This thread is for the ten lucky MN families who are going on a Butlins holiday over the next few months.

Butlins say “We have been providing family breaks for nearly 80 years, and although we’ve changed with the times, many people still believe that we’re old fashioned and run down. We’re looking to change these negative perceptions and show Mumsnetters that we’re a 21st century holiday destination, which offers brilliant family breaks at great value for money”

Testers are visiting the Skegness, Bognor Regis and Minehead resorts – check back to this thread to find out how they are getting on.
We have asked testers to add feedback at least twice - before they go and when they get back home.

Non testers: Butlins would love to know what makes the perfect family holiday in the UK. Everyone who adds a comment will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £200 John Lewis voucher, so that they can get stocked up for the holiday season.

Please note: comments may well be used by Butlins on social media and elsewhere. Your MN name will not be used.

Perfection for me would include:
Clean, well stocked and safe facilities - A stinky changing room or my child hurting themselves on a jagged edge in a pool something that we would enjoy. Having to root round for loo roll at the club house is never enjoyable either.
Friendly staff - We want to enjoy ourselves, not have someones problems ruin our day
Efficiency - I do not expect to run into problem after problem, it just ruins things

As long as all the above exists then I would be pretty much happy, with regards to facilities, as long as they match what is advertised then I would obviously expect to get what is promised.

I'll be interested to see what the reviewers think, as we have done UK holidays at Centreparcs (EXPENSIVE) - Haven which was cheap, but not nice caravan, and Park Dean in Scotland, which was okay. It would be interesting to hear what Butlins is like these days;
The kids always love a caravan holiday of any description, but if the swimming pool facilities are clean/big/ with lots of slides, that would be a real bonus

sockmatcher · 23/12/2014 23:17

Non tester. Perfect UK holiday. Somewhere with home comforts. I do want washing machine/ drier so I can pack light. Decent pots and pans as we can't afford to eat out every night.

When you are back

  • Overall opinions from you and others in the family
Our overall opinion is very positive. We had a great time, a lovely family getaway. We had to leave on the Sunday night because of being called in unexpectedly, but I was gutted to leave, we had a great time.
  • Describe your accommodation
We were in a gold apartment. The outside looked quite dilapidated and run down compared to the new upgraded ones around us, but the inside was lovely - very comfortable, lovely bedrooms, travel cot set up and beds made for us, and a really well appointed kitchen. Housekeeping came every day, toiletries were provided which was a lovely touch. The only comment I would make was that the kitchen floor was incredibly slippy even when dry, and barefoot and in socks we both nearly went flying. Thankfully we weren't carrying DD at the time.
  • Describe your dining experiences
We were on the premium dining plan, with food court-style dining in a choice of two restaurants - the Yacht Club and The Deck. The Yacht Club was luxurious, comfortable and smaller, but we preferred The Deck, as we felt it was more of the 'Butlins experience'. The food was amazing, there was baby food provided which was great for DD, we loved the taste and the choice available - I'm a fussy eater and yet I found something I liked every day. Breakfast was great, OH was a little disappointed by the pancake bar though, as the pancakes weren't very nice. Again, the choice at breakfast was incredible - a massive selection of cooked breakfast items, the nicest Danish pastries I've ever tasted. One funny sight was everyone at breakfast and dinner walking around with Lazytown cups full of juice, as it cost extra at the bar outside to buy Coke and similar, so everyone just had juice and squash which was freely available.
  • Did your break meet or exceed your expectations?
It exceeded my expectations, we had a wonderful time.
  • What activities have the kids enjoyed?
DD LOVED swimming, the pool was brilliant but the facilities weren't great for families - on arrival you were assigned to a changing area. Each area only had one baby change area that we could find, and when we went to the Baby and Toddler swim session, we had poor DD shivering even though she was wrapped in warm towels, while we waited for baby change area to become free so that we could change her. Families who didn't need the changing table were using the baby change rooms so that they could change as a family, so maybe more baby changing facilities need to be provided. DD also loved seeing the characters like Bob the Builder, she enjoyed the puppet show (we also enjoyed this!), and the Skyline Snowstorm.
  • What activities/entertainment did you enjoy as a family?
We loved the pantomime, 'Jack and the Beanstalk', it was fantastic. We were amazed when we then saw, a couple of hours later, the cast playing the Skyline Gang - what a quick turnaround. The team are so hard working. We loved the Skyline Snowstorm, it was a lovely show. The pavilion was incredible, we couldn't believe it when we walked in and saw how much was in there. We also loved the puppet show at the Puppet Castle, it was very well done and the presenter was fantastic. OH wanted a go on the high ropes course, which looked fantastic! We went to the fairground and it was lovely.
  • Was there anything that surprised you about your break/Butlins?
Everything was geared towards families, so much was included in the price. There were lots of little festive touches that were lovely.

