would you return/ try out another Butlins resort?

Would love to, and am sure I wouldn't have to persude the family.

  • What did you think about the value for money – especially compared to other family holidays?

As almost everything is included in the price I do feel it's value for money, though it's not cheap by any means. It can be a full on week so for noise sensitive children it may not be ideal.

  • Any other comments?
The beach at minehead is wonderful. It's a beautiful area and I wish we had more time to visit the local attractions as well as the butlins resort. Also be aware that if you are coming by train like we were, the final part of the journey is by bus which is over an hours ride. The nearest mainline station is Taunton.
misdee · 03/11/2014 22:20

Thought I would add a couple of pictures from our week. Hope that's ok.

We're back :)

Dp and I are officially exhausted. The kids were in bed by 7pm this evening. Overall, a pretty fantastic weekend. I wouldn't say I'm a complete convert to Butlins holidays, (though the kids are!!) but I was very pleasantly surprised. The weekend far exceeded my expectations, and I would definitely consider going again depending on a few things.

Here's my thoughts on the weekend. I’d firstly like to say a massive Thank you to Mumsnet for making it possible for us to go. We felt really lucky.

When you are back

- Overall opinions from you and others in the family

Very impressed at the High Standards, excellent organisation, and cleanliness of the resort. DP last went to Barry Butlins as a child in 1977, and he felt that it really was now a very upmarket holiday experience, and vastly different to what he expected. The sheer variety of activities on offer was almost mind boggling, we didn't have a spare minute!

- Describe your accommodation

We really liked the accommodation. We stayed in the Wave hotel, and had a family king size room, with a Balcony that had views across the park, and you could just about see the sea! The kids had their own Submarine themed room, with each bunk having their own lights and TV/DVD player. The room had a door, so it was great to put them to bed, and to then be able to put our feet up and watch a bit of TV at the end of the evening! That's normally difficult when there are 4 of you in a hotel room. The bed was very comfy, and the shower in the bathroom really excellent. Everything was VERY clean...and there was some good towel art going on! We had daily housekeeping included, which you pay extra for, but someone then comes in and cleans your room daily and makes the beds.

- Describe your dining experiences

I thought the Premium Dining package we had was excellent, and really good value for money. The package included Breakfast and Evening meal, and the times you could eat between were really practical...8.30am- 11.00 for Breakfast for example. We could eat at the Deck, which was a self service restaurant and I was really worried that it would be a really horrible queuing experience, a massive bundle for food, and generally like a school canteen but actually it was quite the opposite. Considering the amount of people they got through the door each mealtime, (it must have tipped over 1000), it was a relaxed pleasant way to have dinner, and best of all, as the food was all ready...there was no waiting about with hungry kids. The selection of food was described as 'Awesome' by dd, and it truly was, there was roasts, traditional british food, Chinese, Noodles, a pasta station and a grill, as well as all the chicken nuggets and chips a small boy could want. There were starters and desserts of all sorts, and a really good range of soft drinks. Breakfast was similar, cereal, full english, pancakes, porridge, and a range of cooked to order items. It was all completely unlimited and the kids ate loads. I was on slimming world, and there was lots to choose from, so I was really pleased. The dining package could also be transferred to the other restaurants on the resort, so on the last night we got vouchers to eat at the Beachcomber Inn, and they were very generous with what you could have. DP was able to have steak, and the kids had a nice choice of food, I had a chicken salad, and we just needed to pay for drinks. I thought it was really good value for money. The dining package was £198 for the three days, which covered 6 meals. There was so much food, we didn't bother having lunch as we weren't really hungry..and considering as a family of 4 we generally pay about £45 for a meal out including drinks, we felt this was on a par on what we would have spent. So I thought that the Dining Plan was a really great feature of the stay. All food was fresh, and beautifully served.

- Did your break meet or exceed your expectations?

It really exceeded our expectations. I was quite stressed about it being all a bit tired and grubby, and the food being awful. So we were all really pleasantly surprised. People on the resort were friendly and fairly relaxed.

