  1. Essential first aid advice for parents
  2. 5 very easy
  3. 4
  4. Definitely in an emergency situation and also to prepare and learn. It would be a good tool for reassurance too.
  5. I don’t think so as it seems all areas have been covered although I wondered about a section on pets (e.g. dog bites as too many children seem to be attacked or bitten by dogs)
  6. I’m not entirely sure if anyone would be able to access this information in an emergency. Perhaps it could be used to note down medical notes too like when your child had chicken pox or when jabs were due (could tie in with your calendar?) to serve as a reminder.
  7. Yes definitely – I want to ensure I test myself regularly to continue to feel fairly confident.
  8. Even though self-diagnosis is sometimes problematic, I thought looking for symptoms might be useful. So for example, if your child has a rash you could type that in as I might not go straight to ‘meningitis’.
  9. 5 – an excellent and indispensable app
Faunanflora · 03/12/2013 13:51

What would be your one line summary of the app?

~ How easy or difficult do you find the app to use? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

5, very easy, you open it and immediately see a list of choices of illness with an emergency tab at the bottom and ways to prepare yourself also along the bottom.

~ How easy or difficult did you find the content to learn first aid? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

5 - the learn tab is highlighted in red and is hard to miss

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

All of these. Knowing that you will be prepared if something does happen takes a lot out of the fear out of the situation when something actually happens. But you don't need to remember everything as the app travels with you.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

The prepare section is huge - in fact I would never go anywhere if I took heed of every eventuality.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here? I don't think it is currently useful as if I was injured and could not speak about any of this, I doubt that people would look on my phone to see if I had the app to get it from.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Yes. I have already taken child first aid courses but always worry that the stress of an actual incident would make me forget everything.

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections? Bites and stings are covered in "prepare" but not in the "learn" section. As the learn list is the first thing visible, I would rather see a link to it there.

~ Overall what star rating would you give the app? Please say where 1 star = poor and 5 stars = excellent 5

Summary: first aid primer for parents & child carers
Ease of use: 5
Finding content:5
How will it be used: to learn/ reassurance
Think in an emergency I'd just dial 999
Prepare content: more images of typical rashes, equipment like an epipen as I've never seen / used one
Child record: I just can't see me using that at all as I already keep a record elsewhere but this could be a good alternative.
Confidence: it has improved my confidence as its refreshed my memory of first aid training in my dim & distant past.
Other topics: nothing has come up in discussion with friends in addition to those topics covered, very comprehensive
Overall: 5, excellent tool

redgate · 03/12/2013 16:23

~ What would be your one line summary of the app?

Doesn't replace having training, but very useful and great to have at hand

~ How easy or difficult do you find the app to use? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

4 - I don't like just icons for the sections though, a title as well would be useful - especially if using it in a rush.

~ How easy or difficult did you find the content to learn first aid? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

4 - is explained quite clearly, great way to go over your existing knowledge and improve your confidence. Fortunately not had to use it in an emergency, but would do if needed

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

Definately look at it from time to time to check I haven't forgotten anything and to improve my confidence. Might use it if there is an emergency and 2 adults around as could send OH to get the iPad and check what I was doing was right

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

No it looks fine

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

Not used this yet

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Yes, as I know it is there and I can refer to it if needed in an emergency and also good to have something to look at from time to time, which I know is up to date (as opposed to the book they gave me on a course)

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?

Not sure

One line summary: useful app to have

Ease of use? 5 I found this a very easy app to use; well done! An emergency app needs to be!

Ease of learning first aid? I can't fairly answer this as I've recently (last 6 months) been on a baby & child first aid course via my local children's centre. This is a lovely 'course in my pocket' & seemed straightforward & well laid out.

How would I use it? So far, I've been dipping in & out in spare moments to refresh my knowledge & check what I think I know! I'd use it as a confidence boost in a first aid situation too I think.

Prepare section: not sure. It's quite big & I've not gone through all of it yet. I'd like to see more pictures though. Agree with earlier poster that it would be helpful to have pictures kit eg epipen, inhalers. Not everyone would know what to look for if a child couldn't point it out.

