This thread is for the ten lucky MN families who are going on a Butlins holiday over the next few months.

Butlins say “We have been providing family breaks for nearly 80 years, and although we’ve changed with the times, many people still believe that we’re old fashioned and run down. We’re looking to change these negative perceptions and show Mumsnetters that we’re a 21st century holiday destination, which offers brilliant family breaks at great value for money”

Testers are visiting the Skegness, Bognor Regis and Minehead resorts – check back to this thread to find out how they are getting on.
We have asked testers to add feedback at least twice - before they go and when they get back home.

Non testers: Butlins would love to know what makes the perfect family holiday in the UK. Everyone who adds a comment will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £200 John Lewis voucher, so that they can get stocked up for the holiday season.

Please note: comments may well be used by Butlins on social media and elsewhere. Your MN name will not be used.

Non tester.
I've not been to Butlins before so looking forward to the feedback.
Perfect uk holiday would be off peak, I hate queuing on the motorway I do enough of that workdays. Plenty of outside space or actives for my energetic toddler. A pool would be great as he loves to swim. And it definitely has to have two bedrooms so mummy and daddy get a holiday too!:)

SholerAndChocolate · 22/07/2014 09:03

We are back and had a great time!
I'm going to do this in 2 posts otherwise its going to be stupidly long!
So first up the When you are back questions

Overall opinions from you and others in the family
We had a great time, there were a few negatives which I will get to later, and one or two even made it into the video diary, but over all every one was friendly, the activities provided were fun and engaging the shows brilliant and the kids just had an amazing time!

Describe your accommodation
We stayed in the Ocean hotel which was really nice. It was lovely and clean when we got there, I really couldn't fault any of the cleanliness standards at the point of arrival. So as you entered on the left there was the children's bedroom. 2 single beds in a bright pink room. There was a tv with an inbuilt DVD player on the wall and he children loved the novelty of being able to watch a DVD in bed. (we took DVDs with us, but you could hire DVD's free of charge from the reception desk, you just had to leave a deposit with them) The children's beds were too high for DD2 to climb into, however in the bathroom there was a toilet step which she commandeered as her own and carried it everywhere so she could climb up to the beds, sofa, chair etc! The disappointing thing about the children's bedroom was that there wasn't any storage space! there was a little plastic box provided under the beds, but it wasn't big enough to put clothes in, more like a box to contain shoes or toys. So all the clothes for 5 people had to fit in the main living area.

The bathroom was the next room and was lovely and modern, Tiled throughout with a rainfall shower. The only negatives in this room were that the shower door didn't quite reach the top of the bath so there was water leakage on the floor when you had a shower, so no leaving clothes on the floor as they will get wet. Secondly at busy times the shower would run hot and cold for a few seconds.

Next up was the main living area and master bedroom. In here there was a drawer unit for 3 drawers, 1 wardrobe for hanging space which also had an iron and ironing board, 1 wardrobe for shelves (which had 5 shelves, 1 was taken up by a safe and another by bedding, but we were able to move the spare bedding and put it under the beds instead.) The king size bed was very comfortable and was designed to store suitcases under it. There was a 2 seater sofa bed which again was very comfortable to sit on and a dressing table. under the dressing table was a cupboard that housed a very small fridge. It wasn't massive, but would have been big enough to house some bits and pieces to make sandwiches for lunch if you wanted.

finally was the balcony, we were sea facing and on the 4th floor and the view was just stunning! The room was surprisingly big enough to house our double side by side pushchair (we did have to shuffle some furniture by a few inches though, but not too much hassle). Overall it was a lovely little room, it could have done with more storage space, maybe with a couple of drawers under the children's bed for clothes.

Describe your dining experiences
Breakfast was a buffet style breakfast, serving a cooked breakfast, a continental breakfast and a pancake and omelette bar. The pancake and omelette wasn't staffed very well and I actually never saw anyone serving there, lots of people queueing at times, but no one serving. There were rarely queues for anything and lots of staff on hand so you could order coffee and tea (there were jugs of fruit juice and water) Included with the Hotel was a free character breakfast, you just had to book with the butlers. The butlers were keen to express that the breakfast was exactly the same even though it wasn't served at the hotel. It actually wasn't exactly the same, there was no continental breakfast option and no omelette bar, although there were pancakes being served. There was a machine for Coffee and Tea and also for the water and fruit juice. The character breakfast was a lot of fun and the kids enjoyed meeting Billy and Bonnie the bears and singing and dancing to the (really annoying and its now stuck in my head!) choclate song with tambourines.

