Hellmann’s feedback thread – non testers: talk leftovers and sandwiches for a chance to win a £50 hamper NOW CLOSED

MichelleMumsnet · 21/10/2013 15:14

This thread is for the 30 Mumsnetters who took part in the Hellmann's 'Sandwich of the Century' challenge as part of their
[[https://www.hellmanns.co.uk/tips/love_food_hate_waste.aspx/ Love
Food Hate Waste campaign]].

Non-testers: Hellmann's would love to know if you use leftovers in your sandwiches. Do you regularly use your leftovers in a sandwich for lunch the next day? If you don't, do you think it’s something you'd try? Every non tester who adds their thoughts will be entered into a prize draw to win a Hellmann's hamper worth £50.

Here's what Hellmann’s have to say, "For 100 years, Hellmann's Mayonnaise has been at the heart of the greatest Sandwiches but did you know that every day we throw away 200,000 loaves of bread and are even careless with our fillings for example, nearly three million tomatoes, and one million slices of ham are disposed of and not eaten?! At Hellmann's, we love food and we believe eating should be a moment of joy. That's why we hate food waste and are now encouraging you to use your lovely leftovers!"

Testers were sent some Hellmann's mayonnaise along with a welcome pack.

Testers: We've got a set of questions we'd like you to answer about making sandwiches and how you found the Hellmann's challenge. Please also feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  1. How often do you make sandwiches for yourself and/or your family?
  2. How many different types of sandwich filling do you have in one week?
  3. Do you make sandwiches the night before or are you an early riser?
  4. What are your hints and tips to keep your bread fresh?
  5. What ideas did you/ your family come up with for using leftovers in sandwiches? What worked well/ what didn’t work out so well?
  6. Do you have a favourite sandwich you already made regularly with your leftovers?
  7. After taking part in the challenge do you think you will be more inventive in your sandwich fillings featuring Hellmann's Mayonnaise?

If you have made a particularly impressive sandwich, feel free to post a picture of it on this thread too! All testers who leave their feedback on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 M&S voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

  1. How often do you make sandwiches for yourself and/or your family?

Not often enough - my daughter is very fussy.

  1. How many different types of sandwich filling do you have in one week?

Maybe two

  1. Do you make sandwiches the night before or are you an early riser?

No - they go soggy

  1. What are your hints and tips to keep your bread fresh?

Some people say the fridge but just wrapped in an airtight container is fine.

  1. What ideas did you/ your family come up with for using leftovers in sandwiches? What worked well/ what didn’t work out so well?

I am not imaginative enough. I tried beetroot - which was a bit messy. Veggie sausages were lovely!

  1. Do you have a favourite sandwich you already made regularly with your leftovers?

Sausages or ahem - crisps.

  1. After taking part in the challenge do you think you will be more inventive in your sandwich fillings featuring Hellmann's Mayonnaise?

Yes, definitely. I should be able to sandwich anything - within reason!

Non tester. Definitely! Especially if have some left over meat from Sunday lunch with a bit mayo to give it some taste and texture usually.

Non tester

Always use the meat but it does need mayo to soften so...

Chicken, mayo and whatever fresh herbs I have (thyme, oregano etc)
Beef and may with crushed chillies
Pork with mayo and dijoin mustard...

Do you regularly use your leftovers in a sandwich for lunch the next day?

  • yes, especially if we've had a roast or something. Apart from DH who has form for creating sandwiches out of anything imaginable. Cottage pie sarnie? Done it. Lasagne roll? Been there. Curry toastie? Regularly. Absolutely foul if you ask me.

My absolute favourite left-overs meal is a tortilla wrap with roast chicken, salad leaves and a good squirt of Hellmanns.

T'is the food of the Gods.

I tend to have lots of good intentions with leftovers and will carefully wrap leftovers and pop them in the fridge...before remembering they're there 4 or 5 days later when they're not really any good for eating and having to throw them out Sad

Non tester here...I use leftovers, leftover salad gets used in sandwiches, as does grated cheese and cold meats. A blob of mayo too of course!

I use leftover roast dinner for my sarnie on a Monday, with mayo instead of butter, but since going dairy free I'm sad that I can't use it anymore as Hellmans has cream added! It's a shame as mayo is traditionally dairy free. It's also made making my own coleslaw difficult unless I use another brand.

Non tester here - I'm just the worst and waste a lot of food and rarely put leftovers into sandwiches. Looking forward to picking up ideas from this thread!

Although when I do a pulled pork roast, I always keep the pork and stuffing and make my husband a sandwich. Similarly I keep left over fajita mix and make it into a baguette for him the next day too sometimes.

I love anything in a sandwich. Blush. Lovely fresh bread, leftovers plus Hellmanns light mayo (to replace calorie laden butter ) is a very typical lunch for me.
I get my DCs (young adults) to eat 'leftovers' in their sandwiches by not giving them too many alternatives. If the fridge is bare apart from yesterday's roast chicken they will use it. Necessity is the mother of invention and all that.

Non tester.

We rarely have leftovers Grin

Favourite in this house: flaked mackerel, add splodge of yogurt, splodge of Hellman's, black pepper and a squish of lemon or lime juice.

Not for me, as I'm vegetarian. My favourite leftover to eat with Hellman's would be cold roast potatoes, not in a sandwich though!

Finally received my parcel, thank you! I forgot how lovely and creamy Hellmans was compared to supermarket brands.

So anyway, onto leftovers!

We have the usual stuff, I cook too much on purpose so I can freeze portions for lazy days.

Thing like left over roasties and veg I make into little bubble and squeak patties for sandwiches, there is nothing better of a Morning than one of honest on some homemade bread with a squeeze of mayonnaise and some ketchup.

We are the sort of family that eat anything and I'm a believer that there is noting that can't go in a sandwich, left over curry and mango chutney is a real winner here as are a couple of sausages that the kids have left on their plate chopped up with a boiled egg and some mayo.

I am a non-tester who actually plans my meals around the left-overs they will leave me for packed lunches. My lunch is always left-overs - usually between two pieces of bread. Our family favourite is sausage stuffing loaf (from the Sunday roast) with lettuce and mayo although pigs in blanket sarnies are a close second.