Child record section: personally I won't use this. Perhaps I am overly concerned about that level of detail being on my phone if it's stolen, but there you go. That's my opinion & I am lucky enough to have kids with straightforward health apart from one with asthma, but I can see others finding it very useful, & if my kids had more complicated health I think I would use some of it.

Would I feel more confident in an emergency? Don't know tbh. Sorry. I would value having a 'buddy' on my phone if I had time to use it; then I would feel more confident I was doing the right thing.

Any other topics? Initially I thought of quite a few, but then stopped myself. This is a FIRST AID app, not a family health app. I would like pictures of rashes though, particularly in a positive/negative glass test way. My kids have had allergic rashes, rashes with a cold; (I know! Apparently it was a trait of the cold/sore throat virus they had); Fifth Disease; (one I only knew about because I'd seen a poster at school); chicken pox. I have glass tested all of those apart from chicken pox due to other symptoms & would have like a quick confidence boost. I realise that pictures take up space, but a link to a picture glossary maybe?

Another thing that might be useful is guidelines on when to treat as 'baby', 'child', 'adult'. This was covered on the course I went on & made me feel more confident in how to treat my kids in a first aid situation. Apologies if this IS covered & I've missed it.

Overall I'd give this a 5. Lovely app. Thank you.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
Very handy to browse through and we'll thought out, see it more as a prepare / learn tool but having the emergency button front and centre and quick straight forward clear advice / videos may make it useful in emergency.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
Pretty handy, didn't note anything obvious missing.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
Not sure how handy it is, it's all information I would know and no one else would be able to access it. Maybe having list of common childhood illnesses or vaccinations would be handy so you could note date they had it. However I'm more likely to make a note in their medical book.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?
Yes - handy and straight forward refresher

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?
I'm sure there are more but can't think of any at the moment. Oh what to of it'd they swallow a coin - had a close call earlier Blush

Excellent first aid information, in an easy to use app
.
~ How easy or difficult do you find the app to use? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.
I really struggle with smart phones and apps, but once my DP helped me download it, I had no more problems. It was so simple to use and everything was laid out really well. I think I could use it whilst panicking.

~ How easy or difficult did you find the content to learn first aid? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.
5-though I have previously done first aid courses so it was mostly refreshing what I already knew.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
I know I have gone through all the scenarios learning what to do just incase. I imagine most parents will just use as a 'just incase' thing. It makes me feel secure, knowing if I end up in an emergency situation and freeze I have everything I need to know there. It's great reassurance

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
I think the 'prepare' contents very good. I think it covers a lot. it certainly had helped me feel prepared.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
This is a brilliant idea. God forbid my DD was in accident, but if she were I'd be a mess. Having that information right there so I can just show it to whoever needs to see it is brilliant. Makes me feel a lot better knowing right there all the information paramedics and doctors would need is sorted.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?
100% it's really made me feel prepared and a lot more confident. Knowing I have a quick easy to sue resource right at my fingertips makes me feel much happier.

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?
It has all the things I would worry about covered.

~ Overall what star rating would you give the app? Please say where 1 star = poor and 5 stars = excellent
5 Stars completely. It's something I would recommend not just to all parents, but everyone with a smartphone. It is such an easy to use and valuable resource with the potential to save lives. It's laid out in a very simple manner making it very user friendly. It's kept very simple and factual. I'm really pleased to have this app on my phone.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
Good to read through to get a basic knowledge but also great in times of need. I would usually google if unsure when something happens to DS now I have a more reliable source on my home screen.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
I am quite happy with this section but I do a lot of care plans so have a knowledge of a lot of this stuff.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
I hope this is never needed but if it is it could be vital especially for a child with allergies etc. Emergency services should be told to check for this in the event of an accident.

5

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

It's perfectly suited for dipping in and out of the content, but I think essentially I and family would use it to learn stuff specifically about children. I think I would be unlikely to use the app in a true emergency like not breathing, as would just phone 999. But it's like doing a first aid course from home but having the back up of the app to help you if necessary.