The only down side was the Character breakfast was offered at 2 times, 9am and I think around 8am, the Hotel breakfast started being served at 7.30am, which seams reasonable enough. However, the parents and tots swim session (on Saturday) and also the hotel exclusive swim session (on Sunday) both started at 8.30am, it was a real squeeze to get fed and over to the swimming pool in time. (On Sunday we chose to go to the character breakfast and not swimming) It would have been useful to start breakfast just 30 minutes earlier, at 7am to make timings a little easier

(I've just realised I forgot to talk about dinner so I'm going to come back and talk about dinner in a minute, I've already been typing for an hour and the kids are getting bored!)

Did your break meet or exceed your expectations?
I think it exceeded expectation in some areas, the entertainment for example, I wasn't expecting there to be so much of it! In terms of accommodation again it exceeded expectations, but only because I'd heard bad things about it, in reality, it wasnt any more than what I would expect in decent family accommodation.

What activities have the kids enjoyed?
Going through the What's On Guide, there wasn't actually that many activities for the 2-5 year old age group (lots of entertainment though) the tots soccer, was on at 2.15-3pm which really was nap time for my children (especially considering the entertainment for them didn't even start till 7.45 some nights). There was also a fun and games activity the girls were looking froward to, but unfortunately I don't think the red coat running it really wanted to be there. Most of the children who turned up were on the 2 end of the 2-5 age bracket, they played a quick game of What's the time Mr Wolf, which went straight over most of their heads as they were too young! and then she decided that as 'only' 8 children had turned up there wasn't enough to play any more games, so she packed up and left. She left 8 very disappointed children and the parents were able to rally round and play a few more tag type games, but it would have been better to have the balls and parachutes she had packed up and taken with her.

What my children loved the most were playing in the fountains getting very very wet and also the little comedy acts that popped up. for example the gnomes that came to the fountains to fish and the builders that were tryng to fix the leaks! There was also a police officer that we saw and a farmer trying to catch is scarecrow's who had run away.

What activities/entertainment did you enjoy as a family?
A highlight was Mike the Knight as the girls love him on Cbeebies and we also loved the redcoat show (although did leave early as the girls were just too tired)

When it came to the entertainment we did feel that the person who had decided what times things should be on hadn't really considered the ages of the children and eating times! For example on the Saturday there was story time with Billy and Bonnie bear at 5-5.20, then at 6pm a photo shoot with Angelina Ballerina and at 6.30 the Skyline gang until 7.15. which meant that we could watch the story time, but then missed the skyline gang by the time we got back to the hotel, ate then got back out it would have already started/be half way through. It would have been better to have more earlier, then a break then have the skyline gang a little later.

Was there anything that surprised you about your break/Butlins?
After all the horror stories I'd heard I was surprised at how clean everything was. However I feel I have to mention a little indecent that happened, tht might make a few of you (a lot of you, hopefully all of you!) go eeewww. I was changing ds's nappy on the bed (using a changing mat) and typical boy wee'd as soon as I took his nappy off. it went all over the sheet of the bed. It wasn't a problem, I rang down to reception to tell them what had happened and ask them to change the sheets (we'd already had DD1 wet the bed the night before, the sheets and mattress protector were changed with out any fuss) the lady asked me if it had gone on the mattress, and it dawned on me there wasn't a mattress protector on the master bed (already my stomach was churning!). A cleaner came up to change the sheets and said, 'well the mattress is a little damp so we'll flip it over', he then asked dh to help flip the mattress and when he did we saw the blood, sweat and ...other stains from previous guests. I really didn't want to sleep on that bed again, but didn't have any choice! Up until that point I hadn't even considered there wouldn't be a mattress protector on the bed! It was a real low point and Butlins if you are reading this PLEASE invest in some mattress protectors for your master beds, no one wants to sleep in anyone else's wee, blood, sweat etc! Its actually what would stop us returning in the future, and if we were to return I would certainly be bringing my own!