- What activities have the kids enjoyed?

The kids have loved the shows. They really were the highlight of the holiday for us. We saw a Kids Comedy Act, Scooby Doo, Dick and Dom, Freddie Mercury Tribute, Superslam Wrestling, Lady Gaga Tribute Act and Cirque du Hilarious as well as the Redcoats Dance off, Titan the Robot and a puppet show.

The Superslam wrestling was the highlight of the stay for my ds5 whereas Dick and Dom, and Cirque du Hilarious were for dd11. The shows were messy, and interactive….and had a real end of term feel about them…they were the last of the season and the artists were all relaxed and really up for a laugh. The shows felt effortless and fun. We did need to split up to take the kids to different shows, as they were on at the same time, and the kids are different ages.

Dd went to Club Red, the 9-12 activity club and learnt a dance routine, which she got to perform on the stage in the Skyline pavilion, which she really enjoyed.

- What activities/entertainment did you enjoy as a family?

We all enjoyed our second visit to Splashwater World. The first wasn't great. It was absolutely packed, we went at about 11.30am, and it was really really hard to watch the kids with that many people in there. Each slide had a huge queue, and it was quite stressful. However, they had an early 8.30am swim for hotel guests the following day, and that was much better. It was quieter, (still busy) but much easier with the kids, and slide queuing times were much shorter....we could do the waves without bumping into people! Then as the breakfast times were so flexible, we were able to go and have a leisurely brunch! Splash Waterworld was really great, I thought the selection of slides and things to do in there was brilliant, there was something for all of us. DP was very brave and did the space bowl...and looked very shaken after...DD and I did the master blaster....small yellow boats you ride very fast in tubes... high above the splashworld pools. We absolutely loved that!

- Was there anything that surprised you about your break/Butlins?

I was a bit shocked just how big central stage was! And how many people there were on the resort. I'm not good with crowds, I find holidays like that very stressful…and I actively avoid them…so I was quite apprehensive when we arrived and saw just how many people were there! We avoided areas that were full of slot machines and gaming machines, which were very noisy and busy, and tried to eat at the quieter times, and use the fairground when the weather wasn't so great to avoid the queues. Some things like the Football Coaching for 5-7's I found frustrating, as there were 47 kids, and one football coach, and most of the session was spent organising them all, with only one or two football skills practised and a VERY short game, so that everyone got a chance to have a go. The coach did it superbly, but I felt that really, two coaches and splitting the group in half would have been a bit fairer and more fun for the kids. DS didn't want to go back for a second session.

How would you rate/ describe...

- Food

Outstanding, completely surpassed my expectations. 10/10

- Accommodation

Really great, practical, clean, kid friendly, tired parent friendly! Nice to have a fridge in the room too. A TV for each of my kids avoided arguments as they are both quite far apart in age!

- Activities

An amazing range of activities. We didn't pay or book any extra activities, as there was nothing we particulary wanted to, or had time to do...but there were activities that you could book at an extra cost, but there was a good mix of them with free activities, so I didn’t feel pressured to do them. There were really good indoor and outdoor play areas for the children, and lots to do with regular shows and character appearances throughout the day in the skyline pavilion, as well as the evening shows, and the fairground. There was THE most spectacular firework display on the Saturday night!

- Entertainment

The quality of the entertainment was excellent. All the shows were highly entertaining, and very interactive. The kids loved it all!

- The Butlins team

Staff were really approachable and friendly. Some a bit more than others, but I had no complaints. We didn't quite get the hang of the B-Line passes to start with, but a very nice man took the time to explain how they worked, so all was good.

- Things to do for adults

Make no mistake, this is a holiday for kids! Though DP and I did enjoy ourselves, especially the shows. We did find ourselves wondering what one of the adult weekends might be like...like an 80's weekend, especially now we knew how nice the hotel was and that the food was good etc. There was a nightclub on site, and quiz night, and more adult entertainment later in the evening...but as we had the kids we didn't see any of that. Our main holiday criteria is being able to have a leisurely drink or two while the kids are enjoying themselves, and we were certainly able to tick that box.

