Hello

This is the feedback thread for the 20 testers who have received a new YouView TV box and who are currently trying it out in their homes.

YouView say "YouView is a subscription-free television service which seamlessly combines live and catch-up television. The service offers over 70 free to air channels and radio stations via a TV aerial and also connects to any broadband service to bring catch-up and on demand programmes directly to your TV. The TV service, which launched in July 2012, is backed by BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva"

The YouView box allows you to record, pause and rewind TV, as well as featuring BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5.

Testers: we'll be asking you to add feedback twice - we'd like your first impressions now and in a couple of weeks we will add some more questions.

So, in terms of your first impressions. please....
~ give your overall impression when it arrived
~ describe the set up: did you set up your YouView box yourself? If not, who did? How easy did you / your DH/DP etc find it to set up your YouView box?
~ tell us which TV is it on/ in which room
~ share what you/ your family think the first couple of times you used it - what was the best feature and what, if anything, have you struggled with

If you're not a tester, YouView would love to hear from you - for a chance to win a £100 John Lewis voucher please share on this thread the programme(s) you'd love to pause, record or watch again - this could be a programme that's on now, or something special from the last few years or even something from your childhood - the programme which is really special to you and/or your family. Maybe you were on TV as a child and would like to see it again or you want to relive an Olympic moment or even maybe you're a massive Corrie fan and want to never miss an episode! Please share this on the thread and you'll be entered into the prize draw.

thanks
MNHQ

Please note: The final questions have now been added to the thread on Tues 2 April at 11:30

I would love to be able to paused and rewind Modern Family - we all watch it together and I often miss a joke because DS is laughing so loudly at the last one!

Not a tester but I would want to watch all of the old episodes of Juliet Bravo. That was our Saturday night treat when we were kids - we'd had our weekly bath and hair wash and we were allowed downstairs in our dressing gowns to watch it - hot chocolate and a biscuit in front of the gas fire - fond memories Grin.

Dh and I have started watching Teachers from the beginning. I'd forgotten how good it was! So nice being able to watch on demand stuff on the TV instead of online. We've had iplayer freeze twice so far, both times in the evening when I assume there is higher demand on broadband but 4od has never frozen. Not tried the other players yet.

True Blood is definitely something I would like to watch again right from the first series, it would be a great escape from all the doom and gloom at the moment.

I would quite happily curl up and watch Call The Midwife every Sunday for the rest of my life.Snuggled up on the settee,I am a child again in the late 1950's completely absorbed in a world where dedicated teams of people battled tiredlessly against poverty, ignorance, dirt and disease to care for those in need. The programme reminds us of what life was like before we had the NHS and welfare benefits system we have today ,and educates those who take it for granted and do not foresee the consequences of losing all those reforms, so hard won by past generations. The young midwives are great role models,so hardworking ,conscientious with a great love for and pride in their work. They also support one another.
The BBC should be commended for interpreting these stories so beautifully, capturing the rhythm and atmosphere of the time.
Thank you to the team.

I'd love to rewatch a news bulletin from about 15 years ago which featured my aunt and uncle. They have both since passed away and I think it would be nice to see them again Smile

halcyondays' other half here - tech toys don't get past me without a fight. :)

~ give your overall impression when it arrived

Nice piece of kit. Fairly sturdily built. Shiny.

~ describe the set up: did you set up your YouView box yourself? If not, who did? How easy did you / your DH/DP etc find it to set up your YouView box?

Very easy to set up - plug in, follow the prompts, and let it do its thing. Although it's not the quickest box I've ever used in that department, it is very straightforward. We had the necessary network connections already in place under the TV (that's were our broadband comes in) or that might have been a bit fiddly.

~ tell us which TV is it on/ in which room

Main TV in the living room. We're giving it a run as a replacement for the Sky+ HD box, which it's been doing fairly well so far...

~ share what you/ your family think the first couple of times you used it - what was the best feature and what, if anything, have you struggled with

Live search & inclusion of the 'catch up' services in that - makes it dead easy to find what you're looking for. Had a few problems with 'unable to obtain license' errors on catch-up, but they usually pass if you retry; the kids have been using the Milkshake player a lot, which looks pretty but is really slow to use, thanks to the way it animates everything. Have seen Munchkin Snr get a bit annoyed with that on occasion - although overall they've been enjoying using it. And both girls (6 & 4) figured out how to use it very quickly - as did halcyondays, who never could get the hang of using the catch-up players on the PS3.

In general, though, first impressions from all of us are really good. Really easy to use box with some neat features. Having PVR & catch-up in one box is really handy - I know Sky have added catch-up to Sky+ HD now, but it's not integrated as well as YouView have done it, and scrollback is a good unique feature. For now, anyway. :)

Now if they could just add Netflix to the streaming options, we'd be all set...

Oh I watched Twin Peaks religiously but can't remember the last few episodes - didn't it just get increasingly bizarre and even more far-fetched than previously?

Oh and I would love to see the conclusion of Heroes - all these series suddenly seem to tail off normal TV and one is left without satisfactory closure!

The first Life on Mars, pretty much anything with Mirada Hart in it (no I am not her Mum, but she does crack me up), Dinner Ladies (ditto Victoria Wood).

Could it have a "Banned - this programme can not be played on this" button ... I would put Top Gear on that list. Grin

Programme to pause, rewind or watch again...

Crimewatch is on series repeat because I always forget when it's on. But for pausing and rewinding, we're big fans of nature programmes on BBC HD, DH is always rewinding them to see the action again or marvel at the pixel quality Blush

Anyone else still struggling a bit with the remote? Apart from the clicking I'm finding it counter intuitive that with the mini guide thing (where you just get teh whats on now and next on the bottom of the screen) that to scroll UP through the channels you have to use the DOWN arrow. It gets me every single bloody time, even if I try to stop and think about it I still end up going the wrong way!

I'd watch 'Take the High Road' - a Scottish soap which was discontinued quite a few years ago. Beautiful scenery, set around Loch Lomond and interesting plotlines. Some great actors - anyone remember Davey Sneddon; the archetypal 'real man!' You can watch it on YouTube, and I do...Smile

I'm not a tester, but I've been using You View for about 4 months. Some feedback:

Channel 5 children's programmes don't always record the whole programme (when setting up in advance to record). Channel 5 must be broadcasting the wrong start time for their programmes, this leads to a curtailed programme (and a very disappointed 3 year old who doesn't understand why Fireman Sam has suddenly ended).

I used to use Lovefilm (the postal DVD service), and I would pay to use Lovefilm on demand, but this service isn't on offer - when is it going to come online?

I would like the option of deleting a whole group of programmes, not having to delete individual programmes (e.g. all of the Fireman Sam episodes, not deleting each one individually).
