This thread is for the 100 Mumsnetters who have been trying the reduced alcohol wine based drink from Blossom Hill – Vie 5.5%.

Here's what Blossom Hill Vie say, “The start of the new year is all about lighter choices – so it’s the perfect time to try Blossom Hill Vie 5.5%vol. Vie is a reduced alcohol wine based drink that has an elegant, light and fruity taste. It is the perfect choice for those occasions when you'd like a drink without the higher alcohol content – like lunch or early evening.

Vie has all the taste you'd expect from Blossom Hill – the nation's favourite wine*– but with only 5.5%vol and 30% less calories than Blossom Hill still wine. Vie is available in White - with hints of citrus, pear and apricot flavours and Rosé - with a floral aroma, ripe peach and strawberry flavours. Both are v. elegant, v. delicate and v. tasty choices – Vie 5.5%.

If you prefer sweeter style drinks, then Vie is perfect for you. We think it’s v. tasty, but would love to hear what you think! For more information about Vie and to explore more of the Blossom Hill range click here"

Thank you to all the testers who are taking part. Below are a few questions for you to answer but please feel free to add any other comments you have too.

We tried the white. 3 adults split the bottle - unfortunately all of us left half a glass as we though the peach(?) taste was unpleasantly overwhelming.

I would describe it as a quite sweet, very fruity wine.

Yes, I knew about the calorie count.

Would I recommend it - possibly. It would probably depend on their usual taste in drinks.

Would I buy it again - no as none of us particularly liked it.

  1. Which Vie variant did you try – white or rosé? What did you think?
White, it was okay (and just checked the empty bottle, it was in date!)
  1. How would you describe the taste of Vie to your friends?
A mix between wine and shloer.
  1. Did you know that Blossom Hill Vie has 30% fewer calories than Blossom Hill still wine?
I think I saw that somewhere.
  1. Would you recommend it to them? If so, why? If not, why not?
Probably not. Wasn't a great wine substitute, think I'd rather stick with full strength wine plus hangover or pure soft drinks rather than this strange mix of the two.
  1. The RRP for Blossom Hill Vie is £4.99 per bottle. Do you think you'd be likely to buy it again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Wasn't keen on the taste so no.

  1. Which Vie variant did you try – white or rosé? What did you think?
I got Rose. It was ok, tasted good, but flat probably due to being a year out of date No sore head in the morning though Grin
  1. How would you describe the taste of Vie to your friends? sweet and fruity, easy to drink.
  1. Did you know that Blossom Hill Vie has 30% fewer calories than Blossom Hill still wine? Not until I read it, but have to say calories is not something I consider when drinking wine
  1. Would you recommend it to them? If so, why? If not, why not? Probably, but Not sure about this, perhaps when I've managed to try a bottle that is in date, and still sparkling
  1. The RRP for Blossom Hill Vie is £4.99 per bottle. Do you think you'd be likely to buy it again? If so, why? If not, why not? It is comparable to other Rose wines I buy, although if on offer I would be likely to pick this.

  1. Which Vie variant did you try – white or rosé? What did you think?
white. It was a really nice, light drink.
  1. How would you describe the taste of Vie to your friends?
fruty, light, easy to drink lots.
  1. Did you know that Blossom Hill Vie has 30% fewer calories than Blossom Hill still wine?
I do now :)
  1. Would you recommend it to them? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes because it tasted good and was a nice low alcohol alternative.
  1. The RRP for Blossom Hill Vie is £4.99 per bottle. Do you think you'd be likely to buy it again? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would possibly buy it again. The taste was lovely but I do tend to look for bottles under £5 unless it's a special occasion. My current favourite is £3.99.

  1. I tried the white, initially the out of date bottle (didn't realise at first) and then my replacement bottle. The in date bottle was much more pleasant, a light fruity taste which was ever so slightly sparkling. I would say I quite liked it, but wasn't blown away by it as it had a bit of a watery taste and was a little too sweet for my liking but it wasn't unpleasant either.
  1. I'd say it was a light summery drink, nice for a lunch with friends but not for a special occasion.
  1. I would recommend it if I knew they were trying to cut down on calories or on alcohol but otherwise probably not.
  1. I would drink it over lunch with friends
  1. Yes, I knew it was lower calorie.
  1. I enjoyed trying the wine but I think I'd rather stick to drinking my usual wine, just less of it!
hannahem · 11/02/2014 14:27

Oops, should have also added that I probably wouldn't buy it again unless it was a very good special offer as I think £4.99 is quite expensive for a lower alcohol wine.

