B&Q unloved rooms revamp - review thread for MNers getting stuck in! NOW CLOSED

TheOtherHelenMumsnet · 17/05/2013 11:30

This thread is for the 20 MNers who have been chosen by B&Q to revamp an unloved room in their home.

Those selected have been sent a B&Q giftcard to buy the things they need to give their unloved room a makeover. They've undertaken to complete the makeover by 3rd June, and will be keeping us up-to-date on how their revamps are going on this thread as well as posting photos.

Please do follow their stories and add your own comments if you want to show some support!

Below are the questions we'd like testers to answer but please feel free to add your own comments too. Please give us a bit of info about the room you're revamping and what you plan to do with it in your response.

  • Why is your unloved room unloved? What do you want to change about it? What has stopped you until now?
  • Where did you get your inspiration for doing up the room from? What sort of style are you going for etc?
  • Have you had much help along the way with the revamp? If so, who from? And what sort of help - practical or ideas-based?!
  • How did you find your shopping experience at B&Q? Were the staff helpful? Did you find anything in store you maybe didn't expect to beforehand?
  • Did you use any of the help and advice that B&Q offer? This includes their videos on YouTube, leaflets and classes in store etc. If so, how useful was that help and advice?
  • If B&Q could do anything more to help you next time you visit, what would it be?
  • Have you had any feedback on what you've done with the room from family/friends? Has the transformation had a big impact on you and/or your family?

If you're not an official tester but would like to be in with a chance of winning a £200 B&Q giftcard, please post on this thread to tell us about your own room revamp successes (or failures!) - we'd love to hear from all MNers who have a room makeover story to share!

Thanks very much
MNHQ

I'm not a tester, but I'm impressed with how quickly some of the testers are making progress!

I despise decorating. I know what I want/like etc but can never find it.

Probably the worst idea I had was when I wanted a 'gothic courtyard bedroom'.

With hindsight, even the thought should have put me off but it didn't... there was a lot of black wrought ironwork beds/furniture, and drapey burgundy velvet sheets and drapes.... and to finish it off, some lino that looked sort of like flagstones. (If you had drunk a lot of gin perhaps....)

Whole thing was an abomination. DP was not impressed with my decorating skills and so we are now sticking to neutral so that I can't get carried away!

gazzalw · 31/05/2013 13:57

Nevergoogle - I share the pain. We have still not solved the crackled paint issue - so the entire wall painting (bar the feature wall) still needs to be done. It has basically delayed us by about four days I would reckon....

DW is now undercoating the woodwork having become totally demoralised by the emulsioning issue... but that's not quick either....

Meanwhile the children are TV'd and computered out this half-term. It wasn't quite what any of them had envisaged.

And, we've still got to go back to B&Q for more paint and to get the accessories....I am going to flag up here that I am not entirely sure we will meet the deadline....

The last time we did major decorating we had a B&Q just down the road - literally a 10 minute walk away, so not having a car didn't really adversely impact on us. This time around it has been quite apparent that 3 hour round trips to the closest one aren't entirely easy to fit into busy family life...

Babieseverywhere · 31/05/2013 16:53

Really hope you don't have any further issues with the paint etc.

We are finding DIYing to a deadline over an half term difficult too. Luckily we are decorating the kids room, so they do get a postive element too. But they are bored of playing in the house and garden.

New skirting board up and primed with undercoat. Cupboard thingy coveted in plywood also primed and with l shaped edger on the corner edge.

All gloss work sanded and cleaned. Applied one coat of gloss on all wood. Need to wait 6 hours or tomorrow for second coat.

Just debating about starting the wall painting after tea or quit for the day and restart tomorrow.

SweetestThing · 31/05/2013 17:38

I hope everyone manages to sort out their niggles and problems. I must admit, I was starting to despair of ever getting the fireplace stripped at one point, so I share your pain!

I abandoned the idea of stripping the entire floor and varnishing it so am cheating and only doing the bit that will be visible ....I suspect we will end up recarpetting but this will be a reasonable temporary measure. First coat of varnish applied. I will need to do a second coat, possibly a third. Still to put up the new curtain pole and hang the pictures, replace the furniture in the room, fix the new lampshade etc. I still have two videos to make so will do one tomorrow and the final one on Monday, when (hopefully!) it will be as complete as it can be!

