~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
I would be mostly likely to use it in an emergency or to check how to deal with a minor incident like a sting.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
Can't think of anything.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
I probably wouldn't initiate the use of this section, but I'd be happy to do so if, for example, my nursery asked me to fill it in and share it with them via email.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?
Yes

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?
No, it's very comprehensive.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
It wouldn't be my first call in an emergency naturally but I think I would have learnt from it, prepared for an emergency and understand a situation better from using the app.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
More contact details slots but you can only be so prepared!

Simple easy to use first aid for children and babies.
5 Really easy to use.
5 Very easy to use.
I would use it to learn for reference I like the tests, can't see myself using it in an emergency though.
the prepare section seems fine can't think of anything else to go in there.
I dont Know why I would need the child info kit but it could be a handy thing to have all the details to hand but I do keep the kids red books to hand. Perhaps add more ice contacts.
Yes I feel more confident about first aid than I did before.
think of anything else to go in those sections.
I give the app 5 stars well done very useful stuff!

My review is that the app is incompatible with my (very outdated) android Eclair :( I know, I know, you can't be expected to create an app that is compatible with 4 year old technology. Please could you send me a book in the post? I checked earlier and that is still compatible with my operating system :)

How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

In the case of my DH, he's doing it so he already knows what to do so hopefully doesn't panic, so prepare in his case. For me I used it to refresh my knowledge.

Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

I'm not sure I'd use the Prepare section. Although DH probably would, after the fact, but there is probably enough there.

What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

I'm not sure what the point of this section is, it doesn't link with anything i.e. medicine times. Also if you know your child has an allergy you normally know how to deal with it, so are unlikely to need the app for that.

Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

It hasn't made me any more confident, but I think DH is slightly.

Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?

Whooping Cough, my DS went around with undiagnosed WC because he wouldn't do that cough in front of the doctors and they ignored me. Having a video clip of Whooping Cough and being able to say this is what it sounds like might be able to help.
Information on Listlessness may help, as in when should you get them seen to.

Hi,

So to answer the questions:

  1. I would describe the app as a database for first aid paediatric care
  2. I would give the app 4/5 for ease of use
  3. I would give the app 3/5 for learning first aid, the information is all there but I'm not sure you can relate technique using description and pictorial representations.
  4. I would use it to refresh my first aid knowledge (I am a first aider), and to check if I am unsure about how to do a certain thing.
  5. I think that it's all covered
  6. I've set my child's record up and think it could be useful
  7. the app has reassured me that my prior knowledge was correct and I have enjoyed the testing section for this reason
  8. again I think the app is well put together
  9. I give the app 4/5, because I think that I may not remember to use it in an emergency, but it is an excellent resource for accurate advice and technique.
RenterNomad · 26/11/2013 11:35

Both DH and I downloaded the app, and despite having made a number of attempts at it, neither of us has made much progress because of the means of delivery. A phone is with me most of the time, but, with DD sleeping badly at the moment, all I really want to do on the phone is read, not learn (and MNHQ can attest that my IP address has been "seen" on MN instead of my studying!).

I think this content would be far better split into two apps, an emergency app and a learning tool. This dual purpose app is a bit too "full" and I would be afraid of its being unwieldy in an emergency.

For delivery of emergency help, an app in a phone - which is with one for most of the day - is an excellent means of delivery, and I can't think of a better organisation to provide it.

On the question of learning by phone, I think this has underlined to me how I need an actual course. I will definitely keep the app on my phone, and make more attempts to learn as I go, but for now, I am aware of the app as, appropriately for first aid, a crutch!

Perhaps it could make sense to charge a certain amount for the learning app, which "buys" a bigger discount on a Red Cross Course. This sends a signal that it is a tool which requires time investment, but is also an investment which can repay itself financially, as well as in safety?

Sorry this is so negative. Positives I really would like to mention, though, are:

  • use of video: use of this medium is a brilliant supplement to the text and diagrams of a traditional manual (although text and diagrams are also essential, since they provide static and simplified information): the more channels of understanding used, no doubt, the better the learning.
  • the "improvised first aid" section is brilliant, especially the first-aid ways to use everyday objects (e.g. clean plastic bag to cover a wound).

A technical problem I had was that the app crashed when I turned the phone to landscape: perhaps you could programme it not to rotate ? I am using the Android version, on a Samsung Galaxy SII.

What would be your one line summary of the app?

Very useful app that is easy to use.

How easy or difficult do you find the app to use? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

5 it is very easy

How easy or difficult did you find the content to learn first aid? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

5 it is very easy to use.

