This thread is for the 15 Mumsnetters who are currently testing out the Kärcher SC2.500C Steam Cleaner.

Kärcher say "The Kärcher SC2.500C Steam Cleaner makes light work of grease, dirt, stains and even limescale, delivering deep cleaning results with no chemicals or scrubbing. It kills 99.9% of bacteria with just the power of steam, and can be used on most surfaces around the home"

Non-Testers: What cleaning tasks do you have trouble with? Maybe you avoid cleaning the oven or dread scrubbing the bathroom? Are there any tasks that you think a steam cleaner could help with? Whatever your cleaning woes, Kärcher would love to hear about them.

Everyone who leaves their response on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win their own Kärcher SC2.500C!

Testers: We'll be asking you to add feedback twice - we'd like your first impressions now and in a week we will add some more questions.

So, for your first impressions, Kärcher would love to know:

  • Did you find setting up the Steam Cleaner easy, were the instructions helpful?
  • What were your impressions from the first few uses?
  • Where have you used the Steam Cleaner?
  • What cleaning chore have you been most pleased with the results from using a Steam Cleaner?
  • Did you you use this for more functions than you originally planned?

Thanks and good luck!

hermione In my old house I used cillit bang on the shower doors - they were as you describe. Used to come up amazingly well. Maybe try that first and once the worst of it's off, regular use with the karcher might work?! It didn't get the limescale off my bathroom tiles so I think it's maybe just a bit too resistant!

Nickles83 · 27/04/2014 08:41

I hate cleaning the oven, having to get down on your hands and knees and scrub.... Urghhhh I hate it.

CheeryCherry · 27/04/2014 08:46

Hate and avoid cleaning shower screens, skirting boards and oven. Having to do all three to try and sell the house!

Bubbles85 · 27/04/2014 09:52

I hate cleaning the dreaded oven, and de scaling the taps in the bathroom... Which reminds me they really need doing again!

HermioneWeasley · 27/04/2014 12:35

It would definitely benefit from a squeegee attachment and an iron attachment.

Have steamed mattresses today. Don't know whether it will kill anything or just warm up the dust mites to think it's sexy fun time (DP's theory)

HermioneWeasley · 27/04/2014 12:43

Just done my fabric sofa with the small brush attachment and it's come up lovely

Things I would clean with a steam cleaner

  • showers and tiles especially the one in the spare room which Ds1 uses and everyone else forgets about until it is completely scummed up,
  • toilets and behind toilets
  • would be good for round the pond where I wouldn't want to use chemicals
  • kitchen floor

The oven is one job I loathe. It's never clean really and I always worry I've not got rid of all those really dangerous smelling chemicals. They are awful.

Our kitchen floor - it's these tiles from Spain. They never look clean. Always murky looking. Crap. Why the lady before us chose those I've no idea.

Windows. I would love sparkling windows. Unless I shell out ££ on a window cleaner, it's not going to happen really.

Testing again, had another bash with cleaning some more areas...

Where have you used the Steam Cleaner?
I've now tried the glass in the oven door, the gas hob top, the washing machine detergent drawer and mopping the kitchen floor.

What cleaning chore have you been most pleased with the results from using a Steam Cleaner?
a). Glass in the oven door: hardly shifted the dirt at all. I tried just the steam nozzle, the little round brush and also the small surface brush too. To compare against our Polti Vaporetto I got that out too, but that didn't shift it either. I think I need some badass chemicals.
b). Gas hob top: came up great. Needed regular wiping to get the mucky water off it but looks great. Very easy to do especially getting grime out from under the knobs.
c). Detergent drawer: Came up okay but needed to switch to using the little round nozzle. It still wasn't perfect so I had a go with the Polti. This had the strength of steam to get the rest off. Therefore slightly disappointed with the Karcher, the steam function isn't as powerful as the Polti which did the last 10% of this task to get the results from good to fantastic.
d). Mopping: I loved the thick plush cloth for this, it was lovely and soft and did a great job picking up any little bits of dirt left on the floor. Nice even steam across the whole cloth. My only complaint is that the floor mop is a bit stiff so it was quite tricky to glide across the floor at different angles.