Phew! that was long! Right I will be back later to answer the remaining questions and also fish talking about the dinner dining experience.

SholerAndChocolate · 22/07/2014 09:57

Right so the Dinner Dining -

We were on the Bed breakfast and dinner package. the first night we are at the hotel restaurant (the kaleidoscope bar and restaurant) I was a buffet style, help yourself type meal and initially was very confusing. We were shown to our table and really left to it. No one explained we could just go up (from where we were sat we couldn't see the food area) no one explained how it worked and we were left to work it all out for ourselves.

Once we did work it out, with the help from other diners who were just as confused! it was fairly easy. The food was good offering a choice of roast dinner, a pasta bar (which like the pancake and omelette bar ant breakfast just didn't seem manned) but in theory you could have fresh pasta made up for you with a choice of sauces. There was also a choice of curry and Chinese dish as well as a children's choice (fish fingers, chips, veg, meatballs, pasta) Drinks aren't included and had to be ordered from the waitressing staff (which although there were many of them seemed few and far between!) The drinks menu included a children's choice of cocktails and also a more grown up non-alcoholic cocktail selection - as dh and I are both t-total and usually have to stick to lemonade this was actually a really nice touch.

There is a system in which you can book 6 other restaurants and the hotel will give you dining vouchers to pay. We decided to try out the other hotel restaurants so on Saturday we went to The Deck which serves the Wave Hotel. It was a completely different experience, staff were very helpful and showed us around, the selection of food seemed to be bigger and there were also some drinks included with the meal (fruit juices, water and a summer fruit cordial). The restaurant was very spacious an we had no problems navigating our double pushchair around. I would definitely say this would be the number one restaurant to eat at, it was much nicer than the others!

On the Sunday night we visited the South coast bar and restaurant which serves the Shoreline Hotel. This restaurant had the smallest selection of food however the Pasta bar was continually manned and the staff were lovely. We had a few problems navigating the double pushchair, but would definitely recommend as a restaurant to visit!

I'll be back later for the remaining questions

How would you rate/ describe...
Food
I’d give the food an 8/10. There was lots of choice and it was edible and very nice.
Accommodation
I’m going to give this a 6/10 although it was very lovely, very clean and very modern, there were a few things that really annoyed me, storage space being one, it felt like the apartment was never tidy as there just wasn’t anywhere to put anything. And lighting being another – there were these ‘mood lights’ which were coloured and constantly changing. When you’re trying to get children asleep in a dark room or feeding the baby in the middle of the night all you really want is a lamp for light not a multi-coloured changing light that wake up the children and distracts the baby. The options were full lights or these coloured ones.
Activities
I’m going to have to give this a low mark as there weren’t many activities provided for my children’s age group and the one activity that we managed to get to was cancelled, although it did have so much potential to be fun (big grassy area, parents willing to join in, balls and parachutes etc) 4/10
Entertainment
All of the entertainment was really good, although like I said before there could be more thought about ht eage groups its aimed at and the sorts of times they’d be normally eating and sleeping. So definitely a 9/10 (at the red coat show one of the male lead singers clearly didn’t know his lines or his dance moves, it was almost like he had just stumbled onto stage by accident and spent most of the time looking like a deer caught in headlights, it was hilariously funny but I couldn’t really give them a 10/10 for it! I will say in his defence, it was the first show of 2014 so he could have just been very nervous!)
The Butlins team
They were so friendly and really couldn’t do enough for guests, every one chatted and waived to the children from the play leaders in the parents and children’s chill out rooms to the cleaners in the skyline pavilion, everyone was so friendly o a 10/10
Things to do for adults
Having 3 very young children (all 3 and under) this holiday wasn’t about us, we didn’t have a lot of time to do anything for the adults as we were keeping the children entertained, but we did enjoy sitting out on the balcony when the kids had gone to bed watching the sun go down. So I’m going to leave this question.
Things to do for children
There is so much to do we struggled to fit everything into just 1 weekend, although there isn’t many structured actives for the 2-5 year olds, there are so many free attractions to visit that will keep them entertained for hours from the kiddy rides, to the fountains and swimming pool (oh, I need to tell you about that too!) and the shows, we didn’t even get to spend much time at the beach as there was just so much else going on! I’m definitely going to have to give that a firm 10/10.
Things to do as a family
I feel like I’m repeating my self a lot, but there really was so much to do that I’m also going to give this a 10/10
Would you return/ try out another Butlins resort?
I would have said yes and we were talking about trying out Minehead as its closer to home, however after the bed incident I’m not too sure! It just feels a little grim and definitely spoilt the holiday for us! So yes we would if processes were put in place to adequately protect the mattress from accidents.
What did you think about the value for money – especially compared to other family holidays?
I definitely think it’s worth the money, especially if your children are a little older than ours are as then they will enjoy it all so much more.