Well done, everyone. Some excellent work over the half-term.

nevergoogle · 31/05/2013 20:53

I've been taking up the curtains in between crazy golf with the kids on torquay seafront today. Curtain rods and curtains all back up again now that the painting is finished. The end is in sight?

gazzalw · 31/05/2013 21:38

DW has done a good job with the undercoating and is really regretting having spent so long trying to solve the yet unsolved crackled paint dilemma...

She has been doing long days though and only finished at 8.00 pm..... Yawn.....

Thanks for the encouragement everyone and well done to everyone too - amazing what can be achieved. SweetestThing your fireplace is very special and well done for keeping at the stripping of it for three days!

  • Why is your unloved room unloved? What do you want to change about it? What has stopped you until now?

I'm doing the living room. I think its unloved because all I ever seem to do is tidy it, having 4 children means its constantly full of toys and and don't get chance to sit and relax or watch anything I want to watch on the tv, its all Cbeebies, that's when ds3 stops pressing buttons, turning it on and off or trying to scale the tv stand for 5 minutes! So there never seems any point doing anything nice to it. Its magnolia at the moment and very dull. Lack of money hasn't helped either. I want somewhere nice to sit and drink a cup of tea in when the children are all in bed, more storage and I want to put the tv on the wall where ds3 can't get at it. And I want a feature wall even though most on Mn think they are dated

  • Where did you get your inspiration for doing up the room from? What sort of style are you going for etc?

I've been looking at people's houses on fb Blush and stole some of their ideas, I'm going for a bold feature wall, its bright blue with big cream flowers on, and painting the walls a silver/grey colour to match some of the patterns on the wall paper, I'm getting some cushions in grey shades and some blue accessories.

  • Have you had much help along the way with the revamp? If so, who from? And what sort of help - practical or ideas-based?!

My eldest two boys have been helping me, we have painted the ceiling, done all the gloss work and painted the walls so far, we did hang the wallpaper but it sort of fell off again so I need to redo it, plus I think it was wonky! Ds3 has helped by spilling a tin of emulsion on the floor, and pulling some wallpaper off Sad it would be alot easier if he wasn't helping to be honest but by the time he's in bed, ds4 (17 weeks) wants to cluster feed and then I'm knackard and just want to sleep.

  • How did you find your shopping experience at B&Q? Were the staff helpful? Did you find anything in store you maybe didn't expect to beforehand?

The staff at b&q were quite helpful the first time we went, it amazes me how I can ask them for a random item and they know straight away which aisle I need! Staff were friendly and didn't seem to mind helping. We had to take the paint pod back as the useless thing kept refusing to work, the store we bought it from we're spectacularly unhelpful to be honest, I couldn't get to speak to anyone about it, the switchboard kept asking me to phone the paint pod people direct (which I had done already!) and didn't listen when I asked them of I could exchange it in store, just kept fobbing me off - one of them said he would check and come back to me, which was days ago but no one from that store has for back to me yet. So I called a different store, who said it was no problem and changed it for me with no hassle. I had to call before hand as I don't drive, and didn't fancy taking the double pushchair, carrying the paint pod and catching several buses from store to store in the rain only to find I couldn't change it.

  • Did you use any of the help and advice that B&Q offer? This includes their videos on YouTube, leaflets and classes in store etc. If so, how useful was that help and advice?
  • If B&Q could do anything more to help you next time you visit, what would it be?

I've been watching some YouTube videos but my class isn't until the end of the month. We waited in b&q for half an hour at customer services for the manager who was going to swap the paint pod, until my baby was really screaming and I was totally fed up. Then they decided to tell me she was in a meeting.... After all that it was changed by a regular staff member after they decided they didn't need the manager after all. There is always a lot of waiting at b&q and things move so slowly.

  • Have you had any feedback on what you've done with the room from family/friends? Has the transformation had a big impact on you and/or your family?

We haven't finished yet, I've got to put the tv up and fix the trunking up, no one has seen the stuff we had already done yet, but I think they will like it.

FourLittleDudes · 01/06/2013 09:39

Wallpapering

FourLittleDudes · 01/06/2013 09:40

My wall paper fell off :-(

FourLittleDudes · 01/06/2013 09:44

Not sure you can make out the new colour of the walls on this photo it it matches the leaves on the wallpaper.

ChocolateMama · 01/06/2013 09:52

Been super busy, but tomorrow is earmarked to finish the boys room to meet our Monday deadline. Will post all before and after pics together, so you can all hopefully ooohhh and ahhhh at the results!!!

gazzalw · 01/06/2013 10:08

Feeling a lot more positive today because I'm off for the weekend and can help.....Off to B&Q shortly with DS.