How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

I think the app will be good to learn first aid and to be prepared for different situations. I think it could be good reassurance for parents.

Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

The prepare section is good and full of information.

What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

I think the child record section is good that you can add all the details in one place however feel that the medication section could set out easier by allowing you to input different times for taking them and setting the alarm for them.

Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Yes, I did have previous first aid knowledge but feel that it will be helpful for people without.

Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?

All areas covered

I think it would be brilliant as a resource after a first aid course, or perhaps the app details could be handed in out in literature for new parents.

I thought that was very good.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
Me and my partner spent some time testing each others knowledge which was really useful, a great tool to see what you know and what you think you know. As an emergency i would call 999 but anything less i would use it especailly as sometimes you just need reassurance that you are doing the right thing.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
I could think of anything else.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here? I can see the use for it but phones are esaily stolen these days and i never add my sons details to anything not even facebook, so i probably wont use it.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency? Yes, as i know it's there for back up. I did a first aid course but it was a while ago and somethings need refreshing, the app does that.

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections? No, but a note on the hospital. When i out im my postcode it doesnt bring up either of the two major hospitals nearby and they are the only two with A & E. A bit worrying as one is only 5 miles away.

For First aid content and ease of use etc its excellent but a little let down by the hospital search so 4.5

If I was having an emergency I don't think it'd be much good - but I thought it was a good learning tool for the generals of baby first aid

What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

To be honest it is such a large App, I kind of feel like they should make the data accessible via a link rather than always on the phone. It was so big I will have to delete the app from my husband's phone - I couldn't even download it on mine so it isn't something I will carry on using

Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Yes

Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?

I feel like it would be better off to have the serious first aid topics covered - but to have a little stored information for reference on the minor first aid - what to do if you get something in your eye? How to deal with a cut or scrape? When it is a sprain or a broken bone or a dislocation?

IF you want to have a large reference app - you're not going to reference the serious issues for example CPR - you will phone 999 instead so those do not need to be stored on the phone

5

How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
I think that the app is most useful as a learning tool, to refresh knowledge and ensure that you are prepared in an emergency. While the app is easy to use, I don't think that there would be sufficient time in a true medical emergency to access the required information or that it would be at the forefront of my mind at that time. Less serious ailments such as croup could be looked up at the time.

Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
I really enjoyed the prepare section and found the information easy to absorb.

What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
I didn't feel that the child record was very helpful. It's not located in an intuitive place and would be difficult to find. It is not something that I would use.

Yes definitely, I found the emergency section very helpful and feel that I have learned a lot.

I did not receive a link to this. I will add my feedback later today.

RenterNomad · 27/11/2013 14:08

Having thought over my feedback above, I do want to acknowledge that it may be a case of "a bad workman blames his tools," so feel free to take it in that light! However, I do think that leaves my point, about splitting the content into "learning" and "emergency" apps, still valid. Smile

AnnMumsnet · 27/11/2013 15:47

@EstoyAqui

I had a specific question regarding a piece of advice on the app regarding visiting hospital for all burns. I was told at a first aid course last year that this was only necessary if the burn was bigger than the palm of a childs hand. Can anyone shed any light?

Hi - the British Red Cross asked me to pass on the following to you re this query:
British Red Cross recommend that people always seek medical advice if a baby or child has been burned. Burns can be very dangerous depending on the age of the child and the size, depth and location of the injury. Even small burns can be potentially life-threatening. Call NHS Direct if you are unsure (and 999 in an emergency). The advice given to 'seek medical advice if the burn is larger than the casualty's hand' applies to people over the age of 12

To prepare and learn. Possibly in an emergency, but in the kind of situation where you're with someone else and one of you checks the app for reassurance.

Summary of app; A must have app for quick and vital first aid guidance

Ease of use; 5 The set up allows you to find what you need quickly and easily

Content to learn first aid; 4 Being a novice first aider I (and 2 of my friends) found the content easy to understand and methodical. A friends who has previously done first aid courses said that she found it excellent as a refresher

How would myself and others use it?; I found the learning section really useful to give me some basic first aid knowledge of what to do in situations that may arise having children and will continue to use it to learn and refresh. The ability to get the app to find medical establishments close by is handy and it will be useful as a tool for reassurance and guidance in non-emergency situations

Prepare content; I found this section quite useful to reassure myself that I do the right thing most of the time but I'm not sure I would use it overly much - now I've flicked through it I probably won't use it again

Child record section - A great idea if this could become widely recognised within in the app by medics. Problems are often encountered at the scenes of accidents etc when children are involved and aren't able to communicate their name etc. most of us have our phones with us permanently and if someone was able to pull the information off the app it would brilliant - maybe one for the future I think!