  • Any other comments?
A few other small points, Towels weren't replaced when they were taken away - we left the bath mat and a hand towel hanging over the bath. They were taken away as dirty, but not replaced. By Sunday evening we had no bath mat, no hand towels and only 2 bath towels as they had been taken away as dirty and not replaced (they weren't dirty, just hanging up to dry!) One of the lifts broke on Friday shortly after we arrived leaving 1 lift to service the whole of the hotel. Clearly Butlins don’t have a weekend maintenance team as they were unable to get anyone to look at it until the Monday. It seems like a small thing, but with a pushchair we had no choice but to use the lift and would be waiting up to 10 minutes for one to arrive. And finally the Swimming pool! We were really looking forward to taking DS swimming for the first time. We went along to the parent and tots swim session on Saturday morning. Got ourselves and 3 children changed (remember they are all under 3, so no easy task!) Took them out, stepped in the water and it was cold. It wasn’t even a little bit warm, it was cold. I played with ds in the water for 5-10 minutes before he just felt too cold to continue (he’s only 2 months old) and I went out onto the deck chairs provided to warm him up in his towel. The girls and DH continued to play for 15-20 more minutes before dd2 was crying she was so cold, we decided it was time to call it a day and got 3 children and ourselves dressed again. It was a shame as the pool was lovely and perfect for babies and young children as it’s a gradual entry one, so perfect to allow young children some freedom. We decided it wasn’t worth the hour plus of changing time for 10-30 minutes of play so didn’t go back to the swimming pool again. Overall, we honestly really enjoyed the holiday and would recommend it…providing they sorted out the bed issue!

Phew thats been a bit of a mammoth typing session! Now I'm off to upload and edit some film to send off to MNHQ.

TheHumancatapult · 22/07/2014 11:25

i would say a holiday where all my family could go where no discrimanation or penalised becuawse am a wheelchair user
Good disabled access
Something to amuse a wide range of ages and a reasonable price
Resonable priced on site shop
Not to far to travel within 3 hours
Near train station

But sadly Butlins only has 1 disabled accomidation that can sleep 5 people across all of its parks a and is booked up between now and dec 2016

.Where a non disabled family can stay in anything from standard to gold and sleeps 6

and yes Butlins building few more as in 2 but they will be the most expesive plantinum and only in minhead

SholerAndChocolate · 22/07/2014 12:02

Are you sure the human? The swimming pool at Bognor had 5 disabled changing rooms (more than family rooms) everywhere we went were spaces for wheelchair users. It suprises me after seeing that there's only I room built for disabled access.

SholerAndChocolate · 22/07/2014 12:05

Actually I spoke to and saw several wheelchair users on site, so this suprises me even more!

KnackeredMuchly · 22/07/2014 13:38

A perfect UK holiday for me includes:

A seperate lounge away from bedrooms
Excellent pram paths and curbs
Large safe enclosed area for my toddler to fling himself around in
Suitable for dogs - so lots of covered outdoor seating with dog water bowls. And lots of poo bins.
A creche or babysitting service would be good

KnackeredMuchly · 22/07/2014 13:40

Sholer - not only 1 room, only 1 suitable for 5 people. Considering how booked up it is I'm sure Butlins will change it soon!

SholerAndChocolate · 22/07/2014 14:50

Oh I see! I'm with you now :)

Fizzyplonk · 22/07/2014 20:58

MadMonkeys · 23/07/2014 11:56

Non tester

  • plenty of outside space for the kids to run around
  • decent accommodation with more than one loo
  • close proximity to a beach
CheeseEMouse · 24/07/2014 16:25

Non-tester: a perfect family holiday in the UK involves taking some extended family with us so everyone gets the chance to be with the children. It would also include good baby facilities and plenty of outside things to do, whether it be walking or being on a beach.