How would you rate/ describe...

  • Food - 9.5/10. It only loses a point because of the pancakes.
  • Accommodation - 9/10. Wonderful on the inside, but it does look run down on the outside.
  • Activities - 10/10. There is SO much to do, the only thing I'd say is that because of the restricted dining times in the premium dining plan, it's inevitable that you'll miss some activities.
  • Entertainment - 10/10. Can't fault it at all!
  • The Butlins team - 9/10 - everyone was friendly and happy to help. The only thing that let it down was the man in Gold reception when we arrived, who seemed quite miserable and we felt as though our checking in items were thrown at us.
  • Things to do for adults - 9/10. It definitely felt predominantly for children, but there was enough to keep adults happy too.
  • Things to do for children - 10/10. I'm not sure any child could be bored at Butlins! There's just so much to do, I think the hard part is trying to fit it all in! The one comment I would make is that as it was the Christmas Fantasy break, it would've been great to have had an opportunity for children to meet Santa. We'd heard something about some people getting tickets in their checking in pack, but we didn't hear anything (maybe because of DD's age?).
  • Things to do as a family - There was so much to do as a family, all the entertainment was family oriented. We loved the pantomime and the swimming pool.
  • Would you return/ try out another Butlins resort? We're already planning on it! We desperately want to return to Butlins Minehead, it's an amazing park.
  • What did you think about the value for money – especially compared to other family holidays? Value for money was excellent. Butlins is more expensive than other places we've been in the past such as Haven, Parkdean etc, but you can really see what your money gets you - we couldn't believe how good the value for money was.
  • Any other comments? We'd recommend the park to anyone, it was a fabulous holiday, lovely and festive, and we'd return in a heartbeat. Thank you Butlins and Mumsnet!

When you are back

  • Overall opinions from you and others in the family. We went to Skegness myself, my DIL, 2 teenage sons and my 2 grandchildren (2 and 3)
We had a lovely time we were really impressed with the food and accommodation and will happily admit much nicer than we had anticipated. The only thing which was I think a shame (and I am happy to be told by Butlins that this was not the case) is that we were all pretty sure they knew who we were and why we were there.
  • Describe your accommodation
We stayed in a 3 bed gold apartment with a double and 2 twins rooms. The apartment was close to the sea and about a 5/10 min walk from the central complex . I imagine a lovely place to be in Summer but not so much when you needed to go out early for breakfast in the middle of winter! When we arrived the apartment was sparkling clean and a nice touch we found 2 small bottles of wine and glasses set out on the table, further investigation by the ds' discovered a fridge full of wine, beer and a selection of soft drinks and biscuits and crisps on the work top .I am not sure if all visitors got this treatment or if the wine was a clue to our being sent by MN!
  • Describe your dining experiences
We had a premium Dining plan and had a choice of two restaurants the Yacht Club and the Deck and we visited both. There was a wider selection at The Deck and it was much bigger. The food was mainly self service and there was a wide selection with something for everyone and as much as you liked which was a great advantage when you have teens who can eat for England! The desserts were amazing and having previously stayed at CP and several of the Disneyland Paris hotels all agreed this was the best food we had had anywhere.
  • Did your break meet or exceed your expectations?
It certainly exceeded our expectations according to our booking form the holiday with dining would have cost a little short of £950 and this was all inclusive bar a snack at lunchtime, we had bought bread ,biscuits and other snacks with us so didn't need to buy anything onsite although there was a well stocked shop and several restaurants and take aways. everywhere was clean . Some of the chalets near the centre are looked a bit run down but to a certain extent we put this down to the fact that the weather was awful and could make anywhere look a bit depressing!
  • What activities have the kids enjoyed?
The teens did archery which they enjoyed they were too old for the club type activities and a bit disappointed that they had to join a family session with a lot of quite young children and their Mums but it was good value compared with other places at £5 for a full hour. The little ones had their faces painted and this too was very reasonable and very well done and the girls doing it were really friendly .
  • What activities/entertainment did you enjoy as a family?
We watched some shows in the central area though these were really for the little ones, we didn't get to see the panto, the queue was huge when we got there but there was so much else going on that no one was disappointed. Despite the cold we spent sometime on the fairground which was enjoyed by all and quite quiet so no need to queue for anything.
  • Was there anything that surprised you about your break/Butlins
It was not as busy as I expected but I am not sure the park was at full capacity it didn't appear that there were visitors in all the apartments and I am not sure I would have liked it so much packed to the rafters in mid summer!

How would you rate/ describe...