- Things to do for children

The kids were beside themselves. They didn't know what to do first! There is a HUGE amount, and the spent a long time using the App and programme for the weekend planning what they wanted to do.

- Things to do as a family

As a family, we really enjoyed the shows, the fairground (note to self: Always check what the ride does before your kids get you to go on it with them) and Splash Waterworld. It was a very family friendly break, and we all got something out of it. We have some great memories, particulary as ds5 won the air guitar competition at the start of the Wrestling on the Saturday night, he’s not stopped talking about that…getting to perform in from of at least 500 people all cheering him! LOL

- Would you return/ try out another Butlins resort?

I'd certainly treat the kids to another weekend at Butlins. They really loved it. I'm not sure about another resort. I looked at Minehead and saw all the chalet style accommodation, and it's absolutely not for me. The hotel was excellent though. I would certainly stay there again. I've looked on the website and some of the lodges and rooms look ok...but how they compare to the hotel I don't know!

- What did you think about the value for money – especially compared to other family holidays?

DP and I have spent a VERY long time discussing this. And actually, we overheard other families discussing the cost of a break in a certain well known resort with a large dome structure, and how much more it cost than Butlins. I was quite shocked to hear how much more it was! I had initially thought that Butlins, at £993, including the £198 dining package and daily housekeeping for our weekend was very expensive. But it appears that was actually a cheaper option compared to other family resorts.

Now that we have been and when we broke the pricing down a bit, it started to look more reasonable...for example, the dining package we thought was excellent value for money. And we saw 5 shows, that were of an incredibly high standard…so if you allowed a £20 ticket cost each, away from Butlins...you'd have paid at least £400 to see all of that, if not more! And of course there’s the convenience of it all being on one site! Then if you add on all the activities, extras, fairground, water world, and it really starts to look not as expensive as first thought.

When we got home I also costed up on the website the identical Halloween weekend for 2015. Though you can 't see all the shows that will be on, an identical break to ours came in at nearly £200 less than the cost of this one...so it clearly pays to book early! I thought that price was very reasonable. And of course, compared to other well known family resorts, that includes your food and lots of actives, that aren't available elsewhere.

One other thing was that we were really pleasantly surprised about was how reasonable the drinks at the bar were, certainly no more than pub prices outside the resort for a couple of pints. I really appreciate that, as there is nothing worse than being somewhere where prices get racked up because you're a captive audience. There were good options for kids drinks too, in plastic cups you could keep, and cheaper refills. The kids liked that, and they were well priced too, at £1.99 each.

- Any other comments?

We paid for B-Line passes - see my first post as to why. They allow you into the shows 15 minutes before the main doors open. They were good, and we did have lovely seats for every show, but it was frustrating to have to queue up and go into each venue an hour before each show and sit and wait. I didn't feel that the queues were policed very well sometimes. Despite being asked not to, lots of families would leave one member to save a place in a queue, and then just before the doors opened, another 20-30 people would turn up and push their way in to the front where their family was...and you'd suddenly find yourself getting further and further back! That was a bit annoying.

Overall though, we had a brilliant weekend. I don’t think the kids are going to stop talking about it for months. We are certainly going to consider going again in the future as I felt that Butlins did offer something for everyone….I’m still very tempted by the 80’s weekend too…much to DP’s horror!

Thanks again. It was fantastic :)

Hello - back from a Halloween break at Bognor Butlins - came back yesterday afternoon.

When you are back

  • Overall opinions from you and others in the family

Exhausting, full on, entertaining break - enjoyable but feel sorry for the kids back at school today, in fact off with a poorly DD which is not surprising

  • Describe your accommodation

Neptune room in the Ocean hotel, so double bed for us (actually two singles pushed together so bump in the middle), sofa bed for one of the DCs in our room, then a separate kids room with twin beds

  • Describe your dining experiences

Premium dining package so breakfast and dinner catered for - ended up eating in the hotel all the time as when we tried to eat elsewhere was told 50 min wait. We and the kids tried really hard to not take more food than could eat, and they only eft things they didn't like, as we havte food waste - but seeing the waste on others tables was really depressing, perhaps signs encouraging people to not take too much in one go and return again and again might help?