CMOTDibbler · 24/07/2014 16:28

Non tester - plenty of opportunity to be active, so access to bike trails or quiet roads to cycle on. Things to see. Good local food

500internalerror · 24/07/2014 16:34

Non tester here. Although we've been to butlins 5 times!

The perfect uk holiday would comprise:
A clean family room with a huge breakfast
Everything close by, as we don't drive
The ability to either have all inclusive like butlins, or know the cost of food and activities in the area in advance
Not have amusement arcades galore
A beach - the kids only think it's a holiday if they see the sea!
Somewhere safe for them to play so that we can relax
Some museum/zoo type attractions
No massively inflated tourist prices or school holiday prices
Staff that are well treated & so do enjoy their jobs as much as anyone can

teddygirlonce · 24/07/2014 18:56

Non-Tester

Good weather and holidaying somewhere that has good accessibility to a variety of family-friendly days-out options - some free (beach, sites of natural beauty etc...), some theme parks, places of historical interest, good restaurants/cafes and a bit of retail therapy thrown in for pocket-money/treat spending :-).

And the option to get away from the crowds as much as possible!

spababe · 25/07/2014 17:05

Non-Tester here: A perfect family holiday would be one where it is a holiday for all of us so no chores or catering and lots to do that we can all enjoy together. To this end we prefer a hotel or condo or lodge environment with nice restaurants/pub food close by with plenty of choice. Maid service to make the beds etc is also a must. Entertainment wise we like family attractions eg water parks, theme parks, places of historical interest, science type museums, country walks, family quiz in the evenings.

Ramblings · 28/07/2014 09:21

Non Tester - For us it has to be a great location, plenty of activities, good , clean, well maintained accommodation and plenty of choice in restaurants, cafes etc.

We like outdoor space for free play and services spread across a site is an added bonus.

Mummageddon · 28/07/2014 11:51

Non tester.

The main thing for me is somewhere with clean facilities. I can't stand arriving at the accommodation to find yucky looking bathrooms or kitchens.
Other than that, somewhere relaxing, but with some activities and outdoorsy stuff to keep kids entertained. Food shops and restaurants nearby are also a plus.

Byrdie · 28/07/2014 14:27

non tester

Perfect UK holiday for us is somewhere where there is a playground within walking distance, nice accommodation, pool, cultural sights within driving distance, daddy driving with tom tom charged and snack snacks and more snacks pack in the car. And not forgetting wipes. Or nappies. Plus no one being ill!

KateOxford · 28/07/2014 17:54

Non tester

The perfect family holiday for us is somewhere with a beach, things to go out and see like castles, shops nearby to pick up essentials and restaurants/cafés to take the children to and get take aways from in the evening. The accommodation always have to have as many facilities as we have at home such as good shower, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer or washing line. Spacious living area. My children are too young for us yet to consider holidays with entertainment such as butlins, haven or centre parcs but I'm sure we will in a year or so.

boptanana · 29/07/2014 22:36

Non tester
For us it's about location. Buggy a. Essible near a small village and within walking distance of the beach is perfect. Hireable baby equipment is an added bonus Smile

missorinoco · 29/07/2014 22:43

What makes a perfect family holiday:

Reasonable weather for the season - A little rain I can tolerate, but I don't want to be wrapped up in a waterproof coat on the beach all summer.

Something for all of us - activities for the children, e.g. games, ride on cars, or access to suitable activities.

Nearby shops to pick up milk etc.

A washing machine in the accommodation

Clean, and comfortable accommodation that we would be happy to spend a rainy afternoon in.

Decent shower and bath.

A television and VCR/DVD player with videos/DVD for the children.

hydra234 · 30/07/2014 09:43

Non tester- the perfect uk holiday for me would be to move around the country a bit- road trip it! A day at the seaside watching punch and judy and eating sandy ice creams, then off into the countryside with dinner at a good pub and a b and b. maybe an overnight stay in a town and then go even further a field. A real mix with activities we plan for the kids but also planned ones by other people so my husband and I can have time together.