  • Food 10/10 The food was excellent could not fault it and was very impressed at how quickly tables were cleared and with the friendly staff in the restaurants.
  • Accommodation
9/10 The one thing we were disappointed with was the tiny bathroom .I also think an apartment which sleeps 6 needed an additional toilet. It was no fun having to vacate the shower at short notice because you have two small people who need the loo 'right now'! There was a huge cupboard which could easily have been used for an extra loo. Also the plugs in the bedrooms are in odd places in fact bar the plug for the tv there were none in the main bedroom at all I wonder if this is because the room layouts have been changed We had Housekeeping service and our apartment was cleaned each morning by the time we returned from breakfast.
  • Activities
As mentioned above the boys enjoyed archery, Dgd enjoyed dancing with Angelina Ballerina. There really was something for everyone. We went and looked at the pool but didn't go swimming as we had a variety of coughs, colds etc but the pool are looked very clean and those in the pool certainly seemed to be having a good time.
  • Entertainment
The little enjoyed several shows , they were a nice length not too long that they started to get restless . Mike the Knight was certainly a favourite with our small people! Additionally the smalls visited Santa and received a present and watched a short show first, this was in a special venue and we received timed tickets so no long queues.
  • The Butlins team
I didn't see very many Red Coats about but those we did see were friendly and chatty, staff in the restaurants were lovely. The only disappointment staff wise were those at the drive through check in but will talk more about that later
  • Things to do for adults
This was really all about the children and most of what we did was for them . The teens went off for a wander a few times and seemed to find plenty to occupy themselves but again were more than happy to do stuff with the little ones
  • Things to do for children
There is so much for little ones it was hard to fit it all in .There were a few 'delightful' children around but no more than we have experienced anywhere else we have been.
  • Things to do as a family
One of the things we really enjoyed together as a family was the dining experience with so much choice all in one place it was so much nicer than a restaurant with a limited selection where there always seems to be someone who doesn't like anything there is to offer. We spent a lot of time exploring, the beach was lovely and I imagine many summer visitors spend a good deal of their time there!
  • Would you return/ try out another Butlins resort?
The teens were undecided but I would definitely visit again with the younger members of the family
  • What did you think about the value for money – especially compared to other family holidays?
It was excellent value and far more reasonable than a comparable break elsewhere a week before Christmas we came back nicely rested in time for the festivities. Having everything included was a bonus, Apart from face painting and archery we didn't pay out for anything except a few souvenirs and the shops were nicely set out and there were some lovely gifts alongside the expected seaside stuff and yes we bought home some rock!
  • Any other comments?
As I said at the beginning we became more convinced for several reasons that some of the staff knew who we were . The worst part of our stay was check in. it is done though a drive through and it was very poorly lit especially when at this time of year the majority of guests arrived in the dark. The staff (who I accept were probably freezing) seemed overwhelmed and not really sure what they were doing. Having waited in a queue you suddenly come across signs saying you need to be in a particular queue depending on your surname by the time you saw it several cars were not in the right queues and it was a bit of a fiasco. When we got to the front our booking papers were not there and we were directed with an arm wave to gold reception which we couldn't find in the dark and the ground was quite rough in places and I went over on my ankle. The following day we saw 2 other people trip in the same area .Once we got to reception our booking form was waiting and it was fairly obvious they knew from that why we were there, the lady who checked us in was very helpful and informative far more so than the ones on the other check in had been. The drinks in our apartment were another clue and also whilst our room was cleaned early each morning the other ones in our block did not seem to be done until much later in the day. I also think (and I am happy to be corrected) that when our key was swiped at meals this tipped them off to. A couple of the people who checked our key called a manager and on our second visit to The deck when the swipe machine wasn't working we were waved through whilst everyone else had to give their name and be checked off a list! Before we left I did read the other reviews and some of the points raised by other reviewers had been rectified so nice to know Butlins are taking notice! The only thing that really bugged me was the smoking right outside the doors to the main complex. I felt that no smoking beyond a certain point signs at the edge of the main area would have improved the area for everyone not just asthmatics like me!

Finally I would just like to thank MN and Butlins for this opportunity. Getting the chance to do this at the end of what has not been the easiest of years for our family was just wonderful.

onadifferentplanet · 30/12/2014 09:42

One thing I forgot yesterday and think I should have mentioned the wifi (or should I say lack of it) You get 15 mins a day free but it was really poor dipping in and out. If you wanted more you had to pay and it was £15 per device for the length of your stay. We did pay for one but it wasn't very good and kept going off, on the Saturday evening when I wanted to check in at home, answer some emails etc I couldn't get it to work at all so this was one thing I did find disappointing . I know a holiday should be about getting away from it all but for a number of reasons it was important for me to be able to contact relatives during our stay. My teens didn't seem too bothered about not having internet but I can imagine many of the teens I see glued to their phones and tablets being a nightmare if they were without it for a few hours!