Confidence after downloading the app; The app has definitely helped me to feel more confident in basic first aid though I would still be cautious of more complicated first aid or in an emergency without actual training from a course

Star rating; 5

~ What would be your one line summary of the app?
A useful introduction and reference of emergency aid for babies and children.

~ How easy or difficult do you find the app to use? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

  1. I had no problems using the app, but I usually have my tablet connected to a keyboard and consequentially was running the app in landscape mode. I was glad to see this was supported, but it meant that the pictures and videos were stretched to fit horizontally and therefore too long vertically to fit on the screen, meaning I could not see the whole thing at once.

~ How easy or difficult did you find the content to learn first aid? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.
I can't really answer this as I knew most of the stuff already. I've done quite a few first aid courses in order to train for work.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
I see the app being used more for learning and training with the occasional reference. For use in an emergency situation, I actually found the St. John's Ambulance app a bit clearer - sorry!

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
I see that the Travel section has a link to Netmums, but not Mumsnet... Wink It's a nice reference section. One thing that might be nice to see is some ideas about how to train children of appropriate age how to administer first aid or get help in the event that something happens to the adult looking after them.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
I wouldn't use this. I'd be concerned about storing data about my child in an app, I wouldn't necessarily have my app on me in any situations and any key information I'd have memorised anyway. From a technical point of view, the app also forced to portrait mode when entering this section - just when typing on the keyboard would have been useful!

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?
Not really, but I was pretty confident anyway!

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?
I didn't see Shock covered anywhere, it might be good to cover what to expect when someone goes into Shock and how to deal with it.

~ Overall what star rating would you give the app? Please say where 1 star = poor and 5 stars = excellent

  1. It's nice, but not perfect. A few niggles it would be nice to see ironed out.

Also, Leeds General Infirmary doesn't seem to exist! Considering it is the hub of child emergency care for a wide area, it should probably be there.

RueDeWakening · 28/11/2013 23:09

~ What would be your one line summary of the app?

Good all round app for child first aid, and a useful back-up.

~ How easy or difficult do you find the app to use? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

5, but I already use the original Red Cross first aid app and the layout of this one is basically the same.

~ How easy or difficult did you find the content to learn first aid? Please indicate a number between 1 and 5 where 1 is difficult and 5 is very easy.

I'm a paediatric first aider, so there wasn't anything new, but I found it a useful refresher with lots of information that was well presented in bite size chunks.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?

I would definitely use it in an emergency as it's a good back up to check my first aid responses. Also I like the 999 call being integrated into the app.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?

I couldn't find anything about diabetes in there, and I think it should be covered.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?

I entered some info (not necessarily all accurate) but then couldn't find out how to review/edit it, only how to add an additional child record.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?

Probably, I like being able to check the current first aid info as I know it can and does change.

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?

Diabetes as mentioned above.

~ Overall what star rating would you give the app? Please say where 1 star = poor and 5 stars = excellent

~ A one stop First Aid App!
~ 5
~ 5
~ I would say to learn and prepare but mainly to reassure that we have done the right thing in an emergency.
~
~ As a parent i would not use this, i have the red books and who is going to be able to get into my iPad to access this info other than me?
~ yes
~ i think these are great but i think more pictures could be added, I think a lot of people like to see visuals to compare injuries too or when supporting broken bones, a pic of how it should look would be invaluable to reassure people they are doing it right.
~ 5, a very well done in-depth app and if the Red Cross don't know it, nobody does!

5 very easy to use.

5 very easy to find what I needed to find.

~ How do you think you and other parents would use it – to prepare, to learn, to test understanding, in an emergency, as reassurance, etc?
I will certainly use it to learn things and also in other situations as well. I hope to learn it all before an emergency crops up, I don't think I will have time to access the app at that time.

~ Any thoughts you have around the 'Prepare' content – anything else you’d like to see in there?
I think all looked good in that section.

~ What about the child record section? What did you think about this? Is this something you would use? Anything else you’d like to see here?
I certainly wouldn't use it as I don't want my childs details on my phone.

~ Has downloading and using the app made you feel more confident about helping a child in a first aid emergency?
Certainly has.

~ Are there any other topics you would like to see covered in the 'Learn' or 'Emergency' sections?
I don't think there is anything missing but I am sure it could be added to.

I've already reviewed this but then came to use it and thought something on a common cold / earache would be useful.