I also really liked the test yourself section.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

The coverage is fairly extensive and covers all the main children related issues. Perhaps something about rashes - a picture gallery or something, as it would be reassuring to know what is a worrying rash and what isn't.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

I liked being able to personalise it. Not sure how much I would use it as my children don't have allergies. It may be good to add vaccination info so it's stored electronically rather than just in their red books.

Yes definitely

5

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

To learn what to do, to check the procedures to follow, in an emergency or in non emergencies.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

Mostly it is stuff I do/would do anyway but there are some things I hadn't thought about, e.g. what to do in a fire, and useful to have that info easily to hand as well in case needed in such a scenario. Also useful for people that perhaps hadn't thought about these scenarios.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

Presumably to put info in about your children so it's close to hand should it be needed when you are away from home.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Yes definitely. I've tried to remember what to do in the scenarios that would need the most immediate action, e.g. burns, drowning, unconscious, but can't always keep it in my head and it's reassuring to have information close to hand.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it- to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
I think it is great to flick through to improve or refresh your knowledge, but equally I think it could be a go to information source in an emergency.

~Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content- anything else you'd like to see in there?
I thought it was very comprehensive. I thought the checklists were helpful.

~*What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you'd like to see there?
I have a son with a nut/peanut allergy and asthma, so know the importance of having this recorded. I wasn't sure who it was for though, I don't think the Emergency services would look for it. I have the app on my IPad which tends to stay at home. I don't have a smartphone.

Without a doubt yes. I wish I had the facility to carry it around with me.

Graphics and demos of chest compressions were not great as dummy was clothed and advice on croup is now incorrect. Steam no longer recommended as warmth increases inflammation

What would be your one line summary of the app?

Clear, simple first aid advice for babies and children from the Red Cross

~ How easy or difficult do you find the app to use? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

  1. Not sure I like the 'emergency' bit always popping up first.

~ How easy or difficult did you find the content to learn first aid? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

5, although I haven't read them all and I'm not sure how I'd stand up to being tested in a few months!

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

All of the above. In an actual emergency I think I would do something first and then, if appropriate, double check that I was doing it right second - you wouldn't always have time to check the app first.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

No, it seems comprehensive.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

Probably wouldn't use it - if I'm not conscious to tell someone that information, they wouldn't be able to get into my phone anyway.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Yes.

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?

Both - falls generally. I know it's a 'baby and child' first aid app but I was out recently where a man had fallen down the stairs and staff at the restaurant were being very slow to help. I did whip out my app but couldn't see anything that would cover that scenario - including for a child.

Reassuring and easy to use.

  1. I found it very easy to use.

~ How easy or difficult did you find the content to learn first aid? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

  1. It was well presented.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

I think it is useful for both learning and feeling prepared and also as a reference.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

I liked the section and think it covered everything. I can't think of anything else to add at the moment.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

I don't think I would use this. I don't need to keep a record of my children's details although it could be useful for childminders or similar.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Yes. I am quite an anxious person and being prepared helps my confidence in most situations. I feel confident now that I have the correct advice available to deal with emergency situations.

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?

No. I think that what is covered is fine.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
I think that in an emergency unless you have the app to hand and aren't panicking it would be less useful, but having read through those sections it would help to prepare you for such an event.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
Not that I can think of

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
I don't think I'd use it so not really relevant to me

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?
I'm quite rusty on this stuff so yes, it has been a useful reminder

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

To prepare and learn and very much for reassurance. It would not be my first port of call in a true emergency but would be if I was worried and wanted to double check myself.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

Quite a substantial amount of information, nothing that I can think of to add.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

Good idea, would possibly benefit from addition of vaccinations/ dates and maybe room for NHS number (for form filling etc).

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Yes, I have enjoyed working my way through the app and learning more. I am a fairly practical person so if I have the theory I feel confident having a go if needed. This app makes things easy to remember.

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?

The only thing I would add is an 'electric shock' piece.

~ Overall what star rating would you give the app? Please say where 1 star = poor and 5 stars = excellent

5 stars. great app!