I'm taking my IPad into B&Q to show the guys on the information desk for their hopefully expert advice on the eco-paint blistering dilemma. Am hoping that after Helen @ MNHQ has flagged it up that someone might actually try it out as an experiment to see if the 'epic fail' (to use DS's vernacular!) is us or some type of reaction twixt paint, paper and/or wallpaper paste.

The undercoated woodwork looks good so I'm off to get some satinwood - trying that instead of gloss as the latter is a bit 'yesterday'.

FourLittleDudes · 01/06/2013 10:37

Oi don't be saying gloss is 'yesterday' I've just given my woodwork its 4th coat Grin Wink

Babieseverywhere · 01/06/2013 12:08

We finally have colour on the wall. Done half of it and having a break for lunch. About to restart on the rest and final coat of gloss.

Light fixture is up, with DH muttering about the four wires in the ceiling and internal bits of the light but it is up and working.

Right off to do more painting :)

IceNoSlice · 01/06/2013 14:19

Everyone is having a very busy weekend!

The end is in sight! The carpet fitters are due any minute! When they finish, we're off to B&Q again this afternoon. We fitted the light this morning, but it's broken Sad

The light is a dangly one with 9 bulbs each with it's own glass bowl type shade. We fitted the square bit that goes on the ceiling, all fine, then went to put the shades on and one is smashed in the packaging. So we're taking that bit back to B&Q. Don't want to have to take the ceiling bit off to return the whole thing! So this will give me a chance to report back as to how they deal with a faulty product. Watch this space!

nevergoogle · 01/06/2013 14:33

laughing at the gloss is yesterday, really not helpful at this stage!
fwiw our woodwork is done in vinyl matt.
another cat to throw amongst the pigeons!

Geordieminx · 01/06/2013 14:50

Afternoon folks.

Today after 3 trips back up B&Q I am mostly glossing. I hate it more than hate itself but oh it looks so fresh and clean... Thankfully I am getting a new carpet in the next week or two as I am the worlds messiest painter.

Porch is done and looking lovely and cosy.

Looking doubtful that I am gonna be finished for Monday.. Esp given I need to go to London tomorrow for a week but we'll keep plodding on.

Oh and feedback to B&Q... You really need more staff on if a weekend. Über busy and what appeared to be 3 staff and one check out at Coatbridge.

Babieseverywhere · 01/06/2013 16:03

We have finished painting the kids room and second coat of white gloss, which I love as it makes the woodwork look so much better. I loved the Dulux mixed to order endurance paint. It was lovely and thick and covered beautifully on our bad walls.

Just have blinds, shelves, pictures to put up...which can't be done until everything dries i.e. Tomorrow, then we take more photos and upload them all to this thread.

So we are off out shortly with the kids to sit in our friends house/garden, and drink a bottle of wine or two to literally wait for paint to dry !

Hope everything is going well for everyone else. :)

IceNoSlice · 01/06/2013 18:01

Ok, just been to B&Q and tried to use the last of the money on our card (about £30). It didn't work because it was really scratched! I have used it 3 times in total in 2 stores, so one of the card readers must have scratched it. On all 3 of the times we used the card the till operator had to manually key in the number. This time the card was so scratched (after she tried to scan it a few times) that you couldn't even read the number!!

Anyone else had this problem?

HelenMNHQ please help- is there someone at B&Q head office who can sort this out for me?

Gift card problems aside, I'm really happy - we bought curtains and cushions for the room and will be moving in tonight when DS is in bed. Will post some after pictures then Smile

nevergoogle · 01/06/2013 18:20

Did they not accept the card? Shock

IceNoSlice · 01/06/2013 19:32

No Sad they couldn't get the machine to read it or see the number to key it in

JazzAnnNonMouse · 01/06/2013 19:38

You lot have inspired me! I'm cracking on with our house Grin
Painted the stairs and hall today. It's gone from grubby magnolia with biscuit shite shiney woodwork and clashing manky carpet to sophisticated grey walls and white (only primed so far) wood work. Carpet has been ripped out and we're in the process of cleaning the underlay off the stairs and sanding/priming ready to be painted - have decided to have a runner in various Grey/white stripes shades.

It's looking messy but I can see how it's going to look Grin
