How are testers selected!

I think there are quite a few of us who were surprised that we weren't chosen for the F & F uniform test and the Pampers who needed 1000 testers. They wanted 100 testers and there didn't seem to be that many applied from the postings.
Could you explain how it works please, maybe they didn't use the 100 or 1000 in the end! Thanks, from one of several confused MNtrs x

I say on my phone the other day and ended up in this section of my MN app for the first time.

I went on to the F&F thread, clicked on the link, entered my details in the survey and today found out I'd 'won'.

Beginners luck? I'll be trying again, that's for sure.

I imagine that they have an ideal target audience for each product and look toward people in that group, if that makes sense.

Do the companies specify a demographic breakdown, eg %ages in different age/income brackets, or do they want a random sample?

Would it even be possible to block people who have been members only since the announcement of the test applications? Felt very unhappy about the suggestion that eg money saving websites are clued in.

i also apply and dont post, have been chosen for lots of small things (food samples etc) though i dont apply for everything only the things i can really use/or would use,the uniform is the 1st biggie ive managed to get & was soooo of the dyson & coffee machine but such is life i guess its just luck of the draw fingers crossed

I got the pampers one (which still haven't arrived) I think I fitted a demographic for that one having a reluctant pull up pant refusing potty trainer.

never get chosen regardless of applications and posting. :( , F&F atleast got convinced as it was only 100 but very surprised about pampers as I haven't got any e-mail either. Is there a place in each thread where all the chosen people names are displayed so we all can have a look and reconfirm it or it is something again on Data protection?

I'm interested too, have applied for a few things and never been chosen I really don't think it's fair when people who just sign up to apply get chosen either.

Define MNer though. In my head a MNer is someone who reads and/or posts fairly frequently/regularly - using more of the site than just the product tests.

I don't think that the mere registration of an email address makes a MNer.

I was chosen for the nappy one - first time, re the tesco one, I am disappointed there is no point in lying as it would have been a huge help to us with our finances. I am just unhappy at the thought of someone joining to cash in so to speak.

I joined mn for the advice and support. I don't post everyday or anything but do use the site. I agree just signin up with the sole purpose of ebterin the comps is not really that fair

Just cos people post all day doesn't mean they're entitled to win stuff more than people who check the site for advice & see a competition on the home page

I agree with that captin however it was suggested on the other thread that some people sign up after seeing links on money saver etc with the sole intention of trying to get freebies rather than have any interest in the site if this is true I find that quite unfair.

I have no issue with lurkers etc winning. Does that make sense??

I think what sticks in the craw is that someone who uses mn to search for advice, read articles etc is a different breed to what we would define as a Mumsnetter. So when Tesco/Pampers etc then publish their results and say 95% of Mumsnetters think we're great, it doesn't feel like these people are Mumsnetters. If they didn't put that tag on it then it wouldn't matter

That's my theory anyway :)