  • Did your break meet or exceed your expectations?

Exceeded in some ways, fell short in others

  • What activities have the kids enjoyed?

DS9 loved the Club Red chill out as grateful for time away from his siblings. DD7 and DS5 loved the fairground rides and the craft - we ALL loved the 3D Science show (cost us £25 for the family) and DS9 and DD7 loved the bungee trampoline (£5 each). DD and DS loved the circus skills with the Skyline gang which was free.

  • What activities/entertainment did you enjoy as a family?

In all honesty - other than the DIck and Dom show (we saw the last one of the season - which we all utterly adored, in some ways think DH and I loved more than the kids - our actual favourite was our time away on the beach each day - we made sure we got off site for a walk each day

  • Was there anything that surprised you about your break/Butlins?

Food was better than expected - entertainment varied widely from brilliant to utterly inappropriate (Cirque du Hilarious - see comments below)

How would you rate/ describe...

  • Food 8/10 - on the whole was good, although veggie options not as good as the meat choices. Saying that, not having to think about food for the break was wonderfully restful.
  • Accommodation 7/10 - kids window leaked when it rained and despite reporting twice nothing done (it rained for 2 solid days so their bed was wet), no remote control for kids tv and was stuck on max volume so had to watch tv in our room - they wake at 6am! would be good to fit 3 beds in kids room - perhaps bunk and single bed; door to kids room or at least curtain would be good.
  • Activities

7/10 Good range but was surprised how much they cost - yes some were free but pumpkin carving wsa £5 per child! Good range of physical activities, oldest loved the archery

  • Entertainment

6/10 When good was brilliant - although why Redcoat Show was on in Skyline Pavillion with the awful Cirque du Hilarious in Centre Stage I don't know. We, and several other families, walked out of the Cirque show as as well as being something out of the 70s didn't think the racist, sexist jokes and swearing were suitable family entertainment Really really surprised at Butlins over this - did tweet this to Butlins at the time but no response (although other tweets were replied to)

  • The Butlins team

9/10 Redcoats were all fantastic, think they must be superhuman the length of days they do. Especially Steven and Charlotte and Hazel. Butler was fab - as was reception in our hotel, although as above no one came to sort the window.

  • Things to do for adults

7/10 We didn't have anyone to babysit so we did things as a family only - but other than the spa and evening shows was not aware of any grown up only activities.

  • Things to do for children

8/10 - I felt the 5-8 group was a little to young for my nearly 8 year old - was mainly made up of 5 and 6 year olds. The Club Red chill out was amazing - shame only on once. Loved the road to Wem-Billy - Coach was fantastic and DS5 loved it. They all loved the fair too.

  • Things to do as a family

6/10 - although think this might be unfair as if it hadn't been so wet there would have been rounders. We did the fair together, evening shows, and daytime ones. Also enjoyed bowling. Shame the kayaks and other pool activities were not for whole families.

  • Would you return/ try out another Butlins resort?

No - we found it all a bit too much/full on to be honest. Our best times were walks on the beach each day and mealtimes as we really got to connect as a family. As we both work full time and the kids go to school and childcare our holidays are precious times spent as a family and we all felt this break - whilst being chock full of individual things to do, did not lend itself very well to precious time as a family.

  • What did you think about the value for money – especially compared to other family holidays?

Not great at all, we spent 11 nights in a luxury chalet on a holiday park in the Dordogne last summer for the same cost as 3 nights at Butlins - and we then spent another £100 on activites (we obviously could have not done so but the science show was brilliant fun and one of the kids highlights so so glad we did)

  • Any other comments?