quality family time, something to do in all weathers - we love to play board games or craft/cooking activities. our children are young at the moment and most activities are usually geared towards older children or in the same place as the older children and little ones get intimidated or it isnt safe for them to participate.
a good living space is a must, and a clean flat floor for playing/crawling etc.

star1000 · 05/01/2015 12:59

Non-tester, For me a perfect family holiday consists of plenty for the children to do whether it rains or shines. Preferably by a beach as that's what the children love and some great family friendly places to eat nearby.

diamondsrock · 05/01/2015 15:23

We don't drive so the perfect family holiday has to be easy to get to and easy to get out of! Lots of holiday centres aren't accessible by public transport. I don't like being on-site all the time, so there has to be decent day trips nearby which are accessible by bus/train.

Wifi is an essential these days. There should be lots of activities for all kinds of children, from very active young ones to less sociable teens!

Blondiemama · 06/01/2015 02:53

Non tester:

The perfect family holiday needs something for all. Normally I would say lots of sunshine, a great swimming pool and good shopping and restaurants. Now I'm a mum Id say plenty of pampering opportunities, lots to keep the Littke ones (and daddy) occupied! When we go on holiday we like to enjoy a nice meal together so good quality, reasonably priced food is important (and wine!)

LovelyBranches · 10/01/2015 21:30

Non tEster here. My perfect holiday in the UK would be somewhere with brilliant walks that we could take our baby ds on. He loves going out in the pram and he would love it if we could take him out all the time.

Cintacmrs123 · 23/01/2015 08:51

To me the most important thing is spacious accomodation, with little ones at your feet it's nice to have space for them to play and you to sit and relax. To my family the most important thing is water so a bath and a swimming pool are essential to stop any grumbles.

ataraxia · 25/01/2015 00:58

Things you don't have at home such as swimming pool, hot tub, open fire. Wifi and enough power plugs needed these days!

A perfect holiday is having a happy family at the end of it not wanting to go home at the end of it, im hoping to book a butlins holiday with my little family this year

popsicle123 · 26/01/2015 17:21

Non-tester: the perfect family holiday would be somewhere where there are things to do whatever the weather and for all ages (my baby is 4 months old.) My main priority would be somewhere that I know would be safe and family-friendly for my child and family to visit. Good food, entertainment and nice, pleasant surrounding and accommodation are also very important and I feel make a holiday!

Slydragon · 27/01/2015 10:24

What makes the perfect family holiday for us is something that will appeal to each member of the family. Someplace that is no too busy so we can relax and with facilities to cater for a young child and baby. Somewhere clean with a nice location away from the main bustle. Somewhere that has options for eating is good and things to do / places to visit nearby is ideal.

babba2014 · 04/02/2015 12:01

Non tester

I dont go on holiday much so having the most perfect holiday is important to me.

First on the list is comfort. We all need a good nights sleep to enjoy the day so a clean, cosey and warm room is essential. It doesn't have to be flashy, extravagant or have a fridge stocked of beer! A kettle would be a nice touch but not necessary.

I'm not too hard to please. Local activities are good but not essential. If there's a forest, that is enough as the kids can explore, find oddly shaped twigs and other treasures. In the summer, we enjoy boating. As well as a ice cream truck. Family activities are great, such as treasure hunts.

We also enjoy a little shopping so any quirky shops are great. If there are cafes with delicious cakes then we are more than happy to part with our money for some treats.

We are not that hard to please but the basics should be solid for us to enjoy our stay. We shouldn't have to worry about a clean bathroom or food. We can enjoy nature ourselves as long strolls and adventures with the kids are fun. Any extras are a bonues.

mylittlel · 04/02/2015 15:01

affordable prices, if the place is not crowded, local shops and something to do

Pimientos100 · 04/02/2015 19:40

Non tester: The perfect family holiday has to incorporate some entertainment for each family member, regardless of age or ability. Being a UK based holiday, wet weather activities are a necessity! Also functional accommodation the allow the family to be together whatever the make up of the group.

SmileyShazza · 05/02/2015 19:15

Non tester - Things that make the perfect family holiday for us

  • Plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained - preferably stuff that can be done in all weathers as we all know how unpredictable that can be!
  • Activities which build memories
  • Things which encourage physical activity (walks, sports, pools etc)
  • Great selection of eateries within easy reach
  • Comfortable well equipped accomodation suitable for families
  • Clean ammenities and generally all fixtures, fittings, play equipment etc are kept in good order and clean
  • Staff which provide excellent customer service in all areas
  • First aid area on site plus all staff fully first aid trained
  • Early check in and option of later checkout (even if at additional cost)
  • Reasonably priced well stocked shop on site
fridaykitten · 12/02/2015 14:30