MrsPennyapple · 11/02/2014 20:48

1. Which Vie variant did you try white or ros? What did you think?
White - normally prefer rose but drink white from time to time. It was sweeter than I expected and I couldn't manage more than one glass, even though I generally prefer wines sweet rather than dry.

2. How would you describe the taste of Vie to your friends?
Fruity, I thought I detected a taste of pears.

3. Did you know that Blossom Hill Vie has 30% fewer calories than Blossom Hill still wine?
No I didn't, but calorie content wouldn't make a difference to my choice of wine.

4. Would you recommend it to them? If so, why? If not, why not?
I'd recommend it to friends if they definitely like sweet wines, but not if they prefer drier ones.

5. The RRP for Blossom Hill Vie is 4.99 per bottle. Do you think you'd be likely to buy it again? If so, why? If not, why not?
I might buy it if I was having guests round, to give them the option of a lower alcohol drink if they wanted one. I wouldn't buy it for myself though, it just didn't do it for me.

Additional thoughts: Don't cook with it. I made a chicken stew, which I normally put white wine in, but only had the Vie in the house so I used some of that. It made the whole dish far, far too sweet and not really enjoyable.

  1. Would you recommend it to them? If so, why? If not, why not? For those who are fans of light fruity wines- yes. Also to all my slimming world groups- definitely!
  2. The RRP for Blossom Hill Vie is £4.99 per bottle. Do you think you'd be likely to buy it again? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think that's pretty good value although I'd be even happier to find it on offer!

In response to the poster above who said not to cook with it, I used it in place of the usual blossom hill Zinfandel in risotto and it was absolutely fine! I suppose it depends on what you add it to?!
Thanks for the chance to try it out for free- much appreciated!

  1. Which Vie variant did you try – white or rosé? What did you think?
We tried the Rose

  1. Did you know that Blossom Hill Vie has 30% fewer calories than Blossom Hill still wine?
I wasn't aware of this but I don't think I'd ever noticed this wine before.
  1. Would you recommend it to them? If so, why? If not, why not?
I don't think I would recommend it, it was ok but I thought it was too sweet.
  1. The RRP for Blossom Hill Vie is £4.99 per bottle. Do you think you'd be likely to buy it again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Probably not, I wouldn't say I disliked it but I would probably go for their regular wine.

  1. Which Vie variant did you try – white or rosé? What did you think? I tried the rosé. I found it very tasty and moorish.
  2. How would you describe the taste of Vie to your friends? Fruity and light. Excellent for social drinking, though probably not quite up to the challenge of making a bad day better. Best drunk in front of Modern Family re-runs as it won't get you drunk but just tipsy enough to laugh a little harder at Jay.
  3. Did you know that Blossom Hill Vie has 30% fewer calories than Blossom Hill still wine? I saw that on the bottle, it's ok though - I combined it with some chocolate chip cookies to make up the deficit.
  4. Would you recommend it to them? If so, why? If not, why not? I would! It tastes nice and gets just the right amount of tipsy. I don't like alcohol much but I liked this.
  5. The RRP for Blossom Hill Vie is £4.99 per bottle. Do you think you'd be likely to buy it again? If so, why? If not, why not? Absolutely! I loved the taste and the warm fuzzy feeling it gave me without the sickness. I'm drinking it now so can't comment on the hangover potential yet but I'm sure it'll be grand.

Thank you Blossom Hill and Mumsnet!

  1. Which Vie variant did you try – white or rosé? What did you think?
White
  1. How would you describe the taste of Vie to your friends?
It is quite fruity and a lovely drink, I can particularly imagine it at BBQs in the summer, or crisps and dips!
  1. Did you know that Blossom Hill Vie has 30% fewer calories than Blossom Hill still wine?
I didn't realise before this trial, but given the number of calories in wine, that is fab.
  1. Would you recommend it to them? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, it's a lovely refreshing drink and very easy to drink.
  1. The RRP for Blossom Hill Vie is £4.99 per bottle. Do you think you'd be likely to buy it again? If so, why? If not, why not?
It's a good price, although you can buy normal wine for a little less. I wonder if special deals would help. I would buy it though.