Did you you use this for more functions than you originally planned?
No, was hoping to clean the BBQ but there's not been a nice day since getting the Karcher to do it.

RedKites · 27/04/2014 17:09

Non-tester. Am another who is avoiding cleaning the oven...

AnneEyhtMeyer · 27/04/2014 17:40

Purple - try putting one of the metal scourers on the end of the small brush. I used this for my oven door and it took under 5 minutes to clean off the absolutely disgusting brown stuff. It was amazing.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 27/04/2014 17:41

Hermione how was the steamer on your mattress? Did it leave it damp?

Bettythree · 27/04/2014 19:49

I always avoid cleaning the tiles in the shower cubicle until it just can't be left any longer, and the same for cleaning the oven.

HermioneWeasley · 27/04/2014 21:04

Anne - it did leave it slightly damp (make sure it's on full steam and there's no condensed water left over in the nozzle - d'oh!) but I aired it in a room with the window open and it was fine in a couple of hours.

HermioneWeasley · 27/04/2014 21:05

DP did notice the improvement in the grout in our shower, so it must have been significant Grin

crazybutterflylady · 27/04/2014 21:11

Tester answering the questions!

Did you find setting up the Steam Cleaner easy, were the instructions helpful?
It was relatively easy yeah, I'd agree with others that the pull out bit was confusing, I think it should have all been together. I'd also say that you could lengthen the section describing possible uses of the cleaner and more detail... 'Part D12: the round head. This head can be used for xyz' as I found it a little haphazard trying to work out what does what. Saying that I am a skim-reader of instructions so maybe I missed this.

What were your impressions from the first few uses?
I'm in love! I hate cleaning, but this is so cathartic! A quick blast on most things sorts it out in next to no time. I find myself going through the house with a view to finding stubborn marks which need cleaning!

Where have you used the Steam Cleaner?
Everywhere! Ginormous shower screen, floor, stainless steel bin, oven door (oven to follow), hob top, extractor fan filters (extractor fan itself will be cleaned shortly), cat flap, marks on the carpet, radiators, oven fascia, washing machine fascia...the list goes on!

What cleaning chore have you been most pleased with the results from using a Steam Cleaner?
Probably the shower screen. It was so easy! I was really impressed with how quickly it got through the grease in the kitchen too. Oh and the stain on the carpet. I can't pick a favourite!

Did you you use this for more functions than you originally planned?
Definitely, loads more! When I'm using it on one thing I furtively look around for something else to clean next. I cleaned the fixed shower head and the controls in the shower once I'd finished the screen. I think I'm addicted Grin

AnneEyhtMeyer · 27/04/2014 21:18

Thanks, Hermione. Which attachment did you use for the mattress?

Great idea about the bin, crazy. I think I am also going to try it on my stainless steel bread bin which gets a bit sticky from just being in the kitchen. I hate cleaning that.

crazybutterflylady · 27/04/2014 21:18

I also meant to say that one of the kids had stuck a huge sticker on our stainless steel bin which I tried (and failed) to peel off. It left that annoying papery sticky stuff on the bin and a quick steam got it off in no time. Awesome.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 28/04/2014 09:07

Thanks Anne I'll give it a go with a metal scourer. It is really disgusting but when the oven door is shut you don't see it (so out of sight, out of mind!). However we've sold our house to a lovely young couple so trying to get it spotless for them when they move in.

HolidayArmadillo · 28/04/2014 09:08

Does the scooter not scratch stuff?

HolidayArmadillo · 28/04/2014 09:08

Scourer!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 28/04/2014 09:34

No, the scourer didn't leave a scratch.

My problem is now that the oven door is sparkling clean I can see through to the disgusting oven, so I need to clean that ASAP!