We normally go to smaller caravan type places for holidays, like Haven and Park Resorts, and I think we still would. They are smaller and more intimate and afford for the kids to make friends - there was not just the opportunity for them to mingle on this holiday as it was never the same kids at the activities. It was also overwhelming at times, when it rained the pavillion was heaving and really noisy and full on, you could see kids melting down everywhere. We would, however, love to return for a day trip so we could then leave and calm down for bedtime.

We were surprised at feeling like this, however, we had gone away fully expecting to decide to only do a week's holiday next year and shell out for an inclusive Butlins holiday, and the kids do not want to do it (and we definitely don't).

Fiddlerontheroof · 04/11/2014 10:09

Hello cod, it was really interesting to see your review as we were there the same weekend :)

I agree that Cirque du Hilarious was very near the mark...and there were a couple of moments I squirmed, but it went over my kids heads and we were fairly unbothered, the second half was better than the first....though I did raise eyebrows a bit at burlesque dancing! I can completely appreciate why you left!

Breaking it down, I did think you get what you pay for, but it was still a very expensive weekend! We spent about £100 on extras I would say...forgot to mention that!

And yes, it was full on....I couldn't have done another day! X

Fiddlerontheroof · 04/11/2014 10:19

And I agree, Dick and Dom were brilliant! :)

codandchipstwice · 04/11/2014 10:53

Hello Fiddler was wondering if any other MNetters there. Glad you enjoyed it Smile

Fiddlerontheroof · 04/11/2014 11:03

Hi :) I'm envious you got to the beach, to be fair we live by the sea....but I did find myself craving some time out...it's was all the bloody amusements and coin machines that did my head in!! X

i think butlins already have it when it comes to family friendly holodays. my only gripe with them is that my room my mouse droppings, i mean we left almost immediately after spotting that. we send an email to butlins regarding this but no response. and this was 2yrs ago.

Moogdroog · 06/11/2014 22:33

Non tester - perfect UK family holiday is not too far away. Self catering, with options for sunny day activities and things to rescue a rainy day. Ooh, playgrounds must be in abundance, it seems Hmm

MAsMum · 06/11/2014 23:29

Non tester- To have more wet weather facilities/activities that all members of the family can engage in.ie most UK resorts the wet weather facilities are small and quickly become overcrowded.

To have additional dining facilities where the children are entertained/ given dinner in a room beside/across the hall from the adult restaurant so that the parents can enjoy a delicious 3 course meal safe in the knowledge that the kids are just across the corridor and that they can check on them at any time.

Non- tester. I think as you can't guarantee the weather even in the Summer it helps to be prepared and to know what you are getting/where things are etc. An ideal situation would be something to entertain everybody even if it is miserable outside and good, clean, reasonably spacious accommodation is also a must.

For me the perfect holiday is one where there's something for everyone.

Since having the children, DH and I have swapped our usual fortnight in the sun for more UK breaks that provide activities too.

I love seeing my two boys having fun and being active so any break that can manage that is good. I also like to have a little time to myself so, a pool or spa or even just a quiet coffee shop is also a bonus!

We don't mind when we go away these days so if it's been cold or wet we also like a fire and hot chocolate to end the day warming up.

A perfect family holiday in the UK for us would involve:
Things to do when it rained or the weather was unseasonably warm or cold
Good food - I love eating and would want to be able to either buy high quality produce we could cook or a choice of restaurants with interesting menus. I don't want to smell chips everywhere.
A washing machine & drier/drying rack.
A shower with enough hot water for us to all be able to get ready after a day at the beach/walking & getting dirty.
Either museums or art galleries or gardens to go & visit, I want to see something new/different when I have time.
Ideally dog friendly accommodation with a safe garden but I know it is almost impossible.

If I was staying in a hotel I'd like access to a washing machine & drier if I was staying more than 4 nights, there are 5 of us & there is a limit to how much luggage we can carry for a UK holiday when you need to be prepared for different weather conditions. A really perfect holiday would also have enough space for each of my teens to bring a friend & for them to get on. Am I asking too much now?