Spirael · 28/04/2014 10:26

- Did you find setting up the Steam Cleaner easy, were the instructions helpful?
My 3 YO DD figured out how to fit most of it together as she was taking the parts out of the box, while DH used the instructions to figure out the rest easily enough. So assembling didn't seem too difficult!

I read the instructions once DH was finished with them and they seemed straightforward enough. I was mildly entertained by the information that I shouldn't use the steam cleaner in an explosive area and the warning that I shouldn't clamp my fingers!

Agree that an extra sheet giving examples of which attachment to use where and the best practice to achieve optimal effect (i.e. dry off with another cloth or leave damp?) would be good for steam cleaner novices. Could even be in picture format, so universal for all languages. Or, maybe a sheet pointing towards some in depth video demonstrations on the website?

- What were your impressions from the first few uses?
Very positive. It took a short while to warm up and the noise initially startled me, but once the light indicated it was ready to go then I was extremely impressed by the power and consistent steam provided. Refilling was very easy as required and I had no problem changing the ends as needed. The pipe got warm (understandably) but never too hot to handle.

I agree with the comments that there could have been a better way of storing the wire, and the wire itself seems a bit short.I have a long kitchen and unless I use the central socket I'm not sure it would reach from one end to the other.

Also, as someone who is very pregnant at the moment, I'd have appreciated the carry handle sticking up further (or having a hinge to allow it to stick up further) so I had to bend over less in order to pick up/move the steam cleaner!

We had two of each type of cloth provided in our pack which has been enough, as the floor cloths are reversible once they get a bit mucky. I might get some of the thicker plush cloths at some point and I'm eyeballing the wire brush with scraper attachment to tackle the BBQ over the summer.

Washing the cloths was easy, just threw them in the washing machine to tumble dry with some other cleaning cloths and towels. They've come out clean, soft and ready for another use. Nice touch by the way that it specifically states that the cloths were pre-washed and ready for immediate use out of the box.

- Where have you used the Steam Cleaner?
So far I've done a complete clean of the master bathroom, which included the sink, tiles, floor, bath, taps, towel rail, mirror and shower screen. I balked at using my lovely new steam cleaner to clean the toilet, so used my usual disposable wipes there.

I was impressed, particularly with the mirror and the shower screen! The screen in particular was a bit scummy with soap, but a blast all over with the steam cleaner than a wipe down with a dry cloth and it came up crystal clean and sparkling.

Aside from that, we've done the lounge and kitchen floors downstairs and they've come up very nicely. In the next day or two, I'm intending to tackle the oven door, the microwave, the hob/splashback and the inside of the washing machine. Will also be taking on the murky floor of the WC... Will report back!

- What cleaning chore have you been most pleased with the results from using a Steam Cleaner?
So far, the shower screen. I was expecting a bit more of a battle and some scrubbing to get it to come up clean, but it was shining with minimal effort on my part.

- Did you you use this for more functions than you originally planned?
Not much so far, except that I hadn't initially thought of using it on the towel rail and spontaneously decided to give it a go. I'm glad I did! Came up lovely.

I am now planning on tackling some of the insides of the windows to see whether it can easily budge the sticky fingerprints of DD and muddy paw prints of the cats. For that matter, I might try it out on the cat beds and get DH to tackle the cat flap. (Not sure I could bend down that far right now...)

We're setting up the birthing pool tonight, so once we've given that a trial fill, I'll be using the steam cleaner to clean/sterilise it. I hadn't initially thought of using the steam cleaner on fabrics, but given what other people have described I'm currently contemplating whether to try the steam cleaner on some things like the car seats!

ROG952 · 28/04/2014 11:18

The oven is the most hated job, with all the grease, so a steam cleaner would help. We also have a wet room that takes ages to clean, with the tiles around the shower, the sink then the toilet.

MRSBSENIOR · 28/04/2014 11:55

Non tester - The oven is my worst nightmare to clean. I just never clean it. I pretend its not there!
